Dungeon Raider System -
Chapter 684 - 684: Lonely day Part 2
When Pangeotis class finished, Uriel's next stop was obviously the library. It pained him to see the building he loved so much in shambles, but what was even more painful to him was to see Gertrude instead of his friendly librarian, Mister Scofield.
"Good morning." Uriel voiced out but the woman who ignored him. Despite it being a customary gesture and had no meaning behind it, it still annoyed him to be ignored like that. 'How did she even survive this long?' He inwardly pondered.
She wasn't just old, she also looked the part and dressed accordingly. Her fashion sense was so outdated Uriel chuckled when thinking her attire may as well belong to his field of study, but his amusement was cut short when the woman snorted at him.
"This is a library, if you can't even stay quiet then I'll have to ask you to leave."
Not wanting to be kicked out of the library, Uriel lowered his head and dug his nose into the first book in his line. In the past months he had the chance to read as much as he wanted whenever he wanted.
He didn't have to cater to Luna's whims, Medusa's nagging, endure Dragonfang's annoying jokes or even Nika bothering him in his sleep. He also didn't have to work, not for money at least, and it could be argued that he was living his best life.
If someone had told his past self how did a perfect life look like it would have been pretty close to what he was experiencing now. Still, there was one thing that kept him from enjoying his return to college to its fullest. It would have been easy to assume it was him feeling lonely and missing his friends, but what kept him from living his best life was the fact that his research had gone stale.
"All the knowledge in this books and I can't find a single clue on what to do next." Uriel let out a sigh after exiting the library. A quick check on his smartphone's system app made Uriel sigh even deeper.
In the past, whenever Uriel reached a dead end the system had provided him with a variety of tasks he could choose to perform or not. From finding out what happened to Mister Scofield to even obvious tasks such as surviving. At first he assumed they were given at random, especially since the rewards were usually the natural consequence of the actions.
For instance, killing a cryptid could result in him becoming stronger, but only to the point where his body could endure and the surplus stat points were wasted. The reward he acquired after defeating the nameless creature was nothing more than Atsa's belongings which Uriel could have grabbed from the ground himself.
However, the more he looked into the system the more Uriel suspected there was some order in the middle of that apparent chaos to the point where he suspected an invisible hand guided his every step. Now, however, he wasn't so sure.
After looking back on his memories Uriel realized the system did not react negatively whenever he made a 'wrong' decision and with further testing he found out there were only two ways he could trigger a response from the system.
The first one was to perform some actions for the first time which usually resulted in him earning a title, a sort of achievement, though it usually carried a negative connotation. The second, however, was far more interesting. Whenever Uriel's research moved forward, the system would usually point him to the next step.
Both cases had something in common, which was that the system never provided him with information Uriel didn't possess himself in at least a subconscious level. Like the time the eclipse possessing Rocky showed up and Uriel got a system message asking him to kill him before sunrise and to prevent him from getting back to the city.
At the time he didn't think much of it, but in hindsight he realized that he already knew that defeating him during daylight would have been more difficult as all the cryptids in the vicinity would have been drawn towards him. There was also the fact that had Rocky made it to the city before them, he would have likely manipulated the guards or the cryptid hunting agency in his favor.
Thinking about these issues, Uriel didn't even notice when he found himself in front of the cafeteria where both students and professors would grab their breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. When he started his studies Uriel didn't have any money and never visited that building which explained why he had no clue there were several unspoken rules of etiquette.
Paying no mind to the strange looks he got from the students making the line, Uriel ordered his breakfast, grabbed his plate and sat on the first open seat he found which unfortunately had been reserved.
"What the hell is that weirdo doing in my table?" One of the wealthy students made a disgusted face when he noticed Uriel sitting on his table.
"Get lost." Uriel let out with a no nonsense attitude that made the student cower in fear, yet he refused to back down encouraged by the college's strict no violence rule.
"Do you even know who you're speaking to?" The young man asked with the same arrogant tone he used with his family's employees.
"I do not, please tell me your name so I can remember it properly for when we meet again... outside." Uriel smiled at the young student while letting out just enough flux energy to make his eyes shimmer in blue.
Suddenly, the young man's confidence faltered at the same time he had a hard time containing his bladder. Everything about Uriel shouted 'danger' yet he refused to listen and when he wanted to notice not even his friends remained by his side.
"I'm... huh..."
"I knew you would find trouble soon rather than later, but this is too fast even for you." Nika appeared out of nowhere and grabbed Uriel by the arm pulling him away before things escalated even further.
