Chapter 169: Checking Out

But when the door opened and when Viviana saw the person entering the house, her smile froze. She didn’t know what to do.

Martha who was standing behind her nudged her with her shoulders as she bowed. "Welcome, Signora Kastello."

Mary who was stunned as Viviana was, bowed her head too.

Viviana gathered herself from her shock. She was not expecting Leander’s mother to visit here. Judging by the reactions of everyone, she figured that everyone was surprised too.

Katerina came running from the laundry room.

"Welcome~"

"Who are you all to welcome ME to MY son’s house?" Viola shouted. "I heard that my son lets his servants sit on his head and I can see it! You people seriously need a beating just like they would do in those days." Viola shouted not even looking at Viviana.

Viviana pressed her lips and stood with her hands clasped together as if she was standing in front of the principal after getting caught for misconduct. That was her first reaction. She’s used to feeling fear whenever someone raises their voice.

"I apologize, Signora Kastello," Katerina stepped forward. "I should be blamed. I’ve been slacking from teaching them properly."

Viola walked to Katerina. Viviana looked at her with her eyes wide, anxious about what might happen.

*Slap*

Viola slapped Katerina so hard in the cheek that Katerina almost fell over. Viviana’s heart skipped a beat. The fear in her heart vanished the moment she saw tears on Katerina’s face.

"You are right about that, Katerina!" Viola shouted and raised her hand to hit Katerina again.

"Come, take a seat, mother," Viviana stepped to the front and held Viola’s hand.

Everyone looked at Viviana with terror apparent in their eyes. Katerina fell to her knees.

Only then Viviana realized that she was missing her smile. It would seem like she does not approve of Viola’s treatment of the servants of Orchid Gardens.

Although that was her true feeling, she cannot show it to Leander’s mother.

She had no respect for Leander’s mother. But Viola is Leander’s mother. And he probably loves her more than he loves his brother, almost the same as his love for his grandfather.

He would be hurt if he learns that his mother was disrespected in his house.

She smiled ear to ear. "I am so happy you came for a visit, mother," she hooked her arms around her arms and led her to the living room. By how Viola was looking around, she had a feeling that Viola never visited Leander’s house before.

Why did she come here for her first visit when he is not here? Viviana wondered. She was surprised a bit that Viola was not showing any attitude to her and following her like a good little puppy though.

She didn’t know that Viola knew how important she is to him. He killed a trusted aide of his grandfather just because he went a little far with her.

Viola was not going to risk it with Leander when it comes to her.

"The sun’s down and why is everyone standing around? Aren’t you starting dinner?" Viola shouted.

Viviana turned and gestured all the servants to leave. She cannot let Leander’s mother abuse his servants in front of her eyes.

"I was about to start dinner, mother. I’ll bring some refreshments for you. I’m sorry I’m making you wait for dinner," she scratched the back of her head.

"That’s..." Viola cleared her throat. "It’s fine. Go, bring me wine and cheese while I wait for dinner."

"Yes. Your son has an unopened bottle of some old wine that is expensive. I’ll bring it out for you," Viviana smiled ear to ear and turned to walk to the kitchen.

"What an uneducated, mannerless, country bumpkin..." Viola mumbled for Viviana to hear.

But Viviana didn’t mind. She should be putting some effort to manage to be Leander’s wife. She would do that if she had to prove herself as his partner. But she’s not going to live for long. Why is waste of time learning the names of wines?

Viola glared at Viviana. She did not like the news she was hearing from the Orchid gardens, so she came here. He wouldn’t have believed it if she didn’t see the disgust on his face when he saw her food. But he was getting fat these days. She was told that his wife cooks for him.

What’s that special about her cooking?

She wanted to see for herself.

"Hey," she called the servant who tried to dash under the stairs.

"Signora..." Maya walked to Viola.

"Is it true that woman does the cooking?" Viola asked. She could not believe that. What self-respecting woman would spend her time cooking in the kitchen?

"Most of the time, yes, Signora," Maya replied politely.

"And another thing," Viola waved her hand for Maya to come closer to her.

Maya took a couple of small steps forward and leaned closer.

"Do they share a bed every day? Any fights?" Viola asked.

Maya gulped and wetted her lips. She knew these were intrusive questions, and she didn’t know if Leander would want her to answer those questions.

"Not that I have to explain it to a servant," Viola pressed her lips in a conceited way. "I’m asking because I want to know how long I should wait for my grandson," she leaned forward.

She really wanted to know.

Maya smiled politely, hiding her awkwardness. It is natural for a mother to know these things, but she didn’t think that Viola was curious for good reasons.

"Has Maya angered you, mother?"

Maya turned to see Viviana standing there with a tray. Viviana gestured for Maya to leave and without any hesitation, Maya ran away.

Viola gritted her teeth. What she was told is nothing compared to what she is seeing. Even the servant respects that orphan more than her. How could this be allowed?

"Don’t be offended, mother. She cares for Leander’s cats and it’s time to feed them," Viviana smiled and placed the tray on the table.

Viola pressed her lips. Viviana could see the stress on Viola’s wrinkled neck. "What’s this?" Viola screamed. "This wine and cheese don’t go together! Is it that hard to figure out?"

Viviana apologized, although she was sure this is the best pairing. Katerina attested that this is the combination Viola likes it. She could see that Viola is trying to cause trouble.

Viviana didn’t want to fall for it. Already, Leander left home stressed. She didn’t want him to return to home to listen to complaints from his mother.

She wanted him to have peace.

"I’ll bring you something else, mother," she smiled and tried to pick up the tray.

"No, leave it," Viola waved her hand.

Viviana stood by the side.

"You’re still not cooking? I heard you’re a great cook and came to have a feast," Viola smiled widely although she struggled to fake that smile.

Viviana smiled. "Then, please, excuse me."
