Chapter 264: Chapter 264: Cooper Coldson Wants to Do a DNA Test with That Child
Melissa Greenwood stood up and returned to her room, feeling utterly discomposed.
Why had things progressed to this point?
She had worked so hard, scheming and planning; why had Yolanda Greenwood still managed to win Cooper Coldson’s love?
Now she couldn’t even win him over?
She truly couldn’t accept it, the indescribable sense of defeat swept over her entire body.
"Mommy?" Little May’s voice came from the door.
"Get out!" Melissa cursed, having no mood to deal with the child right now.
Fortunately, the child was smart and had always managed to please her, so she was mostly kind to Little May.
"Mommy," to her surprise, this time Little May did not obediently leave, but instead pushed the door open and came in, "Don’t be unhappy, if you are unhappy, May is unhappy too."
Melissa glared at her angrily, "Don’t speak such useless nonsense, you can’t do anything, hurry out."
"Mommy, I can make you happy," Little May took steps forward.
Melissa frowned, "What do you mean?"
Little May approached the bed and suddenly took out a transparent little bag from behind her, containing some white powder.
"What is this?" Melissa’s eyes widened, as she yanked her closer, "Where did you get this?"
"This is good stuff, Daddy said when you feel unhappy, just take a sniff, and all the troubles will go away."
Little May was frightened, threw the thing on the bed, and backed away, "I found it at home."
"At home? Our home in the States?" Melissa was infuriated, "Do you not realize if this is discovered, we could all go to jail!"
Thankfully, they had returned on the Coldson Family’s private jet, otherwise...
She hadn’t expected Little May to carry such a thing, and the thought was frightening.
"But... didn’t Mommy bring some too?" Little May suddenly said.
Melissa’s face turned pale with fright, "How do you know? What did you see?"
Little May blinked, "I saw Mommy putting a big bag of this stuff in her purse."
"Shut up!" Melissa’s heart nearly leaped out of her chest, "I tell you, you saw wrong, you must not tell anyone about this, got it?"
Then she suddenly asked, "You haven’t mentioned this to Uncle Coldson or Yolanda, have you?"
Little May shook her head, "It’s a secret, Daddy said only the closest people can know."
"Before, this was a secret between Daddy and me, now, it’s a secret between Mommy and me," Little May said innocently, "Mommy, take a sniff, and then no more troubles."
"Shut up!" Melissa raised her palm and slapped Little May, "Forget all the filthy things Brooks Parker taught you, I am telling you, don’t touch this stuff, I won’t touch it, and neither will you, got it?"
Little May’s eyes reddened, and tears were about to fall, "May understands."
"Go out, Mommy is annoyed and wants to be alone for a while." Melissa didn’t want to see her cry, pushing and shoving, she threw her out.
The door closed, Little May rubbed her face, but the tears quickly disappeared.
She looked at the door for a moment, then went downstairs to play.
Inside the room, Melissa turned to see the white powder on the bed.
She hesitated for a moment, then picked it up and threw it in the trash, but she couldn’t stop herself from staring at it.
Just a light sniff shouldn’t be a problem, right?
The thought that sprang to mind startled Melissa, but once some ideas took root, they couldn’t be stopped.
She was reminded of something Brooks Parker had once said, that the pleasure this stuff brought was thousands of times greater than sexual ecstasy.
But the joke was, she had never experienced the wonder of a man’s love.
Her few encounters with Brooks Parker had been almost forced upon her, and long before that, her heart had been set on Cooper Coldson, unable to reach the pinnacle of such acts.
Melissa stared at the package for a long while, finally moved forward, bent down and picked it out of the trash.
Through the transparent plastic bag, she examined the substance over and over but could see nothing special.
Melissa had never tried this stuff, only seen it on TV; apparently, you’re supposed to block one nostril and inhale forcefully through the other.
Just opening the packet and taking a whiff should be fine, right?
With that thought, after another inner struggle, Melissa finally opened the seal, took a deep breath, and slowly approached.
She sniffed carefully at the opening, barely feeling anything special.
Was this thing really that powerful?
Shaking her head, Melissa resealed it and then placed the package deep in her drawer.
She pondered and decided she had to see Cooper immediately, to ask him face to face.
After arriving at the Coldson Group, the people in the president’s office said that Cooper had just finished a meeting and was still in the conference room; Richard Reyes, his assistant, had gone there.
"Fine, I’ll find him myself." Melissa made her way to the conference room, only to find the door wasn’t closed, and the clear sound of two people talking could be heard from inside.
"President, I’ve looked into the matter you asked me to," said Richard.
"Go on," it was clear Cooper was interested.
"The doctors at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital said that DNA testing can be done even if the child is not yet born."
Outside the door, Melissa’s eyes widened with alarm—was Cooper Coldson having doubts about Yolanda’s child? Was he going to do a DNA test with the baby?
"How?" As expected, Cooper asked.
"They can extract the baby’s DNA sequence either through amniocentesis or from the expecting mother’s peripheral blood."
Cooper frowned slightly, "So, it has to involve the expectant mother."
Richard nodded.
Cooper then inquired, "And does this pose any risk to the baby or the expectant mother?"
"Definitely." Richard continued, "First off, this could cause some psychological impact on the expectant mother. Secondly, there are certain risks with this procedure; hospitals typically advise to wait until after the child is born."
"I understand," Cooper seemingly dismissed the thought almost instantly.
"President, are you suspecting..." Richard boldly ventured.
Cooper shot him a glare.
Richard immediately clamped up, awkwardly smiled and said, "Do you have anything else for me to do? If not, I’ll get going."
"Get lost!"
Richard hurriedly left.
By then, Melissa had already gone. She told the reception, "I saw Cooper was busy, so I’ll head back first, no need to let him know I was here."
"Miss Greenwood, take care." Nearly everyone at Coldson knew Melissa was the future Mrs. Coldson, and naturally took her word as command.
Melissa dragged herself back to the Greenwood Family home, climbed the stairs, and hurled herself into the large bed.
She pummeled the bed madly, not understanding why things had turned out this way, why she was such a failure?
Was Cooper really going to live happily ever after with Yolanda and their supposed twins?
"No way!" She shouted, sitting up, her gaze once again drawn to the distant drawer.
