Demon Hunter and His Cabin
Chapter 354 - Chapter 354 Chapter 354 Candy House

Chapter 354: Chapter 354 Candy House Chapter 354: Chapter 354 Candy House Deep into the night, the whole town was eerily quiet.

John was pushing a wooden cart, which he thought securely tied up Roger, then circumnavigated the deserted streets by a large detour, urged on by the woman’s voice, leaving the town.

Some dim streetlights still lit the main street of the town, but upon leaving the town for the forest, everything became pitch-black and silent.

Distant wolf howls reached their ears, causing John to shiver uncontrollably several times, almost tipping the cart and dropping Roger off.

Rodger lay on the cart, bound by hemp ropes and the journey was everything but comfortable for him; the wooden planks pressed against his bones, and he had to endure John’s terrible driving skills.

“Are we there yet? Why haven’t we arrived?”

The woman beside him had already lost her soul from the scare a while back. Now, glancing toward the woods, she felt as though some monster lurked in the darkness.

“Soon, we should be there soon!”

The man took out a pebble from his pocket and tossed it onto the ground.

Under the moonlight, the pebble emitted a pale glow, as if stirring some unknown energy. Something in the dark forest responded to the pebble on the ground, blinking in and out of view.

John pushed the cart to where the twinkling lights were, and there lay another pebble, just like the one he had thrown.

The woman turned her head to look in the direction from which they had come.

The original glow had vanished.

John reached out and touched the pebble on the ground, the light disappeared, and then the faint glow appeared again in the distance.

In this repeat process, they pushed the cart deeper into the woods.

The large trees everywhere blotted out the sky, and they could no longer discern any sense of direction.

Bits of moonlight, filtering through the sparse gaps, fell upon their faces, casting both of their visages into ghastly paleness amidst the darkness.

They didn’t even dare to look at each other, only whispering, “Soon, we should be there soon. Once we hand over this man, we will get a pile of jewels.”

“We’ll never have to live this hard life again.”

Walking along, the woman suddenly stopped, trembling as she pointed in a direction shrouded in darkness.

“Do you hear that? Is there some sound coming from over there?”

“What sound?”

John’s face darkened as he held his breath to listen.

But after a while, nothing happened.

John, infuriated, raised his hand and slapped the woman’s face.

“Damn it, do you even know what you’re saying?”

“Are you trying to scare me to death?”

“Ah.”

The woman screamed, “Don’t hit me, don’t hit me. Listen, there really is some sound, it sounds like two children laughing!”

“Giggle, giggle…”

“Come catch me.”

“Catch me and I’ll give you candy.”

John felt chills, and cold sweat flowed down his face all at once.

“Hallucinations, these must be hallucinations.”

“It’s that woman urging us on, we’ve broken our oath, she must be angry now.”

“Hurry, hurry, or she might just come directly to us!”

John exerted all his strength, pushing the cart forward with difficulty.

Roger squinted at the moonlight piercing through the trees, pondering whether to stand up and help John with the load on the cart.

Forget it, Roger thought for a moment and then gave up the idea.

“Dear, do you think it might be Jenny?”

“Her ghost has come for us.”

“Shut up!”

John growled, “What does that stupid child know?”

“So stupid and ugly, because of her, we were the laughingstock of the entire town. If it wasn’t for the promise to that woman, I wouldn’t have minded if the child was eaten by wild beasts.”

“We might as well have another.”

“To have a beautiful, smart boy.”

John yearned.

“Once we have money, we’ll move into a big house right away, you won’t have to work, and I’ll hire lots of servants. You’ll just need to attend parties every day, and then take care of our children.”

A happy glow flickered in John’s eyes.

“What about you, dear?”

The woman’s face changed slightly, “You can’t become like those squires in town.”

“Don’t I already know what you group of men are up to?”

“Waiting until I’m pregnant, so you have the chance to mess around with those pretty maids!”

The woman sneered, “You won’t succeed. If you dare betray me, I’ll tie you up and hand you over to that woman!”

John’s expression turned somewhat unnatural, but in the darkness, his wife apparently didn’t notice.

“What are you worried about? To make you happy, I can even do without my own child.”

As they drew closer, the distant sounds gradually became clearer, and besides the vague sounds of frolic, faint singing was drifting over.

“One two three four five.”

“Dance with your eyes covered.”

“Candy hop hop hop…”

“The child picking candy has their head roll away.”

Parting the branches in front of them, they seemed to enter another world.

In the middle of an open woodland stood a small cottage made of candy, with bread as its roof, a chimney painted with chocolate, and even the wisps of smoke spiraling out carried a subtle sweetness.

In front of the house, many delicate toys were laid out, and a group of children in fancy clothes were holding hands and playing games together.

When hungry, they’d just lower their heads to bite off a piece from the wooden horses they rode, the soft bread melting in their mouths, and the scent of wheat detectable from a great distance.

There was also a table laden with a sumptuous feast in front of the door.

Desserts, roast chicken, smoked meat, sausages, cheese, big cups of milk, and many more delicious foods never before seen.

John couldn’t help but swallow, having been busy all day and not eating anything when he got home; both he and his wife were already starving and thirsty.

The children seemed oblivious to the presence of the three, continuing to play on their own.

John mustered his courage and took a step forward, “Miss Greta, are you there?”

“I’ve come as agreed, bringing a person…”

John wrung his hands, looking uneasy, “I apologize, Miss, on the way here with my daughter, that dead child ran off on her own and was eaten by a brown bear.”

“Please don’t worry, even though the child is gone, I’ve still brought you a replacement.”

As he spoke, he frantically signaled his wife with his eyes.

The woman struggled to push the wooden cart forward a bit.

“Put the person there.”

A voice came from inside the house.

“You’ve come a long way, are you hungry by any chance?”

“There’s food on the table, if you don’t mind, you’re welcome to help yourselves.”

A hint of surprise flashed in John’s eyes.

“Praise be to you, generous Miss Greta.”

He called out and rushed to the table with his wife, not even bothering to choose, just grabbing the food and stuffing it into his mouth.

As a countryman like him, who knew nothing of dining etiquette, it was good enough if he could just fill his stomach.

Squeak.

The door made of cheese was pushed open, and an old woman in a gray robe walked out from the house.

“How is it? My cooking skills are not bad, are they?”

“This is absolutely delicious.”

John, not looking up and with his mouth full of food, said heartily.

“Oh…”

The old woman showed a satisfied smile.

“Do you know what my food is made of?”
