Chapter 512: Chapter 511: Like a Child
Robert Griffith’s hand tightened around the brush, and with a "snap," he flung it onto the desk. He looked up at his son, who bore a resemblance to him, yet seemed so estranged. His old eyes were locked in anger, and he asked incredulously, "Is that how much you dislike coming back home?"
William Griffith remained silent. Robert sat down on the sofa, holding a precious purple clay teapot, and asked calmly, "Yannis has been in the company for a while now. What do you think of him? Is he suitable to take over?"
William stood in the study, sunlight slanting across him. His handsome face was expressionless as he mechanically replied, "Suitable."
"Good. In one month, we’ll hold a press conference for Yannis to officially take over the Griffith corporation. Meanwhile, you can stop worrying about the company’s affairs, as Yannis will handle everything." Robert tapped the purple clay teapot in his hand as if he had already made up his mind and was merely asking William casually.
"I’m leaving first." With no objections, William turned to leave.
Not three words into the conversation and seeing him walk away, anger surged in Robert’s chest. He gripped the purple clay teapot, slamming it on the coffee table, sarcastically saying, "It seems I don’t need you to come home anymore. I can just call you on the phone."
William’s footsteps faltered, but he left without a word.
Driving back to Cherry Blossom Garden, William returned to his already cleaned ninth-floor apartment. As he was going upstairs, he received an international long-distance call. It was from the United States. He held the phone, listening to the fluent English on the other end, which carried a note of regret. He didn’t say anything, his entire demeanor solemn, his handsome face somber.
As the elevator arrived, Cherish Turner, wearing an apron and holding a bag of garbage, was waiting for it to come up.
William’s gaze swept over her coldly, causing Cherish to tremble. Why did such a gaze seem so melancholic? But then, he suddenly reached out and yanked her into the elevator, holding her tightly in his arms. She struggled in fear, yelling for him to let go, but he held her even tighter, as if afraid of losing something.
Careless of her resistance, his mind echoed the words from the phone call earlier, "We’re sorry, we’ve done our best..."
"What are you doing... I can’t breathe..." Cherish gasped in pain, but he muttered hoarsely, "Don’t move, let me hold you."
That tone... had a hint of pleading.
What happened to him?
He blocked the elevator doors with his body, trapping the elevator at the top floor. Cherish was held tightly in his arms, but his usually domineering embrace felt different at this moment, making her feel a little stifled. It wasn’t so much a struggle to breathe, but rather the fleeting look in his eye earlier.
That look, as desolate as a fallen star in the silent night, resembled that moment at the airport when they parted.
Cherish didn’t know what to do, and her resistance gradually ceased.
She wanted to ask what happened, but she had no right.
She was still holding the bag of garbage in her hand, and the apron she wore was stained with grease. Frowning slightly, she found a topic and said softly, "I’m a little dirty..."
"It’s okay, just for a while." William’s voice deepened even more as he buried his head in her neck and breathed in her scent. In this small space, his strong arms encircled her, and for a brief moment, she filled the emptiness and hesitation he felt.
She hesitated before reaching out a hand, gripping his sleeve.
Like this... he seemed like a child. A big child.
