Chapter 39: Stranded

The gang put themselves together after the fight and started heading to the motel to spend the night. Before they left, Jay and Zeke buried the lycan to prevent questions from the townspeople and their police. It was a long walk to the motel Jay had picked out, it was the only functioning one in the deserted town at the moment.

"Is everyone okay?" Josh asked.

"Yeah, we’re in over our heads with no way to get home. I think we’re doing just great" Jay responded, the sarcasm he implied was very obvious in his tone.

"Jayson. stop acting like this is his fault. You lost the talismans" Zeke voiced, moving ahead of them.

"You really want to do this now, Mr. Ezekiel the clown?" Jay raised his voice, holding Zeke by the shoulder.

"let go of me. Let go of me this instant" Zeke said in a passive aggressive tone.

"You boys always get along this well? I can’t say I’m not impressed" Lily stated, grinning as she walked beside Ronnie.

"You, don’t think we forgot. What was that back there?" Jay asked. The bunch halted.

"I don’t know what you speak of, Jayson" Lily responded, shrugging her shoulders.

"I’m talking about the fact that your boyfriend passed out and woke up all witchy. What he did to that lycan, it was brutal" Jay expressed.

"We’re having sympathy on the targets we were sent to neutralize now?" Ronnie asked, he kept a cold expression.

"I thought you couldn’t fight. Where did this sudden personality switch come from?" Jay questioned.

"Will you chill out?" Zeke asked.

"No you chill out, we’re dealing with things we can’t make any sense of here. We don’t need our teammates giving us more things to worry about" Jay snapped. everyone went silent following his outburst. They started to move again and he went ahead of all of them, storming off into the distant.

"This isn’t the impression of him I got the first time I met him. Is this what he’s really like?" Josh whispered to Zeke.

"Not really, Jay is a nice guy. He’s just a bit of a control freak sometimes. Also, he’s afraid. Jay is a numbers guy, uncertainty terrifies him. Forgive his behavior" Zeke expressed with a small smile.

"I see." Josh said, concluding the conversation. He then walked over to Ronnie.

"Ron. Are you—" He spoke before being interrupted by Ronnie.

"I’m fine. Why would you think I’m not?" Ronnie asked, peering a glance through Josh.

"I just— wanted to make sure" he replied.

Lily took a look at Josh, and took a sharp look at Ronnie.

"Ronald. We need to talk later. In private" she whispered. Ronnie responded with a silent nod, he didn’t spare her a look.

The gang had gotten to the motel. They booked two Rooms. The master and servant would occupy one while the rest of the boys were to occupy the other. They sat in the lobby to discuss their strategy at Jay’s request.

As they gathered, the youth cleared his throat, making sure to speak in a discreet manner so that the receptionist wouldn’t catch wind of their conversation.

"I’d like to apologize to you all. I was quite the dick tonight. I let my emotions get the better of me. It won’t repeat itself" he pledged.

There was silence, the rest of the gang only gave him forgiving glances and smiles.

"Let’s go over what we know so far." he said.

"Going off the file that Cynthia compiled for us, it said that this town had a lycanthrope problem, and our objective was to exterminate the entire pack and return by morning. As we know, there have been some new developments. The lycanthrope appears to be working with vampires. Worse, these are strong vampires" Jay explained.

"Why was it so shocking that they’re working together? these beasts." Lily questioned.

"Since we first encountered both species at the agency, it’s been known that they don’t mix. The records don’t state the deets but they hate each other, mortally" He responded.

"So, there is more at play here?" Lily asked.

"Apparently. It looks—"

"It looks like a set up" Ronnie interrupted.

they went quiet for a moment, before nodding in agreement. Zeke stroked his chin.

"It certainly looks that way. Somehow they knew that we had fresh recruits among us. I know they have good hearing but still. The timing and everything" he explained.

"I have a feeling they took our talismans. They shouldn’t even know what those do. Unless" Zeke said, and paused.

"Yes, unless they have had a run in with other agents in the past and this really is a set up." Jay concurred.

"What do we do? We need a way to contact base" Josh suggested.

"Does anybody’s cell have reception and battery? We can’t depend on communication talismans now since they’ve been taken" Jay said.

"Yeah I think mine should have a bit of battery left. I brought it along just in case. I doubt it’d have reception though" Josh said.

They deliberated on the best course of action to take. Meanwhile Ronnie remain quiet. Lily silently observed him.

"What was that feeling I got earlier? I feel like something is different with me, and it’s affecting him as a result" Lily pondered.

Before long, she stood up.

"Kindly excuse us. I’d like to have a word with my master" Lily said.

"Ronald, a word?" Lily asked.

Hesitantly, Ronald stood up and followed her.

Just as they were about leaving the door to exit the motel, a strange woman came through the door, making them step back. From her appearance and demeanor, they instantly knew what she was.

The receptionist collapsed as soon as she entered like she did something to him.

They took their stances immediately, they were already on high alert.

"Please settle down. Is this any way to treat a woman? I am merely here to talk" she smirked and took a sit on the table across from them.

"Be on alert" Jay echoed.

"I am here to make a proposition. My master would like audience with you people" she voiced calmly.

A shared look of confusion was drawn across their faces, except for Lily and Ronnie who appeared unphased.
