Chapter 28: [28] Fusion experiment {End}

Beep~ Beep~ Beep~

Laying on the operation table, Zick calmly stared at the bright light, lit on the ceiling.

Dr. Brawn coldly applied a blue ointment on Zick’s chest.

Artificially modifying the body was a worldwide taboo. Especially when using foreign objects from monsters or unknown species.

Being marked as a non-human and a criminal wasn’t the gist of it.

Once announced as non-human, others would have the right to experiment on them however they see fit.

This led to there being a new force altogether to capture artificial non-humans. To sell them for a fortune, a business worth considering for many.

They were called the [Dismantler].

Still, even they hesitated to step foot in the area governed by [The Pandemonium]. As it wouldn’t be just death that awaits after being found out.

They would be treated as an experimental subject too.

Overall, Zick was taking a huge risk - nevertheless, a familiar choice. He modified his body many times before regression, however he could still never get rid of the poison eating away at his mana veins.

"...We can’t use any sedative other than anesthesia, as your cooperation is needed as I operate. Are you ready?" Dr. Brawn asked with a frown.

"Start the operation." Zick answered back firmly, he needed to be awake to respond to any dangerous situation any way.

Dr. Brawn nodded and moved away from Zick’s slightly blurry vision. The numb feeling was quickly spreading across his body.

Already aware of what he needed to do, Zick activated - [Mana magnetism] immediately. Specifically aimed at his heart. Within a minute, even the mana present in his body was pulled towards his heart.

’It’s been a while since I used this skill to its fullest...’

Measuring the load his heart could take, the mana gathered and was compressed precisely.

A mechanical hand extended from the ceiling, with a huge metallic syringe loaded on it.

The operation room was lacking compared to the top hospital, but it had everything that was needed. Focusing on functionality instead of appearance.

Zeeing~

The mechanical arm stopped above Zick’s chest, the thick syringe aiming at his heart. The silverish-grey blood was visible in it.

According to Dr. Brawn, there was no need to process this blood into a mana crystal, before using it.

There was a better, a more natural process to make use of it.

Zick recalled Dr. Brawn’s words, as he watched the syringe slowly plunging into his heart.

{"The blood of Genoz-type species can be considered the purest form of mana, having the infinite possibilities to become anything. Just like organic substances, this blood can also assimilate mana. Let it assimilate your talent [Mana magnetism] - and make it a part of your body."}

As the syringe entered his body, Zick didn’t feel any sharp pain. He however could still feel the cold substance injected directly into his heart.

Instantly as if attracted to something, the foreign blood moved towards the center of the mana vortex that Zick made.

Similar to the mana, the silverish blood started to get compressed and turned into a plain orb.

Watching the whole process through the monitor, Dr. Brown quietly picked up the mike.

"The mana crystal is going to form soon, use the element to finish its main foundation."

The words spoken through the speaker didn’t register in Zick’s mind though.

Without any sign, his body started to spasm. All the nerves around his body turned red and his eyes bloodshot with gloom. His hands tightly held the operation table, crackling sound resounding throughout the room.

’My body is rejecting it...? No, that isn’t good....’

Zick did his best not to break his focus, if he messed up even a little control over his talent [Mana magnetism] at this critical time, the outcome was unknown.

Pushing away the shock from his mind, Zick’s mind started to run at full speed.

Having gone through many body modifications, Zick had never come across anything that his body rejected. This made him consider his body to be very compatible with foreign substance.

A situation like this never happened.

Gritting his teeth, Zick’s eyes shone, his concentration was divided into multiple places - causing his mind to go blank sometimes.

"Inject dragon blood into my heart...Blend a few chunks of dragon heart into it too!" Zick spoke while gritting his teeth.

Dr. Brawn’s face was dark for a second, thinking of his experiment failing.

His body jolted up hearing Zick’s words.

"He came to get dragon parts....so he must be aware of his compatibility..." He kept muttering while moving quickly.

Time ticked by as Zick tried to control his spasming body.

’Stay calm....calm....calm...’

Body rejection wasn’t his only problem, it would be a disaster if even his mindless Seizure started at this time.

Zick’s eyes began to turn hazy as the seconds ticked by. His body was starting to collapse internally and at a rapid rate.

Bang!

At that moment, the door to the operation room was flung open.

Footsteps echoed in Zick’s ear, signaling his mind to gather all its attention.

