Chapter 170: A Childish Tantrum
Chapter 170: A Childish Tantrum
"Don’t change anything for my sake. Do what you usually do," Viola added.
"Yes, mother," Viviana smiled and left the room.
Once she was in the kitchen, she asked someone to check on Katerina. She was told that Katerina locked herself in the bathroom for some time, but she came out. She has obviously cried.
Katerina came to the kitchen. Viviana wanted to say words of comfort to Katerina but she didn’t think Katerina would accept her good intent. So, she skipped it.
"What does she like?" Viviana asked Katerina.
Katerina knew that Viola is here to cause trouble. No matter what they do, Viola will find faults in it.
"I am not privy to Signora Kastello’s preferences," Katerina gave a non-answer.
Viviana didn’t want to force her. She asked the chef to cook the usual dishes he prepares for everyone and she decided to cook a broth as she usually does. That way, if Viola doesn’t like her cooking, she will have the food she’s used to.
Katerina didn’t say it out loud, but she looked content that Viviana made that decision. Viviana and the chef started cooking with Mary and Martha assisting them. Viviana asked Martha to make sure Viola doesn’t run out of wine.
Viviana too went to see if Viola was feeling comfortable.
As Viviana almost turned off the heat of the stew, Viola entered the kitchen.
"Air conditioner in the kitchen?" Viola asked as that was the first thing she noticed.
"Capo didn’t want Signora to sweat when she’s working in the kitchen," Mary said naturally as she’s someone who doesn’t filter her thoughts much.
Viviana noticed a flicker of anger on Viola’s face. But then she controlled her expression and looked around.
"What’s this?" Viola walked to the pot of seafood stew. Opening the lid, she squinted her face. "What atrocity is this? Is the Kastello family that impoverished to eat the stew of fishermen?" she scoffed.
No one said a word. Everyone knew it was Leander’s favorite stew and Viviana liked to cook it for him. Viola is trying to make an issue with a non-issue. They all kept their silence hoping Viola would move on.
But she didn’t.
"Throw it out," Viola shouted. "I don’t even like the smell of this countryside atrocity!"
Viviana stepped forward. Viola is technically her mother-in-law. Historically, mothers-in-law find fault with their daughters-in-law. It’s not something new. So Viola’s behavior is not weird.
But Viviana was put off by Viola’s childish behavior.
She does not like food going to waste and the stew is Leander’s favorite. She is not going to throw it out. This is her kitchen. She should have the final authority on what happens in here.
Even still, Viviana tried to be patient. She did not want Leander’s mother to feel disrespected in his home.
"Mother, I’ll keep the stew aside. The duck roast is in the oven for you. Lean~"
"Are you talking back to me?" Viola turned at Viviana. "I am patient with you. Ever since I got here, every one of you is disrespecting me. Preparing this for what?" Viola pointed at the pot of stew. "To tell me that I am a beggar? That I lack food and came here to beg? At my son’s house?"
Viviana didn’t want to speak, but seeing that Mary was trying to say something, Viviana stepped forward. Whatever Mary says, Viola will consider that as an insult.
It’s better if she falls in the trap than Mary. Mary might get seriously hurt. Viviana didn’t want that. Mary is a sweet girl.
"No, mother. We are preparing another dish for~"
"Did I ask you to speak? You’re one insolent, uneducated..." Viola pressed her lips as if she was holding back from cussing out Viviana.
Viviana wetted her lips. She’s been called worse and it didn’t bother her. All she wanted was to pacify this situation. "I’ll keep it aside," she walked to the stove.
"Keeping it?" Viola scoffed. "I’m not letting you keep it."
Viola picked the pot of stew with the lid on and threw it at the sink not even minding Viviana who was walking to the counter. The pot was steaming hot and Viviana didn’t have enough time to get away from the way.
She was walking into the path of the boiling hot stew.
"Signora!" Martha screamed and pulled Viviana back by grabbing her dress.
Although Martha was successful in getting her from harm’s way, Viviana lost her balance tripping on the rug and ended up falling on her butt. Viola’s throw was not great and the pot ended up crashing on the floor.
Mary fell on top of Viviana blocking her from the splatters of the hot stew that splattered everywhere in the kitchen. When the loud clanking of the pot settled, Viviana peeked out from the embrace of Mary to assess the situation. Thanks to the rug that was in the middle that was rolled when Viviana tripped on it, the splatters didn’t reach Mary or on anyone. Only the floor and the cabinets got messy.
The pot was still upright with the lid toppled to the side. She was so mad with Viola for throwing such a dangerous and childish tantrum in the kitchen but seeing the upright pot, Viviana wanted to laugh.
Her stew still survived!
Viola saw the ruin around her. Like a child who doesn’t want to take responsibility for her act, she stomped out of the kitchen. "Damn, my shoes!" she complained as if she was not responsible for the drop of stew on her shoe.
But she stopped as she reached the door.
Martha heled Mary up and Viviana looked at the door to see what froze Viola. Right beside the chef who went on a bathroom break, there he was...
Leander Kastello, in flesh. She was happy to see him. She was worried for him but he didn’t look like he was hurt.
But then, Viviana’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t know what kind of drama Viola is going to pull. She hoped that Viola doesn’t blame any of the maids for what happened there.
She knew even though Leander has a way to know the truth of what happened here, he will avoid it and side with his mother. That guy would put his family over everything else. That’s all he knows.
So, he will blame the servants if his mother blames them. And no one can guess what kind of punishments they’ll get to cover up his mother’s childish tantrum.
"My hands slipped. I am sorry," Viviana got up grabbing Martha’s hands. "I know a lot could have gone wrong, but thank goodness it didn’t. I’ll be careful from now on. And.... I’ll clean it up and make it all sparkly."
Leander looked at her pressing his lips. Viviana gulped. Mary and Martha subconsciously stood behind Viviana.
Leander looked at his mother. He looked deeply at her for over a minute. Viola stared back at Leander. She tried to speak, but looking at Leander’s sharp eyes of a predator, she couldn’t get her voice out.
Leander moved from the door and Viola rushed out of the kitchen. Leander turned and jerked his head commanding something to someone; it probably was Steve behind him. Viviana gulped and clutched her skirt. Now is the time to face the music.
"Go get the cleaning supplies," Leander looked at Mary and Martha. Both of them nodded and rushed out.
Viviana was stunned. "It’s under the sink..." she pointed at the cabinet under the sink. Mary and Marth turned and glanced at her, but then rushed out with an apologetic glance.
Having left alone with the lion, Viviana went blank. She didn’t know what to do. But then she remembered that none of it is actually her fault It was his mother’s fault.
But she didn’t want to make this a big issue.
"I’m sorry. I am a bit nervous today and maybe that was why I was clumsy...." She scratched the back of her head and took a step backward as Leander entered the kitchen.
The door was still open and that only made Viviana’s heart jump in fright. She didn’t want to get shouted at in front of others.
"Don’t ruin your shoes," she tried to stop him. But he did not stop.
He walked to her.
"Are you hurt anywhere?" he asked.
"Nope, nope," she shook her head and walked backward until she couldn’t move back anymore.
He did not stop even though he could see that she was scared. He grabbed her hand and twisted it. Viviana gritted her teeth expecting pain, but there was no pain. He only twisted it a little to have a look at her elbow.
There was a little scrape.
"It’s nothing," she grinned widely. She grinned so widely that the corners of her lips twitched.
He sighed. That same sigh he’s been sighing lately as if he was exasperated.
"Why?" he asked. "Why?"
"Huh?" Viviana blinked.
What does he mean? What is he asking?
