Detective Agency of the Bizarre -
Chapter 726 - 726 245
726: 245.
The Last Letter 726: 245.
The Last Letter Anna said that after entering Himfast, they must restrain their aura and power; Lu Li must carry Serica Darel on his back because Anna couldn’t.
Lu Li did not refuse, pinning the investigator badge to his coat, walking up to Serica Darel.
“Thank you…”
Serica Darel whispered as she climbed onto Lu Li’s back.
Perhaps it was the damp and cold morning, but the body on his back began to tremble slightly.
Due to prolonged starvation, Serica Darel was very light, likely weighing less than 80 pounds.
Carrying her for a mile didn’t even make Lu Li’s breathing become labored.
The sparse and cold procession was lining up before the wooden gate, and the attire of Lu Li’s trio quickly caught the guards’ attention: a dark-haired, dark-eyed man full of mystery, a woman with a sunken jaw wrapped in strange bandages, and a figure cloaked, face hidden in shadow.
A guard holding a perception clock approached them, perhaps because they reached the city, Serica Darel no longer trembled.
The guard stared intently at the clock as he drew near, feeling slightly reassured that these three strange folks didn’t trigger any changes in the perception clock.
However, during city entry registration, the Captain of the Guard noticed and recognized Lu Li’s investigator badge, and after confirming his identity, asked if he needed assistance contacting the Exorcist United Organization.
Lu Li politely declined the Captain of the Guard, and passed through the wooden gate into Himfast.
The bustling crowd on the street made Serica Darel tremble again.
The scaffolding that had been ubiquitous on their previous visit was gone, replaced by unsightly, simple wooden shacks interspersed among neat and aesthetically pleasing buildings.
Himfast, now housing over a million people, became more bustling and lively than before, but carriages and steam cars were hard to spot.
They were now rare resources, especially after the “incident where hungry citizens attacked a noble’s carriage and dismembered the horses.”
After leaving the outer district, many residents gathered in the spacious intersection.
“Every newborn child is Heaven’s hope.”
The gathered young couples followed the priest in chorus.
Walking past the crowd, Lu Li entered a roadside clinic.
The clinic was filled with a faint smell of disinfectant, devoid of patients.
Poor people typically wouldn’t extravagantly seek medical care and wealthy people wouldn’t choose roadside clinics.
Therefore, the middle-aged doctor was warmly welcoming to Lu Li and the others, reaching out to help Serica Darel sit.
Perhaps due to the injury on her lower lip, Serica Darel warily avoided the middle-aged doctor’s help.
However, during the subsequent disinfection, she didn’t stop the doctor’s touch and silently endured the sharp pain of alcohol on her wounds.
“Her wounds are bad, but it seems they were previously disinfected?
The bandages were also professionally applied, just make sure there’s no infection moving forward.”
The middle-aged doctor remarked sympathetically about the poor soul, squatting down and lifting Serica Darel’s pant leg to check her right leg.
“She…”
Just as the doctor began to speak, a shadow silently slipped into his own shadow.
A tide of memories surged into his mind, images flickering, causing an intense urge to vomit much like twisted knowledge, Anna endured it, suddenly perceiving something.
…
The manor stood nearby, sunlight scattered like pearls, a gentle afternoon breeze blowing.
Annie gently swayed her emerald green canopy, and beneath the shade, an aged figure was seated.
Rope of Descent, Old Micklos.
That night at the cabin, Old Micklos’s true form appeared outside the door, and Anna’s ritual touched it.
“Why are you here?”
Anna coldly stared at the back of the figure.
The head beneath the tree slowly turned, the face wasn’t Old Micklos, it kept changing.
Sara, Adam, Old Micklos, a beggar, a woman calling for help, a mouse, a doctor…
The face shifted, flickering through the faces of those Anna had possessed, finally coming to a halt like time itself, settling on Anna’s face, ceasing to change.
“You should call me…”
“Anna” her clothes became mottled and broken, fluttering like butterfly wings as they scattered apart, revealing the same white dress.
“The other me.”
…
“…Her ankle is sprained, just rest for a few days and she’ll be fine.”
After a moment of silence, the middle-aged doctor slowly spoke, releasing his grasp on her ankle.
Serica Darel silently pulled her pant leg down, covering skin raised with goosebumps from the doctor’s touch.
“Go to Aunt Mary,” Anna softly suggested.
Lu Li nodded slightly, carrying the rigid body of Serica Darel out of the clinic.
As he prepared to leave the clinic, Lu Li remembered something and turned back to ask, “How many shillings.”
The middle-aged doctor stood motionless beside the oil lamp, his shadow stretched long.
“…150 shillings.”
Lu Li paid the medical fee and headed for the Champs Elysees District with Serica Darel and Anna.
Once they left, the clinic returned to its original silence.
The doctor, still as a sculpture, resumed motion, tearing a page from a notepad and writing down a segment, lethargically walking to the door and locking the wooden clinic door.
He turned and opened the medicine cabinet, retrieving the lowest shelf’s bottle of sleeping pills, and carried the oil lamp into the bedroom.
The oil lamp on the nightstand, the doctor unscrewed the cap, shadow on the wall pills clattered down his throat, dissolving in his stomach.
Soon, the doctor fell onto the bed, sinking into a deep sleep.
A shadow detached from his body, traversing eerily under the oil lamp.
It swept away the notepad paper from the desk, disappearing beneath the clinic’s door frame.
In the clinic bedroom, calm but gradually weakening breathing sounded.
He would now sleep for a very long time, perhaps languishing in dreams and never waking again.
…
“Please don’t leave me…”
Serica Darel softly pleaded as Lu Li prepared to take her to the church, “Let me stay with you a bit longer…
I’ll leave voluntarily once you depart from Himfast!”
“Let’s take this poor woman with us…” Anna sympathetically agreed.
Lu Li consented, carrying Serica Darel to the Champs Elysees District.
They found the Administrator of Champs Elysees District to inquire about Aunt Mary, but the Administrator puzzledly informed them the house owner hadn’t returned.
With the Administrator accompanying them, they went to number 66.
After the house was entrusted to the City Hall, three families were arranged to live there: a family of three, an elderly couple, and a young woman.
They expressed gratitude to Lu Li and Anna for lending the house but were equally unaware of Aunt Mary’s return.
Arriving at the second-floor study, it remained unchanged, except for some of Aunt Mary’s personal belongings packed into boxes, piled in the study’s corner.
“We haven’t moved anything here,” said the elderly couple at the study door.
Lu Li placed Serica Darel in the chair behind the desk and gazed at the windowsill.
There was no letter on the windowsill, but Anna found it on the bookshelf.
Lu Li unfolded the letter and read its contents aloud.
Serica Darel, behind the desk, appeared calm, as if also listening.
The deepest terror flickered in her eyes.
This wasn’t the final letter she had prepared!
