Chapter 65: Commotion At The Station!
Chapter 65: Commotion At The Station!
"Here! That’s what you asked for! Now let’s not see each other unless you’re ready to come back and settle your marriage." She announced, throwing a bunch of stacked files together.
"You’re late." Brooke snarled at her.
Serena scoffed and helped herself to a seat at the table, she looked at her daughter from head to toe and couldn’t help scoffing. Brooke was dressed so poorly, that she wondered where she got the gall to glare at her own mother.
"Humph! I was out making photocopies. My husband would get suspicious if he came home and didn’t see the documents he kept in the safe." She explained.
Brooke took one of the documents, and glossed through it, after she finished assessing it, she signalled her driver to pack up the rest.
"Brooke, you stupid girl, come home already. Have you finally ran mad? What would you need a copy of these for?" Serena questioned, not able to draw a connection.
"Home? What home? The place where no one cared for me?" She scoffed, then stretched out her hand, and rolled up her sleeves, to reveal a scar.
"This is from when I got stitched up at home after Ethan..." she couldn’t bring herself to finish what she was saying, the memory piercing deep.
Serena remembered that wound in particular, after all she was there when a doctor was called in to stitch her daughter up at home. Ethan had just lost a major deal and was angry about it. Unfortunately, the first person he laid eyes on, was Brooke, struggling to get to the kitchen.
"I begged you that day to help me escape that house, I cried and pleaded with my mother to save me. But you, you only cared that Cassie was going shopping the next day and taking you with." Brooke hardened her tone, as she reminisced some of her most painful memories.
Serena reached out, and placed her hand over her daughter’s, her gaze softened. "Brooke, you have to understand, you’re making a sacrifice for the family. And Ethan loves you dearly, even now he’s going crazy without you. It’s just he gets angry sometimes, and as his wife, you have to learn how to..."
Brooke withdrew her hand. Her voice turned cold and listless, "That’s enough. I’ll call you if I need something else."
Serena frowned as she watched her daughter wheel away with the stranger who didn’t even say a word the entire conversation.
"Brooke you bitch! Who will see you again?! This is the last time! Unless you come back home, I’ll never answer." She raised her voice, trying to cause a scene, but the employees at the small cafe didn’t pay her a second of their time.
"That brat!" Serena groaned, "Where does she get off speaking to me like that? Why are all my daughters so useless?" As she held that thought, her phone rang.
"Who is calling me now?" She complained, picking it up from the table. As soon as she answered, Cassie’s panicked voice came out the phone.
"Mom! It’s dad! He’s just been arrested!" Cassie cried into the phone.
Serena’s got up, "What?! My husband was what?!" She gathered her things and dashed out of the coffee shop, then headed for Cassie’s black car parked nearby.
"Driver! Quickly! Take me to the police station! Now!" She yelled at him, slapping his seat. The driver nodded and immediately started the engine. Serena rolled her windows down, to catch a whiff of fresh air.
The car drove past Brooke and her ’boyfriend’ who were walking on foot. And for a moment, as they drove past them, Serena could’ve sworn when her eyes locked with Brooke’s, the woman was...smiling?
A sadistic grin that sent shivers down her mother’s spine.
Serena couldn’t push out the eerie image from her mind, up until she arrived at the station, which was swamped with reporters. The driver led her through the crowd, until an officer took Serena with him to a smaller waiting room.
"Mom!" Cassie rose from her seat and ran into Serena’s arms, crying. "They arrested Dad! I don’t know why! Where happening here?!"
Serena hugged her tightly, "I don’t know, but everything will be fine. Have you called Ethan yet?"
At the mention of Ethan, Cassie pulled away furiously and glared harshly, "Don’t mention that bastard’s name!"
"What?" Serena’s heart ran a mile. "Why? You have to call him, or else your father will stay in jail. Just swallow your pride and get it over with! Your dad is fragile, he won’t last a day in prison!" She angrily shook Cassie’s shoulders, feeling it was not the time for her pettiness.
But Cassie let out an even louder cry. "Who do you think I called first? The second I heard the news I called that bastard. But do you want to know what he said?" she sniffled, as she recalled the conversation.
