Chapter 49: Chapter 49 I have never really committed suicide

Yolanda Greenwood had breakfast the next day and then went to the hospital.

No matter what, Gemma Morgan had always been flawless towards Melissa.

"Eldest Aunt, how are you feeling?"

Yolanda asked about Gemma’s illness, but Gemma always said it was nothing, even though she hadn’t been discharged from the hospital for so long.

"It’s nothing serious."

Gemma tugged at the corner of her mouth, her eyes reddening instantly as she looked at Yolanda’s bandaged right wrist.

"Come here, let the Eldest Aunt take a look at your hand."

She sniffled, trying to control her emotions.

"It doesn’t hurt anymore."

Yolanda obediently moved closer and placed her right hand in Gemma’s.

"The stitches can be removed in a few days."

She said with a smile, the compassion in Gemma’s eyes making her feel uneasy.

If only Gemma had been her mother... how wonderful that would have been.

"What did the doctor say? Will it affect your future life?"

"No," Yolanda shook her head.

"Are you lying to me?" Gemma’s tears surged uncontrollably. "If you don’t get proper treatment, you won’t be able to paint anymore, right?"

Yolanda felt a pang of pain, "Did... did my cousin ask you to call me here?"

Gemma nodded her head.

Before coming, Yolanda had guessed that Gemma was likely asked by Melissa Greenwood.

Now that it had been confirmed, Yolanda still found it hard to control her distress.

After all, Melissa was Gemma’s daughter. How many mothers like Eliana Reed are there in the world?

One could only say that Melissa’s fate was indeed fortunate.

Yolanda stood up, ready to leave, "Eldest Aunt, I have other things to do today, so I should be going."

"Wait!" Gemma caught Yolanda’s arm. "Are you angry with your Eldest Aunt?"

She hadn’t realized that the relationship between Yolanda and Melissa had deteriorated so badly.

"No," Yolanda shook her head. "Eldest Aunt is my cousin’s mother. It’s okay for you to want to help her."

"You think I’m helping Melissa?" Gemma detected something off in her tone. "Why would you say that?"

Yolanda hesitated, "It’s nothing, Eldest Aunt. You should rest well."

She felt that even if she spoke her mind, Gemma wouldn’t believe her.

"Yolanda!" Gemma’s tone became stern. "Yolanda, don’t you trust your Eldest Aunt?"

Yolanda didn’t respond. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust her, but... who would believe an outsider over their own daughter?

"Yolanda, what exactly is going on? Tell your Eldest Aunt, and I will make a fair judgment."

Gemma was firm, her gaze as solid as a rock.

Finally, Yolanda gave in.

She had to admit, Gemma was her favorite older relative from childhood, and she couldn’t refuse her.

"Eldest Aunt, I have never attempted suicide."

Gemma nodded, "Eldest Aunt believes you."

The Little Yolanda she knew was a resilient little thing like wild grass, nobody could bring her down, and she certainly wouldn’t give up on herself.

Thus, Gemma felt there was something amiss about the incident years ago and this time as well.

Yolanda hesitated before continuing, "The talk of my suicide was orchestrated by my mother and cousin."

"What?" Gemma’s eyes widened in shock.

She had never imagined these matters were connected to Melissa, nor could she believe it now.

"Yolanda, could there be some misunderstanding? Melissa, she..."

Gemma felt an unexplainable panic, "Melissa is somewhat selfish and headstrong, but such a thing... she shouldn’t dare."

"Eldest Aunt..."

Yolanda was calm, Gemma’s reaction having exceeded her expectations.

She chuckled softly, "Actually, I’ve never had solid proof of this, otherwise I wouldn’t have been soft-hearted—this is just my speculation."

A sadness appeared on her face, "Whether you blame, shout or hit me, it’s all right, but I won’t change my mind. I firmly believe Melissa did this, even... my mother was merely an accomplice."

"How could this be? How could this be?"

Gemma clutched her chest, her complexion growing paler.

"Eldest Aunt," Yolanda noticed something was wrong, "Eldest Aunt, are you okay?"

"I’m fine," Gemma struggled to control her emotions.

She looked at Yolanda again, "Yolanda, regardless of whether or not Melissa was responsible, I want to help you heal your hand. You love painting so much, you can’t just give up."

Yolanda was touched by Gemma still caring about her hand amidst everything.

"Eldest Aunt, Yolanda promises you, no matter what, I will not give up on painting."

She assured Gemma, "I will find a way, whether it’s healing my hand or painting anew."

"Good, good child, good child."

Gemma could no longer endure, she slowly lay down, lacking the strength to say more.

"Yolanda, you should go now. Your Eldest Aunt wants to rest for a bit."

"Okay." Yolanda nodded, worry evident on her face, "Eldest Aunt, do you need me to call the doctor?"

"No need, child." Gemma turned away from Yolanda. "Go back, child."

Yolanda nervously left the hospital. Upon reaching the lobby, she received a call from Gemma.

She quickly answered, only to find it was Melissa on the other end.

"Yolanda, you bitch, what did you say to my mom?"

Melissa immediately started hurling abuses.

Yolanda frowned, tempted to hang up.

"Yolanda, my mom’s been rushed to the emergency room, and I’m telling you, if anything happens to my mom..."

Melissa hadn’t finished speaking when the phone was hung up.

Yolanda turned and ran towards the hospital, sobbing as she ran, distressed beyond measure.

She hadn’t realized her words would have such a significant impact on Gemma; she shouldn’t have said them.

Arriving at the emergency room door, she went straight to Melissa, "What exactly is wrong with your mom?"

"Heart disease!" Melissa’s voice was cold.

"What?" Yolanda staggered, nearly falling over.

"Get out!" Melissa stood up, pushing Yolanda. "Go away, I don’t want to see you, and neither does my mother!"

Yolanda steadied herself, "Once Eldest Aunt is out of danger, I’ll leave."

"Go away, we don’t need your facade!" Melissa screamed, driving her away.

Yolanda shook her head hopelessly. She couldn’t leave; she truly couldn’t.

Just then, a nurse hurried out of the emergency room, "Who is the family member of the patient?"

"I am her daughter," Melissa quickly approached.

"Are you B-type RH-negative blood?" the nurse asked urgently.

Melissa shook her head.

The nurse furrowed her brows even more, "The patient urgently needs a blood transfusion, your family..."

"I am." Yolanda called out, "Nurse, I am B-type RH-negative blood, use mine."

The nurse glanced at her, then hurriedly walked out, "Come with me."

Yolanda quickly followed.

Melissa quietly clenched her teeth in the background.

Once they reached the transfusion room, the nurse looked at Yolanda, "You are the girl who slit her wrists a few days ago, right?"
