Chapter 553: Chapter 552: If We Don’t Go In, Then We Won’t
The speech ended, the seats were vacated, and the banquet began again.
"Young Master Griffith, the old master would like to see you alone," a servant reported to William Griffith.
William let go of Cherish Turner’s hand, whispering to her, "I’ll be right back."
Cherish nodded and watched as he walked away, feeling alone in the corner where she stood. She felt a sudden urge to leave as stares from others bore down into her. She felt strangely lonely and isolated; she even questioned why she was here in the first place.
"She must be Young Master Griffith’s mistress, and not a particularly attractive one at that," reminded a voice.
"Yes, who would know how she managed to ensnare Young Master Griffith!" replied another.
"She’s probably just a fling," a third voice guessed.
After their derisive remarks, they burst into laughter. Cherish stepped back, her lips pressed together in embarrassment. A group of women stood defiantly in front of her, deliberately trying to humiliate her.
The next moment, a displeased male voice yelled, "Get out of the way!"
The women froze, then made way hastily when they saw a stern Yannis Griffith approaching. Daniel Peacock, who was about to step forward, stopped abruptly, his glass tightly gripped in his hand.
Bending over, Yannis looked at Cherish, his voice was concern, "Are you okay?"
"I’m fine," responded Cherish, shaking her head, trying to sound calm.
Yannis attempted to say something comforting, but he couldn’t find the right words. Finally, he said, "Things may not be as you’re perceiving them."
"Miss, the old master requests your presence," a servant reported again.
Cherish looked in the direction of the servant, uncertain about her next course of action. Yannis said, "I’ll accompany you."
With Yannis by her side, Cherish moved through the banquet hall, amidst the curious stares of onlookers, and left the hall. Daniel Peacock watched them depart, his gaze following them the whole way.
Just as they stepped out of the banquet hall, they ran into a middle-aged man. "Second Young Master Griffith," he greeted.
Yannis paused, his handsome face darkening, "Cherish, you go on ahead. I’ll be there soon."
With no other option, Cherish let the servant guide her to a suite in the hotel. She was led through the open doors into a room finely carpeted, with each step in her high heels imprinting onto the plush fabric. As she entered, her gaze was met by the sight of two men in the room.
Robert Griffith and William Griffith sat face to face, the atmosphere tense and fraught with danger.
"The ceremony is over; I am leaving now." William frowned and, without any formalities, stood up to leave, taking Cherish’s hand in preparation to leave.
But Robert declared boldly, "Stop! And hear me now! This woman will never set foot into the Griffith family home! Not until I’m dead!"
"If it comes to that, so be it," William replied indifferently.
Robert suddenly succumbed to a fit of rage, standing up and banging his cane against the floor, "You ungrateful child! I didn’t have to take responsibility for you! If you weren’t a member of the Griffith family, I would never have bothered! Sophie is appointed to be the Griffith’s daughter-in-law! You have no say in this!"
"If it weren’t for Cherish, I wouldn’t have even considered getting married!" William abruptly halted and retorted, his words ringing through the room.
But, to Cherish, his words carried a different meaning entirely.
Robert seemed to remember something; a barrage of chaotic images flashing through his mind the thought of an ideal family, which felt suffocating, suppressed him. His blood seemed to surge to his head; a sudden wave of dizziness blackened his vision, and he slumped to the ground.
Cherish exclaimed, "Chairman Griffith!"
William rushed to Robert’s side. For the first time, Cherish heard him yell, "Grandfather!"
