Chapter 119: A Taste of Her Cooking
Leander pushed his plate away and Viviana gulped. She didn’t know what angered him.
"I..." she started to speak, but then she gulped as his eyes ended up on her. He looked scary.
"I like the food here. The chef’s a great chef. The food tastes nothing less than a Micheline star restaurant. I know because I had the chance to eat at one of those restaurants... one that had three stars..." she was so nervous she rubbed her thighs. "This guy I was introduced to by a friend on a blind date... he brought me...for a date..." she cleared her throat as his eyes turned menacing.
She was trying not to throw the chef in the kitchen under the bus, but now she had angered him more for some reason.
"Anyway," her voice turned high and she forced a smile. "I love restaurant foods. And I love fancy restaurant food more. But today I felt like eating something simple, like a home-cooked meal..." she shrugged. "I remembered my mother’s cooking and..." she let out a breath of relief as his eyes turned calm.
So, talking about my mother is not bad, but anything else is bad...Got it!
"And you cooked for yourself?" he asked picking up the steak knife.
Okay, maybe he didn’t calm down? Oh, Melanie... You angered him by pushing him away on the bed earlier and now, you have angered him more. Is he going to carve my eyes out? That will hurt, right?
"I did..." her voice went low as a whisper.
"Did you cook the steak?" he asked pointing at his plate.
Viviana shook her head immediately. "I didn’t! I don’t know your taste and I knew you’d come home hungry. I dare not mess up your food."
Leander stared at her. He still didn’t look impressed. She could only swear at herself. Who asked her to enter the kitchen without his permission? Now he is mad. He might be thinking that she is slighting his expensive food.
All she wanted was to have a bowl of food she used to like back in Abenney. Leona would bring her brodetto whenever her mother makes it and she loved it. Leona would bring her lots of food during lunch. Her mother too cooked brodetto just the way the households in Abenney would cook and she learned it from her mother.
Should she get into trouble with Leander for a bowl of food? Why is fate so unfair to her?
"I know you’re used to eating restaurant-style food, but I don’t know how to cook restaurant-style. I’m a novice cook and I only know a few recipes. I didn’t want to ruin your appetite and..." she stopped as she didn’t know why he stood up.
She subconsciously covered her head. What if he grabs her hair again? There was silence and she clenched her jaws to brace for the pain.
*Drrrr*
She felt no pain but heard her bowl getting dragged on the table. She opened her eyes slightly to take a peek.
Her bowl of nostalgia was leaving her.
She removed her hands from her head and watched him. He pushed the plate of steak to her. "What kind of selfish prick cooks for one?" he grumbled.
Viviana pressed her lips. She’s been cooking for herself for almost four years. Why is that selfish?
"I don’t like wasting food..." she said. She wouldn’t have minded cooking for everyone but her cooking won’t be to everyone’s taste. And food will get wasted. She despised wasting food.
Leander sighed. It was a very deep sigh as if he was regretting his entire existence. Viviana with a pout stared at her bowl of brodetto. Those beautiful shrimp... that tangy tomato broth... Aww...
Just as she watched, Leander took a taste of the broth. She thought he would spit it out in his napkin like Chef Gordon Ramsey would and give some dry remark that would make her hang her head in shame.
But he said nothing. No sound came from him except for the sound of slurping. He buried his face in the bowl and finished the entire bowl within some minutes.
He likes it!
Viviana’s lips curved into a smile. The disappointment she felt after losing the food she toiled to prepare, vanished in thin air seeing how much Leander enjoyed the food. Had she known that he’d enjoy this simple dish this much, she’d have prepared more.
She got hungry watching him eat, and she got the plate of steak and started eating.
Leander only looked up from the bowl only "This...is good..." he said licking his lips. He stared at the bowl wanting to lick the bottom, but somehow he let his self-control win. "Very good," he said.
"My mother was from the South and it’s a pretty common dish...I too love this very much," she smiled.
Leander nodded. He then called the chef. "She’ll cook for me from now on. You’re fi-"
Viviana gulped. Is he going to fire the chef?
But then he seemed to have changed his mind. "You... help Signora..." he said to the Chef. "Don’t worry. You’ll be paid the same."
The chef nodded and with a bright smile, he went back to the kitchen. The two kitchen maids peeked from the kitchen. Viviana looked at him.
"You don’t have to cook a lot. Just one dish will be enough," he said.
The last thing he would want is to have his wife slave off in the kitchen. He’s never seen his mother cooking in the kitchen. His wife shouldn’t trouble herself too. But he couldn’t get over how divine her cooking tasted.
He’s never eaten such a divine dish ever in his life! How could she, with her little hands be this good?
"I don’t mind cooking for you," Viviana shrugged.
If he enjoys her cooking this much, why would she not cook for him? She didn’t think that she is good at cooking. She thought that her father praised her cooking just to not hurt her feelings. She was glad that there is someone else thinks the same too.
Come to think of it, Leander is the only person who had eaten her cooking sparing her parents.
Looking at his satisfied face, she patted her heart which was pounding. She loved that feeling. She didn’t think that she’d seen such genuine joy on his face before.
She was happy to see him filled with joy.
Although she was afraid when he was mad, she was relieved that her food had calmed him down. Cooking for him won’t be bad!
