Chapter 172: Boundary
Chapter 172: Boundary
"Sit," Leander said pulling a chair for Viviana.
Viviana had no intention of being a part of whatever Leander was planning and she was not appreciative of him for involving her. But what can she do?
"I’ll get the bread for you," she smiled and rushed to the kitchen.
Leander followed her with his eyes until she disappeared into the kitchen while his fingers casually tapped on the table. When he lost sight of her, he turned and smiled at his mother.
"Eat, mom. I like her cooking," Leander served the stew to Viola. "It reminds me of the time long ago," he smiled. Leaning back on his chair he started tapping his fingers on the table again.
For Viola, the tapping of his fingers sounded like the hooves of the white horse carrying the grim reaper. The seemingly innocent smile of Leander frightened her so much that her blood pressure shot to the roof.
It was odd. She’s heard of his stare of death, but she never believed it to be this terrorizing. He usually looks at her like a beggar. His looks would scream "love me" and that made her skin crawl whenever she was with him.
She thought he would welcome her with a wide grin and act like the beggar he is. She thought that he would welcome her and submit to her thinking that she was here to wish him on his birthday.
But...She regretted ever visiting here.
Leander cleared his throat and controlled himself seeing his mother in a panic. He was deathly mad at his mother for trying to hurt his wife.
Why would she do it?
And then the ugly head of jealousy that he keeps locking up, reared its head again.
Would she have done the same to Evander’s wife?
His wife thinks that his mother acts this way because of her insecurity and to show her dominance, like any other mother-in-law. But he didn’t think it was that simple.
His mother was never a mother to him. Why did she suddenly decide to act like a mother-in-law to his wife?
Had Evander succeeded in signing the book that day, that mouse would have become Evander’s wife. Then, she’d be fawned over by this same mother-in-law as if she was an angel from heaven.
Leander kept on tapping the table to control the tremble in his hands.
Why? Why has he been treated this way by his mother? He thought it would change one day. They are family. Her blood flows inside him. Whatever the reason she is avoiding him, he thought that one day, her ties with him through her blood would change that.
He’s alive because of her blood! How much more precious can their relationship be?
And yet, why is he treated like this...?
It would have been fine if her animosity stopped with him. He’s her son, and she has every right to treat him the way she pleases. He would take anything she throws at him. She is his mother.
But he cannot allow her to hurt his wife. She is an entirely different person even though she is his wife. She’s a little mouse who would just take everything for one reason or another. And she will hide it from him so that he won’t get hurt.
She’s stupid!
And that’s precisely why he cannot allow any hurt to befall her. He will protect her even from his mother.
He’s not that forgiving. He still remembered how she was shaking on his bed when she was stripped naked. He was there... in the bathroom and his wife was humiliated in that house, in his room, just when he was a few meters away.
He told everyone in that house that day that no one can disrespect his wife. Today, his mother came to his house and complains of disrespect when she almost scorched his wife.
In his house! In their house!
Even in this house, in the kitchen where his wife is the happiest, his little mouse was attacked.
And that stupid thinks it was nothing. It surely is not. It is unforgivable. This house is where she should feel safe. If she does not, what is the purpose of him as the man of the house? It’s insulting.
He needs to set boundaries.
Leander looked at Viola, still shaking. She was typing something on her phone. When he noticed it, she hid her phone.
Leander had a feeling that Evander would be here any time soon. He could see Viviana approaching through his peripheral vision.
"Eat," he picked up and offered her the spoon. "We are family, mom. We should all dine and be happy together. Remember the times we would dine with dad? I remember this particular time dad brought me to a seafood restaurant. He loved seafood very much, didn’t he? Whenever she cooks seafood, I get reminded of dad."
Viola gulped and took a sip of the stew.
"Great! I would have felt disrespected if you didn’t eat my wife’s cooking." Leander tapped the table with his hand.
Viola pressed her lips and closed her eyes out of fright.
Viviana placed the other dishes on the table. Mary and Martha were busy cleaning the kitchen and the chef was busy plating the dishes he cooked.
Taking her seat beside Leander, Viviana looked at Viola forcing herself to eat the stew. She doesn’t have to do that. But she had a feeling that she does not have a choice. She’s seen mothers force their fuzzy toddlers to eat, but she has never seen a grown man forcing his mother to eat.
She felt a bit bad for Viola. But only a little. She went overboard by trying to throw away the stew. She deserves this! Does she realize how many people in this world are starving? Heh!
Viola took a side glance at Viviana. Controlling her urge to scream, she swallowed. "It’s good," she nodded.
She wanted to throw every plate to the floor and break it. She desperately felt the need to hear stuff breaking around her. She was mad.
He mentioned his dad!
Lucious did love seafood. He wasn’t always fond of seafood as she learned later. He only got used to seafood because his first wife loved seafood.
Leander knows that is the reason she hates seafood because she gets reminded that she was never Lucious’ first choice. She was the replacement forced on him by his family in "her" absence.
She really wanted to scream out loud.
Evander... come soon!
