Chapter 38: Unknown variable

Two of the vampires showed up at Jay and Zeke’s position, attacking them. Josh froze in place, unable to react to the speed of their attacks.

Zeke was fast enough to keep up with one of the vampires, Jay who was a mage could only evade his attacker because there wasn’t time to chant a spell.

"Joshua, use a spell!" Jay yelled.

"I— i don’t know how" Josh responded in a mutter. He had been snapped back to focus by the sound of urgency in Jay’s voice.

"Do that thing you did before or something!" Jay added.

The only girl among them attacked Josh, attempting to pierce his heart with her fist. Josh’s eyes widened, a spark ignited around the vampire and burnt her back. She leapt back and hissed.

"Esmeralda, don’t tell me you let that hatchling get the best of you" one of the creatures attacking them jested with a grin on his face.

"Xander don’t fuck with me, this is not the time" she breathed heavily, preparing to attack Josh again.

Lily had leaped down to the foot of the cliff to find Ronnie who lay unconscious by a fallen tree.

"Ronald, are you okay?" She called out, resting his head in her arms. Ronnie said nothing, his breath was slow.

"Sleeping on duty. The chief will give you an earful when we get back" Lily said silently with a warm smile on her face.

"Lilith, a little help here?!" Jay yelled, his voice unsteady.

"I’m kind of busy at the moment" she replied.

"This is no time to get cozy with your lover! Help out" Zeke reprimanded.

"The boy is not my lover! Besides, it’s dangerous for me to use my powers when he’s not conscious" Lily responded.

"Well aren’t you a lively bunch" Xander, the vampire said. He smiled mischievously as he took advantage of the situation and tried to bite Zeke’s neck but he’s skin wouldn’t break. Zeke landed a blow on him that severed his lower jaw from his face almost completely. Xander held his mouth, he showed no sign of pain as the injury healed instantly right in front of Zeke.

"You lot are a troublesome bunch" Zeke said, landing a heavy kick on Xander’s jaw to further shatter it. Part of his head was crushed in the process.

"Stay down" Zeke mouthed as he kicked Xander’s limp body off the cliff and ran over to Jayson who was battling a lycan who had shown up without the notice of the others.

"You seem to be doing alright, need some help or no?" Zeke jested.

"Buy me time, a few seconds should be enough" Jay said and leaped back. the huge vampire tried to follow but Zeke blocked his path.

"Pick on someone your own size" He stated with a grin. Suddenly his body grew two times it’s original size. He tried to land a kick but the monster gripped his leg and threw him in the air. He leaped and pounded Zeke into the ground before he could react.

Meanwhile Jayson looked around for the weapons talisman but he had lost it along with the other talismans in the snow admist the battle.

"Shit," he muttered. Zeke winced as the monster repeatedly slammed his face into the snowy earth.

Josh was occupied, burning Esmeralda repeatedly with the only spell he knew to keep her from coming closer to him.

The lycan threw a weakened Zeke aside and set his sights on Jay. He growled as he slowly approached the mage. Just then, Lily leaped in the air, landing a kick heavy enough to split him into two halves at his side. He crashed down the cliff.

"About time you did something," Jay said, sighing in relief. Immediately, Lily attacked Esmeralda, ripping out her arms and punching her to the side. The vampire coughed blood on the white snow, staining it a dull red color. She screamed in agony. With Xander regenerating very slowly and Esmeralda neutralized, Josh let out a relieved sigh.

"Is Ron okay?" He asked with widened eyes like he just remembered that his friend was almost killed.

"Nothing seems to be broken, I checked." Lily responded sternly.

Jay headed over to heal Zeke who was still laying on the snow.

"You should bring him up here, I’ll check him and heal him if need be. By the way, not bad for your first time, Joshua. Good job" Jay remarked.

"Um, do lycans regenerate like vampires?" Josh questioned nervously.

"Ronald is down there" Lily stated, leaping down the cliff immediately. As Josh suspected, the monster had already regenerated and was heading towards Ronnie, but he was no longer unconscious.

Without saying a word, Ronnie put on the black gloves and stretched out the silver chain till it was as long as he wanted.

He gave Lily a look and she understood. Speedily, she attacked the lycan, taking our his legs and bringing him to his knees in front of Ronnie.

Ronnie wrapped the chains tightly around the monster’s neck. While the monster tried to resist, he placed his foot on the monster’s chest and pulled on the chain as hard as he could. The silver burnt through the lycan and his head rolled off. The blood sprayed out, spilling on both Ronnie’s face and the snow.

Josh and the other boys were both impressed and terrified by how Ronnie handled his werewolf problem.

"I’ve never seen those chains used in that manner before" Jay stated.

"You and me both" Zeke concurred.

Josh didn’t say a word, he looked bewildered. Lily had the same reaction on her face. She looked more puzzled than the rest.

"What’s wrong?" Ronnie asked, he wore an uninterested expression on his face.

"It’s— nothing" Lily replied, faking a small smile.

"You guys alright down there?" Jay yelled.

"We are fine. How about those guys?" Lily asked at the top of her voice.

Jay looked behind him and gasped.

"They’re— gone" He yelled.

Esmeralda and Xander who had fallen were nowhere to be found. Only the lycan next to Ronnie remained.

"Vampires and lycans, working together? It’s impossible." Zeke said, getting to his feet.

"It’s an unknown variable. We weren’t prepared for anything of this nature. We should return to HQ." He suggested.

"That won’t be possible immediately. I lost the talismans, all of them" Jay declared.

"Does this mean we can’t go home?" Josh asked.

"It means we’re fucked" Zeke responded, wearing a worried expression.
