Chapter 331: Book Knight 136

The library before Fisher was both spacious and full of charm as he walked along the rows of bookshelves towards the center, beneath the huge crystal glass dome where the moonlight shone upon him, allowing him to look down and see a revised map of Nali.

"There are way too many books here, there are only a few scrolls that document hundreds of years of history in our tribe..."

Xiayat looked around at the densely packed books and their categorization on the shelves. The first floor of the library was the tallest, probably about six or seven meters high, and the large bookshelves around it were divided by category with the books neatly arranged. The second and third floors housed other categories of books.

Most of the books here were original copies, like the academic books Fisher had read during his university time in the Royal College library. Many of the books had clearly visible repair traces, having been roughly treated by Schwali invaders during the times of war.

"The amount of books here is far from one-fifth that of the Royal library before ’Gedelin’s shame.’ A part of them have been hoarded by people domestically and internationally and have yet to be returned. A larger portion was burned in the flames... like the ’Magic Encyclopedia of Nali,’ which Mr. Helsen devoted his life to revising, had actually been revised once during the reign of Gedelin II, was also lost in that great chaos."

"Is the Magic Encyclopedia really that important? I see your Magic Association creating new magic every year, and the magic created in recent years has already caught up with the number recorded in those Magi Encyclopedias, hasn’t it?"

Anna, with her arms folded, followed Fisher and looked around at the bookshelves, voicing her doubt.

Although she was from the South Continent, she had lived in Nali for quite some time and understood many things here much better than those two clueless demi-human ladies.

Fisher nodded noncommittally but still said to Moli behind him,

"Magic doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. Besides those who have created brand new Ring Heads and brought forth entirely new magical concepts, most mages are merely groping on the shoulders of giants. The new magic we design is largely either anomalous patchwork creations or simply further modifications along the existing paths of magic..."

"But innovating an entirely new magic concept is a high-risk step. If the design goes wrong, you could be blown half to pieces by the magic in an instant, swept into an unknown space by the world, turned into a desiccated corpse, or even driven mad..."

Fisher’s words made the ladies shiver a bit. They didn’t understand the essence of magic very well and thought these things worked like the magic in stories and myths where a simple handwave would suffice, ignoring that magic itself was actually a scholarly edifice built upon theory.

Once something is linked with theory, it becomes quite dry and boring, like mathematics.

Perhaps it was because the people of the Western Continent had accepted the essential concepts of magic early on that when physics, chemistry, and other natural sciences emerged, scholars readily delved into them without resistance and achieved respectable results within two hundred years.

"This is also why the ancient Magic Masters were so revered. They used their lives to stack up the possibilities of magical design. Behind every sloppily recorded magic in the Magic Encyclopedia could be the lives of hundreds of mages. Many magical engraving schools have gradually withered and perished, and their techniques and emblems did not survive. This is a loss for both Nali and the Magic Academic World..."

"Never mind, just got carried away. Let’s focus on finding the entrance to the treasury now."

Fisher saw a small lamp available for use at the side of the bookshelf. He picked it up and lit it, finally bringing a sliver of light to the dark library. He swept the "Magic Category Books" on the bookshelf with that light, then retracted his gaze without finding anything.

"It’s about two in the morning now. Let’s hurry up and look for anything unusual on the first floor."

"Hmm..."

Anna nodded her head and took off in another direction, Xiayat hesitated for a second and then turned to follow Anna, while Moli stayed with Fisher.

Blake had built these two buildings for the Gedelin Royal Family, arrogantly hiding his own treasury underneath as well. According to Fisher’s speculation, if there was an entrance to the treasury here, there could be two main ways to enter.

One would be purely physical mechanisms, such as pressing a button or entering a password in the Healing Room, which would then open the passage to the treasury.

But if that were the case, it would be too obvious, and moreover, Kachina had often come here to retrieve equipment and relics previously; she would have regularly used that entrance to access the treasury...

As for why Kachina could so easily enter the private grounds of the Royal Family beside Nali Lake?

Firstly, because Blake had the permission to enter freely, but that wasn’t the main reason... The most important was the Royal Family had within them Lunxis, who had colluded with Blake and others.
