Chapter 396 : An Unexpected Reunion (1)

Chapter 396: Chapter 396 : An Unexpected Reunion (1)

Xie Junjie cried out from shock when he felt a large hand pressing against his tiny back.

When he raised his head and saw that his mother’s eyes were open, he screamed again.

"AHHHHHHHH!!!"

The little dragon crawled away from his mother and pounced at his twin brother from behind.

Startled by the sudden attack, Zhang Mingrui whipped around and asked, "Junjie, wh..."

He had not even completed his sentence when he saw Xie Jianyu in a sitting position. The little tiger let out a blood-curdling scream as well.

"AHHHHHHHHH!!! AHHHHHHH!!!"

The two boys huddled together at the end of the bed and shivered from fear as they stared at Xie Jianyu.

"M-M-Mommy....?" Xie Junjie mumbled in fear.

"M-Mommy?" Zhang Mingrui also called out to Xie Jianyu, all the while praying that the one in front of them was not a ghost.

When the First Demon King saw what happened, he too ceased his onslaught on the barrier. Unless his eyes deceived him, the person who had been sleeping for five whole years was suddenly roused awake.

"What dark magic is this?" He murmured in bewilderment.

Xie Jianyu had never been more confused in his life.

In his head, a dam had burst. Unknown memories, sharp and vivid, flooded his senses like a rushing torrent, crashing against the familiar shores of his known life. A kaleidoscope of faces, whispers of forgotten names, all swirling in a dizzying dance.

He gazed at the two little boys who hugged each other in front of him.

He felt like he knew them, but at the same time, he also did not know them.

And yet, they called him "Mommy"...

"You..."

Xie Jianyu’s eyes slowly drifted from the twins to the ones who stood at the mausoleum doorway, separated from them through the barrier.

"The First Demon King," Xie Jianyu snarled.

He extended his right hand to his side, palm upward.

"Winter Frost, come!"

A tremor shook through the mausoleum, and Winter Frost, long-dormant on its pedestal, stirred. With a resonant clang, it vibrated free, arcing through the air like a streak of cerulean lightning. It found its home with a satisfying click in Xie Jianyu’s outstretched hand.

In a single, fluid motion, Xie Jianyu drew the blade, freeing it from its gilded prison. Winter Frost’s polished surface was ablaze with a heavenly aura, its bright azure color reflected in Xie Jianyu’s determined eyes.

Quick as lightning, the Crown Prince swept the frightened twins behind him, his body forming a protective shield. His hand gripped the hilt of his sword, its icy blade glinting against the First Demon King’s menacing form.

With a battle cry fueled by resolve, Xie Jianyu unleashed his attack.

"Azure Dragon’s Annihilation, First Form!" Amplified by the many spiritual stones that were embedded all over the mausoleum, the ice blade that emerged from the tip of its blade grew ten times its original size. With a deafening roar, it shot toward the First Demon King, a streak of cerulean lightning leaving a trail of shattered marble in its wake.

Peeking out from behind their mother’s body, the boys’ eyes widened in awe as they witnessed the incredible display of their mother’s power.

Debris and dust shot toward the air, making it impossible to see past the barrier. All they could hear was the First Demon King’s voice as he cursed out loud.

And then, one of his subordinates came with unfavorable news -- "Your Majesty! Supreme General Zhang Fengxi is going to arrive soon!!!"

The First Demon King clicked with his tongue in displeasure.

Facing Zhang Fengxi alone stretched him thin. With Xie Jianyu in the mix, prolonging the fight could prove perilous, lethal even.

The wise generals knew when to retreat. It was a lot more honorable than facing defeat.

"RETREAT!!!" He hollered. His demons hurried to cease their battles.

Together with their liege lord, they disappeared into a thick black smoke and escaped from Fuxi Palace.

Like waves receding from a rocky shore, the din of battle retreated, leaving behind a pool of stillness. Inside the mausoleum, Xie Jianyu’s steadfast heartbeat anchored his sons’ fluttering pulses, a lighthouse in the aftermath of the storm.

"M-Mommy?"

Xie Junjie tugged at Xie Jianyu’s sleeve.

"Mommy..."

Zhang Mingrui tugged at his other sleeve.

"You are..."

Xie Jianyu turned around to face both boys. Gingerly, he raised his hands to touch their tiny faces.

Certainly, they looked a lot like him.

A little boy, bearing all the characteristics of the dragon clan, and another little boy, bearing all the marks of the tiger clan.

"You are..."

"M-Mommy..." Xie Junjie’s voice, small and choked with longing, filled the room as he stretched out his arms, yearning for the embrace he’d missed for five years. Zhang Mingrui, tears glistening on his cheeks, mirrored his brother’s gesture, reaching out with a silent plea.

"Mommy..."

At that moment, Xie Jianyu’s heart overflowed. He gathered them both close, the warmth of their bodies melting away the years of separation.

"My babies..." Xie Jianyu’s voice trembled as he gathered them close, his chest overflowing with relief and love. Tears streamed down his face, mingling with theirs, a silent symphony of joy and sorrow.

Xie Junjie and Zhang Mingrui sobbed against their mother’s chest.

"Mommy..."

"Mommy, you are finally awake, wahhhhhh~"

A distant clatter of footsteps grew into a thundering stampede. Then, the shield guarding the mausoleum shimmered and vanished, revealing Zhang Fengxi’s silhouette. His voice, raw with terror, ripped through the stillness.

"MINGRUI, JUNJIE!"

The twins did not answer. They were nestled safely inside their mother’s embrace.

Xie Jianyu slowly raised his tear-streaked face to meet Zhang Fengxi’s. The latter’s expression, etched with fear and anticipation, dissolved into complete and utter shock when he saw his wife again -- not sleeping peacefully as he had the past five years, but moving and awake.

Xie Jianyu’s name settled heavily on his tongue, but Zhang Fengxi did not dare to say it out loud.

If this were an illusion, or a dream, then Zhang Fengxi did not want to wake up. Not so soon.

Please, oh, please.

Let him spend at least one more day with his beloved.

Zhang Fengxi longed to imprint every detail of Xie Jianyu’s expressions onto his soul -- the glistening tears of joy, the radiant smile that chased away years of sorrowful loneliness. He wished to forever remember the feel of his warm breath, a whisper of life against his cheek, and the comforting weight of his slender frame nestled in his arms.

Otherwise, his desire would become a relentless storm, its waves threatening to pull him under, and drag him towards a whirlpool of regret and despair, with no escape possible.

Wordlessly, Zhang Fengxi dragged himself toward the bed, his eyes refusing to leave his wife, not even for a second.

His steps were as heavy as the rest of his body, but he had to go.

Xie Jianyu was waiting for him.

Once he finally arrived in front of the bed, he was able to smell the sweet scent that emanated from Xie Jianyu’s body. It was a lot stronger than when he was lying on the bed, deep in slumber.

"Ah..."

The torrent of feelings crashed over him, stealing his breath and leaving him adrift in a sea of unspoken thoughts. He yearned to articulate what his heart ached to say, but the words remained lost in the tempestuous depths of his soul.

It was Xie Jianyu who spoke first.

"Fengxi..." The omega called out in a soft, broken voice.
