Chapter 683 - 683: Lonely day Part 1

Uriel woke up in a sweaty panic and his first thought was the typical 'I'm late for class' he had whenever he was sleep deprived due to his studies. After taking a look around he fell flat on the bed once more with the intention of going back to sleep, but then he realized he was back in his old dorm room and for a minute he remained confused.

"I really am late for class!" He swiftly got up, took a shower and got dressed in record time, but before exiting his room he checked under his bed like usual. He wasn't looking for monsters, be them imaginary or real, but for someone in particular. "She's not here today either." He let out a dejected sigh before carrying on with his day.

Since Uriel was late it came as no surprise when he found the college halls to be empty, though some claw marks acted as a reminder of the cataclysm the city which was now called New Texas by those in the know. With the new name also came new possibilities, but some ghosts of the past still haunted Uriel and he somewhat expected Mark and his goons to wait just around the corner to give him trouble.

"Things will be different this time." Uriel clenched his fists right before entering Pangeotis class not in frustration but in excitement.

"Mister Sage, why am I not surprised you're late." The old professor chuckled making his round belly wobble like a jellyfish. The rest of the students didn't share the professor's good mood over having a full classroom and many scoffed at Uriel for being late to a class most of them had to fight so hard to get into.

Although it had been announced for months that the university would 'soon' open its gates, most of the buildings couldn't be repaired due to suffering structural damage which delayed the re inauguration.

This gave enough time for people all over the continent to apply, which they happily did so. Not just because their program was top of the continent and they possessed several important figures in their roster, but because the city of New Texas achieved something no city had ever done before.

They withstood the direct attack of a titan rank cryptid while at the same time defending from an inside attack. Thousands of people died and only about ten percent of the buildings didn't suffer any structural damage, but that was a far greater outcome than any other megacity could strive for.

Rumors of a secret weapon being developed in the city were also a huge factor in the sudden popularity of the city which resulted in crowded classrooms and people competing to get into the best courses. And among all humanity studies, Pangeotis class remained at the top.

"What an idiot," A young man with the looks of a typical slum dweller scoffed. "If he's not interested in showing up in time he should have left his spot open for somebody else."

"Shut up! He's probably loaded." A woman about his same age prodded him with her elbow.

"He's probably from one of 'those' families." Another male student rebuked as he leaned in from behind.

"He's not," A blond girl with eyes of two different colors shook her head then stated with confidence. "I would know him if that was the case."

Her words caused the fuss to die down only to be stoked when instead of taking a seat, Uriel walked forward and placed a bunch of rolled sheets of paper on top of Pangeotis' desk.

"Let me introduce everyone to my teaching assistant, Sage. He was the top student of last year's anthropology class which is why he's going to be the one actually grading your work and tests. I advice you to stay on his good side if you want to pass this course," Pangeotis said in a scolding tone. "or if you want to live." The last part he kept to himself and the students only saw him fumble.

It wasn't Uriel being a heavenly rank what scared him, but the fact that he survived the first expedition to the Alamo dungeon when even a Colonel died. He also not only survived the downfall of the city, but returned with more wealth than the average hunter would see their entire lives.

There were few possible explanation as to how a slum dweller could achieve so much and he didn't like any more than the other.

Being the first class it was just an introduction for the subject of their study and also a chance for the lazy students to drop out without any consequences. It was on everyone's best interest that people who would not take the archaeology class seriously to switch courses, especially for those who would rather give up their spots to wealthy students in exchange for a hefty sum of money.

Nevertheless, before Pangeotis class finished no one wanted to drop out the subject anymore. Not after he mentioned the possibility of encountering ancient artifacts with powers comparable to those of an advanced weapon.

Pangeotis had known about said artifacts for a long time, yet they were so rare it was kept as a secret from the general population. After the lost city of San Antonio was wiped out, though, the market enjoyed a sudden influx of artifacts with all sorts of abilities and it was theorized that hunters were acquiring them inside the crater.

"And that is why archaeology is now considered at the same level as engineering." Pangeotis finished after noticing their time was almost up. After a few seconds, the blond woman with different colored eyes lifted her hand to ask a question, which she only did once the professor nodded at her.

"I still don't get it. Why waste time looking around in old ruins when you could just buy an advanced weapon?"

"That is a good question," Pangeotis nodded in reply. "but I'm afraid we ran out of time already."