Dr. Brawn ran into the room with a tube of more silverish-grey blood and a container with a dragon heart.

He stood beside Zick and scanned his body instantly with mana.

"....Use the element you want and leave it to me." Taking out a golden heart, looking special at first sight - Dr. Brawn turned it into a mush with his mana.

Zick quickly communicated with the system as his consciousness drifted away.

[2,000 destiny points have been deducted. A strand of reality element has been ejected into the host’s heart.]

System’s notification was the last thing Zick heard before his mind drifted away.

.....

After an unknown amount of time,

Zick’s mind floated in a dark space. Groggy and tired, Zick felt as if a heavy object was placed on his body.

As if a ripple spread through the dark space, a light pierced through it.

Ugh!

Zick covered his eyes from the sun rays entering through the window.

’Morning...?’ Seeing the sun rising from the horizon, Zick felt slightly gloomy.

"Oh, don’t worry, only half a day has passed. If not, I would have already moved you away to my base."

Dr. Brawn appeared in Zick’s vision, checking his condition blankly.

"That’s good..." Zick got up, feeling energy flowing through his body.

Especially his heart, Zick felt as if there was an unlimited amount of energy in it.

"...The power you used at the end..." Dr. Brawn looked at Zick seriously for the first time.

"You mean the reality element?" Zick answered while moving around his sore muscles.

"No. The power you used to summon it....which [Fetcher] did you sign a contract with?"

[Fetcher]...?

It was a word Zick never heard before. Strangely enough...it felt as if he was forgetting something.

Observing Zick’s confused eyes, Dr. Brawn closed his eyes slightly.

"Here is the report, there is everything you need to know about in it....Reality element is an apex-grade element, a very good choice." Dr. Brawn left the room not wanting to continue chatting.

’...As I thought, he is most likely a foreign being too. As for this [Fetcher]...System, tell me your relation with it.’ Zick got up and changed his clothes swiftly, while communicating with the system.

[....]

’Silence? A new response. I’m getting an idea on what this system might be....’ Zick took the report and left the hospital, lost in thought.

Though he felt immense curiosity towards this [Fetcher]. He knew that overthinking was detrimental, so he focused on reality more.

His mind didn’t change, he wanted to destroy Ethereal before discovering more about his system.

There were dozens of unread notifications in the system.

[The host has obtained the [Magic heart (modified)]. You have acquired [reality] elements and [unknown] elements.]

’Unknown element? Did it come from the dragon heart Dr. Brawn used on me?’

Zick contemplated while driving the bike.

[You have acquired a new talent - [Assimilation (SS)].]

[Assimilation: Has the power to fuse any organic or inorganic substance. With the help of [Magic heart (modified)] it has the power to absorb any element.]

[You have obtained a racial trait - [Dragon heart(modified)].]

[Dragon heart (modified): If activated - the wielder will be granted bonus [dragon eyes] and [dragon scale] temporarily for 10 minutes. It can be strengthened by absorbing dragons’ bodies.]

Zick felt heat rise into his chest, reading through the notification.

’An SS-rank talent...It is pretty much a legend throughout the world. And now, I have it in my hands.’ Zick clenched the bike’s accelerator.

’As for absorbing dragons...seems like a costly maneuver.’

Buying anything related to dragons was priced quite high, far from Zick’s reach.

Still, it brought unprecedented excitement to him. Just thinking he moved a step forward towards destroying Ethereal made Zick ecstatic.

[The host has gained: [Strength: +10] [Stamina: +10] [Dexterity: +2] [Mana: +15].]

[Dr. Brawn??? Consider you as a friend, favourability: +10. You have obtained 2,000 destiny points.]

Reaching the end of the system notification, Zick decided to take a look at his overall status, while entering the academy’s front gate.

[Name: Zick Dejlin

Destiny points: 2,930

Destiny rank: very rare (original: mediocre)

Innate talent: [Luck overflow (EX)] [Assimilation (SS)] [Sword aura (S)] [Disguise (A)]

Acquired talent: [Magic heart] [dragon heart].]

Seeing the [Mana magnetism] to have vanished, Zick wasn’t surprised and nodded with satisfaction instead.

’Now, I can walk in the underworld without any worry.’ Zick’s mind brewed wicked ideas.

More than anything...He has acquired the card needed to win Ellen over.
