Chapter 725 - 725 Nostalgia and Shadows in Watch Town
725: Nostalgia and Shadows in Watch Town 725: Nostalgia and Shadows in Watch Town [Watch Town…
a place that evokes nostalgia.]
[So many years and it has barely changed here.
I wonder if he is still here?]
[I should leave, this place is no different from Belfast.]
[Replenish some supplies, I plan to continue west to visit Star Town, which was once our home too.]
The brief letter silently conveys Aunt Mary’s thoughts and whereabouts.
Star Town is west of Sugard Mountain, only about fifty miles from Himfast.
“It’s getting dark, we should set off tomorrow morning.”
Anna looked out the window as the street began to darken, and the lurking darkness was eager to try.
They searched the inn for a room to rest for the night.
Anna found the attic, which fortunately hadn’t been ransacked; besides an oil lamp and a few candles, there was bedding piled in the corner — someone had once camped in the attic.
Before the outside was completely shrouded in darkness, Anna found some planks to nail shut the windows.
She unreservedly released the resentment aura, warning the approaching weirdness.
The low, narrow attic inexplicably invoked a sense of safety.
At least, Serica Darel was no longer trembling, and her heartbeat was no longer so pronounced.
Lu Li set down the oil lamp and sat beside it.
Anna opened a can and shared it with Lu Li.
After a pause, she opened another can and handed it to Serica Darel.
“Thank you…” Serica Darel stiffly accepted the can.
The not-so-rich aroma of meat wafted into her nostrils, yet it made Serica Darel involuntarily swallow.
She sneaked a glance at Lu Li, seeing that he wasn’t paying attention to her, she grabbed a piece of meat and put it in her mouth.
“Mmm…”
Serica Darel whimpered, covering her aching cheek.
The gauze soaked with can juice slowly oozed blood.
“Chew less,” Lu Li advised her.
The wound was in a very bad spot, and given the limited conditions, it might take months to heal.
“Okay.”
Serica Darel nodded, slightly slowing her chewing pace, although she still ate quickly.
After dinner, Lu Li gave up the floor bedding to Serica Darel, who needed rest.
The attic was inconvenient for lighting a fire for warmth, but fortunately, the cold wind was kept outside, and it wasn’t too cold inside the attic.
As time passed, Lu Li gradually slipped into a dream leaning against the low cabinet.
And Serica Darel, who was supposed to be asleep, slowly sat up.
She gazed at Lu Li’s sleeping face, the sound of her heartbeat once again uncontrollably becoming clear, she extended her palm, gently caressing the face she so desired.
The resentment aura enveloping the attic separated, entangling around Serica Darel.
Reluctantly withdrawing her hand, in the oil lamp’s light, her elongated shadow left from under her.
“I can’t believe you’d be jealous of yourself,” Serica Darel said softly to Anna after regaining control of her body.
“It was your body that touched him,” Anna said coldly.
The projection still hovered by Serica Darel’s side, ready to possess her if she did anything.
“But you’re in control,” Serica Darel looked at Lu Li.
“Your taste is indeed good…
righteous, kind, willing to help unknown survivors; it’s hard to imagine someone with such character still exists in the apocalypse…”
She didn’t believe Anna’s stories until she became part of one.
Feeling the coldness around her, Serica Darel chuckled, “Alright, I won’t talk about him anymore.”
Anna nodded lightly, her eyes suddenly dropping to the nailed shut window.
Between the planks, a scarlet eye was maliciously peering into the attic.
In the next moment, the eye in the plank gap vanished, and a faint tearing sound came from outside.
Anna dissipated the invisible hand, refocusing on Serica Darel.
Serica Darel guessed what was happening outside, somewhat envious of the power Anna possessed: “According to the story, you’ll reach Star Town tomorrow to get the third letter, and finally go to Aunt Mary’s home in Himfast to pick up the last letter.”
“When the time comes, as promised, I’ll let you go.”
“Thank you.”
Serica Darel licked her wound; it hurt, but it couldn’t cover her hope.
Temporarily freed from control, Serica Darel lay back down on the floor bedding.
She had prepared for several days for today, and after being controlled by Anna for half a day, she needed rest.
Anna’s aura protected the two in the attic.
Despite strange noises still echoing from downstairs or in the street, they didn’t approach the attic.
Serica Darel did not doubt the dangers lurking in the fog-enshrouded darkness.
Without Anna, she would have been devoured by the gathering monstrosities in an instant.
Perhaps Mr.
Lu Li would be too.
Noble character is like a lighthouse guiding lost ships in the darkness, yet it is fragile and worthless.
…
The next morning, in the cool air, Lu Li woke up.
Anna dismounted the planks from the window; the mist had just cleared, a thin fog enveloping the desolate streets and alleys.
Serica Darel opened her eyes shortly after.
She should have woken earlier, her movements swift as she scrambled off the floor bedding without even stretching.
As it gradually brightened outside, they left the attic and headed toward Star Town.
The current Star Town, like most villages and towns in the Ailen Peninsula, had its residents nearly all withdrawn into Himfast, everywhere was scavenged chaos.
However, due to its proximity to Himfast, passersby occasionally came through, as well as some residents unwilling to leave their homes remained.
The latter are easily identified.
Those houses with doors and windows nailed shut, thick curtains drawn over the second-floor windows usually had residents hiding inside.
After circling around Star Town, Anna was the first to discover Aunt Mary’s markings.
Still the second floor of an inn, the dusty letter lay on the windowsill.
[It’s still there, just not the same as it once was.]
[Yet I still feel nostalgic about it…]
[Not much supplies left, nothing gained after circling except for my mood.]
[I think maybe I should return to Himfast and stay there.
Even if disaster strikes, I will be buried with this city.]
[Anna, Lu Li, I hope you don’t see this letter.
If you do, I apologize for chasing my marks to several places.]
“Himfast…
did Aunt Mary go back?”
Anna said, lowering her eyes.
Following all the way, it still pointed to Himfast in the end.
Coincidentally, Serica Darel’s destination was there as well.
…
Himfast.
On the outskirts of the City of Art, tree trunks stripped of branches formed wooden walls stretching to the horizon.
Although crude, it was the quickest way to construct a wall capable of enclosing a city.
As Anna approached Himfast, she descended, retracting all aura.
Apart from the suspicious black robe, no one would suspect she was a wraith.
However, not long after walking, an accident occurred: Serica Darel stumbled.
Her chin bled again, her hands were scraped raw by the rough stone on the road, and worse, her leg was injured.
Anna said it was somewhat severe; Serica Darel couldn’t walk on her own and needed someone to carry her.
