Chapter 64: A Swollen Nose

When Luther arrived at the office, the first thing he did was to ask for Sadie to be called in, however he was shocked to learn that she hadn’t turned up at work yet.

At first Luther didn’t think much of it, "The shock must’ve been too overwhelming for her. Not to worry, I’ll give her another day or two to come to her senses and realize her mistakes."

He took out his phone in the meanwhile and tried calling the loan sharks he paid to ransack her house. But not one of them were answering their phones.

"That’s odd. I still haven’t given them the rest of the full payment, so why aren’t they picking up?" He dropped his phone and pinched his chin.

While contemplating whether or not to go see them in person, his thoughts were suddenly disrupted when his secretary came barging in!

"Sir! The police are outside!"

Luther got up, "What?! Why?!"

She shook her head, "We don’t know why, but right now they’ve gotten inside and are on their-" her voice trailed off when the door was pushed open, followed by the sharp footsteps of two officers.

"Luther Crane, a complaint has been filed against you for exploitation..."

At the mention of his name, Luther turned pale, "O-Officer! There must be some sort of mistake. What do you mean by this?"

The officer he interrupted went on, "We have a warrant to arrest you and bring you down with us to the station." He said, then hinted his partner to apprehend Luther.

"A warrant? Who filed a complaint?! Who dared to?!" Luther raised his voice.

"Come with us quietly to the station, or we’ll have to add resistance of arrest to your crimes." The officer announced, over Luther’s protests.

As Luther was escorted out of the building, his employees watched in awe, wondering to each other why their boss was being taken away.

Some of the cleaning staff even went as far as to take out their phones and live stream the whole thing.

In no less than an hour, the news of Luther Crane’s arrest was made public.

*Some hours earlier*

Brooke woke up and immediately went into the bathroom to have a bath. After which she changed into the clothes Hannah packed and started brushing her hair by the mirror.

The wheelchair made doing these things she considered a hassle much easier.

Aside her new found ease, Brooke was excited that she would get to go back home today.

Excited she would see Mr Grayson again.

’Ah! You idiot!’ she smacked herself in the head, she stole a glance at the clock hanging on the wall and let out a frustrated sigh.

"It’s only seven thirty." She dropped her shoulders, it was way too early for Mr Grayson to arrive to pick her up.

She looked over her shoulder at Sadie who had stretched her hands and legs out, getting very comfortable without Brooke on the bed.

She half smiled to see the young woman smiling carelessly in her sleep.

"I better whip us some breakfast." She thought aloud.

The kitchen was stocked with the groceries Thane had picked up, and the meatloaf was still left over too.

Brooke held the airtight sealed bowl of left over meatloaf and frowned. She recalled when Mr Grayson made it yesterday, and realized she didn’t want him cooking for Sadie.

No, she didn’t want anyone else for that matter to eat his cooking.

"Brooke you really are a piece of work." She sighed, shoving it back into the fridge. She took out the crate of eggs and wheeled around the kitchen for ingredients to make some pancakes.

She was in the middle of whisking when a thought suddenly crossed her mind.

"Wait a minute, won’t it be the driver picking me up?" She frowned, she figured that since Mr Grayson couldn’t send her back, he probably wasn’t going to be the one to pick her up.

Plus, it was still too early for either one to come pick her up. Yet she had dressed up and made a complete fool of herself.

*Ding*

*Dong*

A yawn from the living room stole her attention. Brooke dropped the bowl and wheeled herself out of the kitchen, only to see Sadie in nothing but shorts and her night bra heading for the door.

"Sadie wait a-"

But she was too late.

"Why the hell are you ringing the damn doorbell this fucking early?" Sadie cussed, half asleep, as she opened the door, to give her ’landlord’ an earful.

As soon as she opened the door, she realized her old house never even had a doorbell. And even if it did, it wouldn’t sound so damn expensive.

"Good morning." Thane’s calm voice greeted, snapping her fully awake.

Sadie straightened her back, and looked down at what she was wearing. Her cheeks flushed in embarrassment, and in a panic she slammed the door in his face and ran inside to change.

"That girl." Brooke sighed in defeat, pinching her temples. She wheeled herself over to the door, only to see Thane’s bright pink nose.

"Oh my." She gasped at the swelling. "Let’s get some ice on that." Brooke offered, gesturing him to come inside.

"Thank you," he said, stepping inside. Thane carefully looked around for Sadie, careful not to cross her and have another part of him assaulted. He sat on the sofa, and let out a deep breath, regulating the pain around his face.

"Here, please place it on the swelling." Brooke emerged from the kitchen with some ice cubes from the fridge.

He took the swiftly made ice pack and placed it over his nose. "Thanks." He managed to say.

"I’m sorry about her, she doesn’t mean any harm, she just tends to get very hysterical when she’s flustered." She said based off of her experience with working at the agency.

Thane nodded, although he didn’t really get why she would’ve gotten flustered in the first place.

Brooke couldn’t help but steak glances at Mr Grayson, she was certain that he wouldn’t come to pick her up. And even if he did it was still too early. The distance from his house to Sadie’s apartment was over an hour.

Just when did he start driving over here?

Thane took the ice pack off his nose, and sat up straight. "I emailed my lawyers the copy of the contract Sadie signed, and they assured me they’ll be able to get a warrant."

Brooke tensed up, "I wonder how Sadie will take this, it’s her career that’ll be affected the most-"

"And what about yours?" Thane chimed.

"Mine?" She pointed at herself, "I wasn’t an actress or anything when I worked at his agency."

"Yes, but you still worked at that agency, more than anything you’re on your way to starting your career now. You could ride this wave and clear up the misunderstanding Cassie created." He said, bringing up the incident of Brooke choking Cassie.

Thane went on, "If I’m going to predict what’ll happen next, Cassie is going to make a statement to try and clear her father’s name. When it’s revealed that Sadie made the complaint, she’ll try everything in her power to turn the public against Sadie. Just like with you, she’ll put on a good show for everyone."

The thought of the same thing happening to Sadie scared Brooke. "No, I can’t let that happen. If it means me having to step up and call that agency out, I’ll do it to protect Sadie."

"What?! No!" Sadie cried out, coming out from where she was hiding.

"Sadie..."

She crouched down in front of Brooke and held her hands. "I didn’t agree to take action against them just to drag you with me. You’re already living a good life, away from everything they put you through."

Brooke smiled gently at her, "Sadie this isn’t something I decided on a whim. I’ve been meaning to get back at them for a while. I would be foolish not to do something."

"But what can you do?" Sadie didn’t understand what Brooke planned to do. "Even if you come out and say something, it doesn’t mean anyone will believe you."

"I know that. That’s why I have a way to make them believe me." She announced.

Sadie furrowed her brows. "A way? What way?"

Just as Serena was about to leave for her club, she got a call from Brooke. Since Cassie was spending more time at home, she had to go outside to answer the call.

"Why are you calling me now? I’ve already sent you the clothes haven’t I?" Serena whispered loudly, looking behind her as she spoke.

’This brat. I hope she isn’t asking for money!’ Serena thought to herself.

"Meet me at the address I just sent you in thirty minutes." She ordered.

"What?! Hey listen here, you can’t just order me around-" she was saying, but Brooke cut her off.

"Do you want me to post that recording I have? What do you think Cassie or your husband will say?" She threatened.

Serena huffed, "Fine, I’m coming-"

"Oh, and I’ll need you to grab some things from the house on your way." Brooke sharply added.

Her mother sneered, "You’re already starving? You stupid daughter!"

Her smile however, swiftly turned into a panicked expression when she heard what Brooke wanted her to bring.
