Chapter 134: 51. Whale-man Species
Fisher ran fast, the figure who had climbed over the wall didn’t realize that someone was rapidly approaching from the dark wilderness behind him until he was about to climb down. Only then did he suddenly become aware of something swiftly closing in.
Turning his head, he saw a gentleman with a hand cane sprinting towards him from the darkness, the speed surpassing that of any human, quickly reaching the edge of the wall. This terrified him so much that he jumped straight off the wall.
Fisher didn’t hold back either, following his lead to leap onto the wall, and upon mounting it, he saw that the figure was frantically running toward the inside of the school.
No, this won’t do. Not knowing what this guy might be, if he gets to the student dorms it would be bad. What if he hurts the students?
So, without hesitation, Fisher gripped the hand cane backwards, hurling it like a spear towards the figure. The figure seemed to react the instant the hand cane flew out, quickly dodging and watching it embed into the ground before him like an arrow.
"Uh..."
A faint moan came from the figure, seemingly in a state of panic. Seeing his path blocked by the hand cane, he turned and ran in another direction.
Many students were still out on the night of Saint Nali University, but most gathered at the library and lecture halls in the center of the school, or the dormitories far away. Here, however, towards the direction of the faculty offices and the gymnasium, it was deserted late at night, and not even the security guards had patrolled here yet.
Watching as he turned toward another direction—the gymnasium opposite the faculty offices—Fisher quickly followed suit. Disregarding the cane embedded in the ground, he continued his relentless chase behind the figure.
The figure’s running pace was oddly fast, but their running stance was strange, appearing comically hopping and bouncing in the darkness. Now closer, Fisher could make out a large tail dangling beside the legs of the cloak-covered shadow ahead.
Is this guy a demi-human?
Before he could ponder further, the figure suddenly leapt powerfully into the side of a giant building. Fisher looked up to see that he had jumped into the university’s gymnasium.
Fisher frowned and, with two steps, climbed over the gymnasium’s outer wall and into the building.
The place he entered was an incredibly spacious sports court. To prevent balls from easily hitting the ceiling during games, the ceilings were built high. It was the same here, but now with no lights on, it was dark, and the sound of Fisher’s landing traveled far.
But there was no sound of the figure landing.
In the darkness, Fisher suddenly couldn’t locate the figure’s position.
He began to regret not retrieving the hand cane from the ground; the cane had illumination magic that could light up the pitch-black court.
Fisher observed his surroundings warily, but saw only darkness. Aside from the sound of his own footsteps on the floor, there was only the sound of water from the swimming pool connected to the gymnasium. The gymnasium’s windows hadn’t been fully closed at night, so the arrogant night wind poured in, stirring the water in the pool to its edges.
Fisher surveyed the surroundings while walking toward the sound of water.
At the edge of the court, the door connecting to the swimming pool was ajar, and Fisher easily pushed it open and entered. A distinctive disinfectant smell of the swimming pool hit him in the face. This area was small, and he still didn’t spot the figure.
A window was left open. Fisher walked over to it and studied the surface under the moonlight but saw no signs of footprints, meaning the person hadn’t left this way.
Could the figure have just vanished?
Fisher turned back to look at the black, wind-blown swimming pool that didn’t cease to be disturbed by the night wind. He walked up to the edge of the pool, silently gazing into what seemed like depths unfathomable.
He watched quietly, all the while carefully listening for any kind of sound—any slight footsteps that might be caught...
But apart from the sound of water, there was no other noise.
Fisher stared intently at the water, lingering by the pool for dozens of minutes. He feared the person might be hiding in the water, but he dared not dive in. He knew nothing about the conditions inside, and Fisher wasn’t proficient in water combat; a misstep would not be fun.
Dozens of minutes should have been the limit for a demi-human or human to dive, but the pool remained still, as silent as death, without a sound.
Could that figure have already escaped?
But the question was, how did he manage it?
From the moment he entered the field until he finally entered the swimming hall, the front gate was closed, the only exits being two windows in the field and the swimming hall. He hadn’t heard any footsteps or sounds of someone going outside, and even if that person had jumped into the water, there should have been the sound of a splash.
But since he came in, Fisher hadn’t heard any sound at all.
Crouching by the pool, Fisher silently recalled the panicked noise that the figure had made when he hurled the Handcane at it. He always felt that the voice sounded somewhat familiar...
After a long while, Fisher seemed to have gained nothing as he walked back from the swimming hall to the field, then leapt out from the field.
With Fisher gone, the gym slowly succumbed to darkness again, leaving only the incessant sound of the swimming pool’s water.
In the quiet space, after an indeterminate amount of time, a head slowly emerged from the center of the pool. The head seemed to blend with the surface of the water, making no sound as it surfaced.
He carefully surveyed the quiet surroundings, seemingly confirming that the terrifying gentleman had left the area, then he slowly swam from the center of the pool to the edge and suddenly leaped out. Throughout this process, not even a surplus sound of water was made.
He had just leaped out of the water and then wrapped himself with his completely soaked cloak,
"Lord Ramasitia, please..."
In the darkness, a soft female voice arose, and the droplets covering her slowly began to shine. Then, as if coming to life, the droplets danced upon her skin. Soon after, the tail behind the girl began to slowly disappear, completely giving way to human legs, while the blue halo hidden under her cloak also faded away.
She looked around the quiet surroundings once more, then carefully climbed out through the window of the swimming hall, disappearing near the swimming hall, and ran toward the direction of the distant student dormitories.
After the girl had run far away, the gym was left with only darkness, the sound of the swimming hall’s water continued to beat against the pool walls. Unnoticed by the girl, in the neighboring field, a gentleman sat expressionless, perched on the wall linking the field with the swimming hall, his ear turned to the sounds that had just occurred.
In the darkness, he held a brightly colored book in his hands, none other than the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual.
The pages turned as if driven by madness, frantically flipping until it stopped just after the page for the "Demon Species." On the blank page that followed, golden text began to shimmer, leaving behind a new entry word.
"Whale-man Species"
"Please select a research subject, available subjects 0/2"
"Moli, Juvenile Whale Species"
Fisher’s gaze lingered on those floating, ethereal words for a long time.
Whale-man Species?
And there were still two subjects available?
That meant the "Mysterious Sea Child" mentioned in the Doomsday Prophecy was a Whale-man!
Suddenly getting news about a doomsday demi-human girl, Fisher felt a rush, like clouds parting to reveal the moonlight.
"Moli?"
He mulled over the name, and suddenly the image of a well-developed girl, always avoiding the gaze of others, bashful, appeared in his mind.
