Chapter 271: Chapter 271 I Can’t Forgive Myself Either
Not until she returned to the apartment and hugged Yolanda Greenwood did Lola Gold feel the unreality of it all, like being in a dream.
"I told you everything would go smoothly," Yolanda celebrated for Lola.
To have won Christopher Coldson’s love and the approval of the Coldson Family was indeed a cause for celebration.
Perhaps it was because Yolanda had never had either that she was especially happy.
"It’s so unexpected," Lola said, with tears of excitement in her eyes. "I didn’t think it would go so smoothly. Even Sunny Coldson was so honest. It’s too surprising."
She sniffled, "It still feels unreal."
"Well, now that you’ve met the Coldson Family, it’s all settled," Yolanda asked her, "Have you taken him to see your mother yet?"
Lola shook her head, "I... I’ll wait a bit longer. I’m afraid..."
"Anyway, you have to meet her before getting engaged," Yolanda consoled. "Auntie will surely be upset with him, but I also believe that since she loves you so much, she will definitely not object as long as you are willing."
Lola was aware of this, but she was always afraid that Ruby Ross would be disappointed in her.
"Alright, I’ll take him to see her in the next few days," she conceded, knowing she couldn’t avoid it.
The two chatted for a while before going to bed early.
Unexpectedly, the next day as Yolanda prepared to leave for work, someone knocked on the door.
"Who could it be this early?" Lola went to answer, calling out, "Yolanda, could it be that Big Brother is back?"
"It shouldn’t be," Yolanda murmured quietly, "Big Brother said he’s returning on Wednesday."
As she gathered her things in the room, by the time she finished and came out, she saw Lola sitting quietly on the sofa, looking completely off.
"What’s wrong?" Yolanda put down her bag, sitting beside Lola. "Who was it just now?"
Lola didn’t answer, instead staring vacantly at the air.
Yolanda noticed a piece of white paper on the table. She strained to pick it up and discovered it was a pregnancy test report.
And the report was signed by Randy Carter.
Surprised, she looked at Lola, "Was Randy Carter here just now?"
Lola nodded.
"She’s pregnant?"
Lola nodded again.
Yolanda hesitated before speaking with difficulty, "She’s... not going to claim the baby is Uncle’s, right?"
Lola let out a bitter laugh, "Yolanda, you guessed right again."
How could this happen?
Yolanda’s heart ached for Lola. They had been celebrating just last night, and now this morning such a thing had occurred.
She immediately asked Lola, "Have you called Uncle? Have you confirmed it?"
Lola shook her head, took a deep breath to steady herself, "Okay, Yolanda, you go to work. I’ll handle this."
"Alright, just don’t be impulsive and see what Uncle has to say," Yolanda advised her.
"Don’t worry," Lola assured her as she saw her out the door.
All the way to work, Yolanda was distracted. When she arrived at the office, she couldn’t resist calling Christopher Coldson.
The call connected quickly.
"Randy Carter came to see us today," Yolanda came straight to the point.
There was a noticeable silence from the other end before he spoke with reluctance, "I’m sorry for the trouble."
"Christopher Coldson, what the hell are you talking about?" Yolanda suddenly became angry. "Is Randy Carter’s child yours or not?"
Christopher Coldson was silent again.
Yolanda couldn’t stand it, "Christopher Coldson, are you even a man? Just yesterday, you were swearing oaths that you wouldn’t marry anyone but Lola, and now you’ve created a life. Christopher Coldson, what in the world were you thinking?"
"I don’t know; my mind is a mess right now," came Christopher Coldson’s frustrated voice.
"The child is really yours?" Yolanda struggled to believe and asked again.
"I don’t know," Christopher Coldson’s reply only frustrated her further.
Yolanda clenched her teeth, "Have you called Lola?"
"Not yet."
"Even talking in person would be better..."
"Yolanda, I haven’t figured out how to deal with this. I have no face to see Lola."
"What do you mean?" Yolanda could not help but curse, "Christopher Coldson, you’ve let Lola down once already, and if it happens again, neither we nor anybody else will forgive you."
"I won’t forgive myself either," Christopher Coldson said with a bitter laugh.
Knowing Lola’s temperament, Yolanda realized that whatever she said would be futile, and so she ended with one last reminder to Christopher Coldson, "Let me tell you, no matter what you are thinking right now, you had better call Lola right away; don’t leave her hanging and make her suffer."
After speaking, she hung up the phone.
Yolanda was now in the late stages of pregnancy and found it quite inconvenient to move around. Going to the office, for the most part, she would just look at design drawings and provide ideas for design initiatives, with hands-on work being quite limited.
In fact, President Ken even suggested that Yolanda needn’t come to the office and could instead work from home online.
Yolanda herself had refused, feeling the company had already provided her with plenty of benefits. With more than a hundred days of maternity leave ahead, she wanted to do what she could for the company before starting her leave.
Finally, when the workday ended, Yolanda hurriedly took a taxi home.
Upon entering, she saw Lola just as she had left her, as if she hadn’t moved from the sofa, still sitting there, dazed.
"Lola?" Yolanda put down her things. "How is it? What did Christopher Coldson say?"
Lola turned to look at her, her voice breaking as she spoke, "Yolanda, Christopher hasn’t contacted me."
"What?" Yolanda was furious. "What’s wrong with that guy? I told him clearly to..."
She stopped herself in time, gently rubbing Lola’s back, "Don’t worry, if he doesn’t reach out to us, we’ll go to him. I’ll call him right now."
As she dialed the number, cursing Christopher Coldson inwardly for being a jerk, Lola snatched the phone away at the last moment.
"Yolanda, you’re right, I’ll go to him."
It was typical of Lola’s decisive nature; she got up and returned to her room to change her clothes. She had to confront Christopher Coldson in person to understand what was going on.
"Lola, should I come with you?" Yolanda was worried.
After changing, Lola hesitated, "Are you sure you’re up to it? Won’t it be too hard on you?"
"It’s fine, I’ll just be sitting down anyway. It’s no trouble." Yolanda was indeed tired, but she remembered that during her hardest times, Lola had been there for her.
She couldn’t be absent at a time like this.
"Okay." Lola indeed felt uncertain because she knew Christopher was now mostly living in the family mansion. She was somewhat daunted by the prospect of going alone.
So, she drove, taking Yolanda with her to the Coldson family mansion.
To their surprise, it was Cooper Coldson who answered the door.
"Come in," he stepped aside, mentioning, "Mom and my aunt are out playing cards, and Uncle is upstairs in his room."
He knew Lola was coming to settle scores and glanced at Yolanda, "Have you had dinner?"
At that time, it was likely that Yolanda had just left work, and they had come straight here, probably without having eaten.
"We haven’t," Lola replied for Yolanda, "If it’s not too much trouble, could you ask the servant to make something for her?"