*Some minutes ago*
Shaking from head to toe, Cassie’s jittery fingers dialed Ethan’s number and placed a call through. After calling him twice, Ethan finally answered the phone.
"Why are you calling me?" He snapped at Cassie.
"Ethan it’s my father! He’s been arrested, you have to come help-"
"So?" Ethan cut her off.
Cassie widened her eyes, "Didn’t you hear me? The police took him away! You have to come down here!"
Ethan raised his voice, "And I asked so? What does that have to do with me? Your greedy father got what he deserved, so why do I have to get involved."
Hearing him speak so harshly made her cry even more, "But, he’s old and can’t handle prison."
"Listen here Cassie, your fucking sister finally got what she wanted and divorced me. So I’m pleased to inform you that I don’t have anything to do with your family anymore." He spat out.
"But the pregnancy. Our child-"
He cut her off, "My child is my business, you’re just carrying it. If you do anything foolish and cost me my heir, I’ll make sure to tear your fucking career apart." With that sound warning, he disconnected the call.
*Present*
Hearing everything, Serena fell to her knees and broke down crying.
"Mother!" Cassie fell down next to her, "What do we do now?" She cried, but Serena was too heartbroken to even listen.
She recalled the smile on Brooke’s face, ’That bitch! I just know that’s she’s behind all this!’ she vengefully thought, balling her fingers into tight fists.
"Mom!" Cassie shook Serena, "What do we-" her voice was cut off by the sudden entrance of the police officer who led both Cassie and Serena into the room.
"What’s going on?" Cassie asked, as she noticed the sounds from outside had gotten even rowdier.
"The reporting party has just arrived." The officer announced.
Cassie and her mother exchanged swift glances with each other. Cassie got up first, she drew her tear lines down her cheeks to be more defined, then stormed out of the room.
Outside the station, she saw Sadie surrounded by reporters, taking pictures and asking her all sorts of questions. The scene of her lowly errand dog getting all that attention made her angry, she raised her hand and approached her.
"Sadie!" Cassie raised her voice, drawing attention to herself. She charged at Sadie, aiming at her face, but she was intercepted by a hand, grabbing her wrist.
"Who-"
"Don’t get ahead of yourself and make this too easy for me. I still want to watch you crumble." Brooke whispered loudly into her sister’s ear.
Cassie gasped when she turned her head to see the person holding her back was her sister?
"Brooke you-" her voice was swallowed by the influx of reporters who swarmed them both.
Brooke retracted her grip, and wiped her palm on her skirt.
Sadie flocked to Brooke’s side and hugged her, "Big sis, did you get hurt?!" She asked, cuddling up to Brooke.
Big sis? Cassie was enraged at the sight of her two playthings standing next to each other.
"I’m fine. A wench like her couldn’t harm me." Brooke spat out.
"Brooke?!" Serena’s voice called out, drawing everyone’s attention to her. "You bastard! How dare you imprison my husband!" Serena yelled, as she angrily charged towards Brooke.
However, Cassie flung herself in front of her mother, "Just play along." She whispered into Serena’s ear, then pretended to hold her back.
"Please mother! Don’t fight her! It isn’t worth it!" Cassie pleaded, crying crocodile tears.
Brooke and Sadie both rolled their eyes.
Serena pointed furiously at Brooke, "Why are you so obsessed with my family?! You tried to strangle my daughter and now you’re imprisoning my husband! Leave us all alone!" She begged, and broke down in tears.
Cassie turned to the reporters, making sure the cameras all got her good angles.
"This is too much Brooke! Please, if you keep doing these things I’ll press charges." She tried to scare her off, seeing as she was dressed in poor clothing, she figured Brooke would be scared of dragging the matter to court.
But Brooke stunned her shitless when she retorted boldly, "Then do it. I dare you to press charges against me, Cassie Crane. Let’s settle this in court!" She challenged, striking fear in both women’s hearts.
Without Luther and Ethan backing them up, what the hell could they do?!
All hope seemed almost lost, up until a black van pulled over at the station....
