Chapter 353: Chapter 353: Someone is Knocking at the Door Chapter 353: Chapter 353: Someone is Knocking at the Door “This couple…”

Roger’s heart filled with intense suspicion, but quickly he thought of the sadness and panic that had shown on the man’s face in the woods.

“Could it really be as he said?”

“Today is the child’s birthday, the mother made new clothes for the child, and the family was ready to celebrate properly.”

“But now…”

The room had very little furniture and it looked as though the couple was living a life of poverty. Roger aimlessly walked over to the dining area.

There was actually a feast laid out on the table, with several white candles burning at the corner of the table, which under the flickering candlelight, made the food look even more delicious and abundant.

With a slight frown, Roger’s pupils suddenly constricted.

There were only two sets of tableware on the table.

“The woman knew the child would never come back.”

Roger seemed to understand something, “The hardship of life made this couple give up their own child, so they chose to have the father take the child to the forest to abandon.”

“Let her fend for herself.”

Roger felt a shiver.

A betrayal from one’s kin.

Although he had saved the man’s life, thinking about it now, if he had known it would come to this, he would have rather stayed out of it.

Thinking of the man’s grief in the woods, Roger sighed again.

“After all, it’s their own child, perhaps there’s still some reluctance.”

But just then, through a wooden door and a wall, the conversation between the two was still clearly audible to Roger.

“What’s going on?”

“Why did you bring a man back, who is he?” the woman lowered her voice.

“Where’s Jenny? Where did Jenny go?”

There was a hint of panic in her voice.

John sighed, “I don’t know, she might have realized something and ran off in the woods.”

“On the way chasing her I encountered a wild beast and was nearly killed by the creature, but this man saved me, and then with his help we found the brown bear’s den.”

“Thud.”

John threw something onto the table.

“Among a pile of torn flesh, I found this.”

“A rag doll?”

The woman shrieked, her voice abruptly pitching higher.

“She was eaten?”

“What do we do, what can we do now?”

“We promised that woman, we had to deliver the child to her.”

“Now the child is gone, she will surely take revenge on us!”

From fear, the woman’s voice was already somewhat distorted, and John had to step forward to cover her mouth.

“Quiet, do you want others to hear?”

“But what should we do?” the woman’s voice tinged with a hint of tears.

“There’s no other way, later on I’ll find a way to get this man drunk. We’ll tie him up, and tomorrow morning we’ll take him to the forest to hand over to that woman.”

“Will that work?” the woman hesitated.

“What else can we do? We just have to try.”

The two of them whispered softly to each other, unaware that their conversation had been fully overheard by Roger.

It wasn’t that Roger was intentionally eavesdropping; instead, his perception was far above that of ordinary people. In a house with this kind of sound insulation, what John and the woman thought was a surreptitious whisper was almost the same as if they were speaking directly into Roger’s ear.

“Fairy tales are all lies, after all.”

Shaking his head with resignation, Roger contemplated whether to take action then and there.

Just then, the woman’s pained crying came from the room, growing louder and louder, so much so that not just Roger, but even the neighbors around should have been able to hear it clearly.

It took quite a while before John came out of the room with his eyes red and swollen.

“She’s too heartbroken. Jenny was always closer to her. It’s all my fault; I’m the one who killed her.”

To be fair, even with Roger’s observational skills at that moment, he couldn’t see too many flaws in John’s expression.

As an actor, the man before him was truly born at the wrong time.

John sat on the chair, heartbroken, and grabbed the glass of wine from the table, downing it in one go.

Understanding John’s thoughts at the moment, Roger had no desire to pretend with this man right here.

Once the Axis Dharma Seal was activated and John’s spirit was bewitched, Roger feigned drunkenness and collapsed onto the bed.

They were just an ordinary couple, but that “she” mentioned in their conversation might be the core of this story.

Roger was a bit puzzled in his heart; things were going too smoothly, which made him doubt the Mountain Woman’s speculation.

“Could it be that the creature hiding in the forest is extremely powerful?”

Roger lay on the bed, silently pondering.

Meanwhile, John and his wife, completely fooled by Roger’s spiritual bewitchment, were secretly hiding in the room, discussing.

“Let’s not sleep tonight, and when it’s the second half of the night, we’ll quietly push the cart and take this man to the edge of the forest to wait.”

“Then as soon as it gets light, we’ll take this man straight to her,” John said, calculating.

“Will she fulfill our wishes?” the woman muttered in a low voice.

“She will, she definitely will,” John also had no guarantees, but could only whisper comforting words.

“Have you forgotten the treasures we saw there last time? Just getting one or two of them would make us rich!”

Time ticked away, and soon it was near midnight. John and his wife were packing their things, and just as John was about to lift Roger…

There came a knocking sound in the silent room.

“Thump thump thump!”

The sound was somewhat deep, as if someone was knocking forcefully.

The couple glanced at each other, both seeing the panic in each other’s eyes.

“Thump thump thump!”

The knocking came again.

“Who, who’s there?” John asked, trying to sound brave.

The answer to his question was the same dull knocking sound.

The noise sounded as if someone were using their head to hit the door.

And the location of the knocks was very low.

“Who the hell is it?!” John’s eyes glinted fiercely as he pulled out the iron axe used for chopping wood, and asked menacingly.

“Mommy…”

“I’m cold.”

A faint voice came from outside the door.

“This voice, this voice is… Jenny!” the woman’s lips trembled, her face turning pale as if she might faint at any moment.

“Didn’t you say she was eaten by a wild animal?”

“How could she be here?”

“How should I know?!”

John was also about to lose his mind. The banging on the door became more frequent. Even if someone was using their head to knock on the door, the position from which the sound came was too low.

It was as if the head had fallen on the ground.

No longer able to contain the fear in his heart, John strode forward and yanked the door open. Without looking at what was in the darkness, he swung the iron axe with all his might.

Whoosh!

John’s full-force attack hit nothing but air.

In the night breeze, he felt something brush past his legs, rolling into the room with a rumble.

His bladder relaxed, and John nearly wet himself on the spot. Shivering, he turned around only to see his wife’s ashen face in the dim room.

There was no decapitated head as he had imagined; everything just now seemed to have been an illusion.

“It’s her, it must be her!”

“She’s reminding us, hurry, we need to leave immediately!”
