Chapter 59: Kind Of Her Type
Chapter 59: Kind Of Her Type
Thane served Brooke, and then himself, while she in turn poured them both a glass of wine each to go with the meal.
"Cheers!" They brought their glasses together and made a toast, beaming with smiles. Brooke sipped from her glass, while stealing glances at Thane, who had his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
’How does someone look sexy while drinking wine?’ she mused to herself, ogling over him.
She dropped the glass and picked up a spoon, she stared at the high table and realized something.
’So far, he’s taken me to places I don’t need to move a lot.’ she thought, considering how considerate he was being, by trying to make her have a good time without stressing over her leg.
’He’s a good man. The woman who marries him will be lucky.’ At that thought, Thane’s proposal played on her mind, and it made her cheeks flush.
’No! No! Don’t get presumptuous! This is just an arrangement, it’s for revenge. Nothing good will come out of thinking that way.’ she told herself, while stealing more glances at him.
’But, he is kind of my type, kind...daring...considerate...’ she couldn’t help but think, as she churned her bowl with a spoon.
"What’s wrong? Is the food not to your liking " Thane asked, when he noticed she hadn’t touched a morsel of food.
Brooke shook her head. "No, I was just waiting for it to cool down a bit-" she was saying, but got cut off by her phone ringing.
"Sorry, I thought I placed it on silent." She picked it up from the table, wondering who would even call her? "I’ll just switch it off."
"It’s fine, you can answer it."
However she felt bad, considering Thane had put his phone away the entire date and had been focused on her. "But it’s rude to-"
He replied gently. "It’s fine, we have the whole day together, one phone call isn’t an issue."
"Thank you." She said, and quickly answered the call. Barely had she answered, than she heard crying over the phone!
"Brooke, please I need your help." Sadie cried into the phone.
"Sadie?! What’s wrong?" Brooke spat out in a panic, she could hear the sound of something breaking in the background, and loud grunts.
But Sadie could stop crying into the phone, which made Brooke’s heart sink. "Sadie can you tell me where you are? What’s going on? Please talk to me." She begged over the phone.
Sadie whispered, "I don’t know why, they all just came back...and they’re trashing the house. I’m in my closet, but they’ll find me-"
Brooke nodded, ’She’s at home.’ she had only been to Sadie’s place twice to send her food and medicine when she had fallen sick from overworking.
"Don’t worry, I’m on my way. Just stay put and be as quiet as possible. Find something in there to defend yourself with, I’ll be right there." She announced, her tone reassuring.
Sadie whispered, "Thank you." Then disconnected the call.
"Mr Grayson I’m sorry but-"
"I’m already calling the police. Do you have the address?" Thane asked, holding his phone to his ear.
Brooke nodded eagerly, reaching for her wheelchair, "Yes it’s..."
By the time they arrived at the scene, the police had already arrived and arrested the men who were trashing Sadie’s house, and Sadie was just done speaking to the officer handling the arrest.
"Sadie!" Brooke called out to her, once her wheelchair touched the ground.
Sadie rushed over to her and lowered herself to hug Brooke. "Thank you so much, I was so scared." She whispered into her ear.
"It’s okay now, you’re safe." Brooke patted her shoulders, trying to calm her down. Whilst Thane went ahead to speak to the officer.
Once Sadie was calm, Brooke asked her, "What happened here? Who were the people that ransacked your house?" Outside Sadie’s house, she saw her bed was thrown out, alongside her fridge and other kitchen appliances.
Her neighbours watched from their windows, no one dating to step out.
Sadie let out a sigh and confessed, "They were loan sharks."
"Loan sharks? But why would they come here?" She asked. For all the years she spent working at the agency, Brooke was unaware that Sadie owed loan sharks any money.
She thought the company paid her well enough, despite Cassie’s insufferable behavior.
"I don’t know, president Crane told me he had already paid off my debt, so I don’t understand why they’d come here." She replied.
Brooke narrowed her eyes, ’Luther paid her debt? Why would that money pincher do that?’ she didn’t know why, but she could smell a scheme unfolding.
"Come with me," Brooke reached for her wrist, "And tell me every single thing that happened." She insisted, then led her to the car so they could speak in private.
Inside, Sadie ended up confessing everything to Brooke, about her brother running away, the loan sharks and her deal with Luther. She told her about how Luther exploited her in secret, about Cassie’s harassment and even about the money Luther claimed she still owed him.
After hearing everything, the one thing that came to Brooke’s mind was, "That bastard is exploiting you Sadie!"
Sadie gasped, "B-But he’s keeping the news under wraps, and he saved me from the debt."
Brooke shook her head. "No. What he’s doing is illegal, and it’s not okay. We have to report him to the police."
Sadie panicked, "What? No! I can’t do that. If the loan shark thing comes up, my career will be ruined! No one will ever hire me." she receited what Luther had drilled into her head.
But Brooke held her hand and looked into her eyes. "That is not true, you are a talented actress, one little scandal can’t cover up your talent."
She sniffled, "B-But how can someone like me ever fight against president Crane? I don’t have the power to do that..."
"Then let me do it! I’ll drag that bastard’s ass to the station myself if I need to and tear down his agency!" she declared, her anger clearly seeping out of her eyes.
