Chapter 395: Chapter 395 : The Spiritual Mountain Competition (4)
"BROTHER ZHANG!!!"
Qiao Wei leaped into the sky and caught Zhang Fengxi in the air.
They narrowly escaped the three-headed lions’ sharp claws.
The impact of the shove sent them both tumbling against a rocky wall. Qiao Wei suppressed a groan and quickly dragged Zhang Fengxi to safety.
"Brother Zhang? Brother Zhang, what happened to you???"
Blinded by the pain, Zhang Fengxi needed time to orient himself. Qiao Wei clicked with his tongue when the three-headed lion launched at them.
He dragged Zhang Fengxi to his feet and flew with him to the other side.
"I am okay," Zhang Fengxi murmured.
He pressed a hand against half of his face, as if trying to prevent his head from splitting into two.
He knew what was happening.
It was his barrier.
Someone was attacking the barrier he laid around the mausoleum.
"Please stand back, Qiao Wei."
Qiao Wei was startled to sense murderous intent flowing from Zhang Fengxi’s body. He immediately let go of the man, but he stubbornly stayed by his side, just in case Zhang Fengxi required his help.
The Three Realm Spear thrummed in Zhang Fengxi’s grip, a potent weapon yearning to be unleashed.
Yet, Zhang Fengxi hesitated. Unleashing his spear art in the Human Realm was a double-edged blade, capable of both vanquishing the beast and endangering innocent lives. But as he surveyed the desolate landscape, the chilling silence a testament to the monster’s reign of terror, he realized the choice had been made for him. No human dared tread this path, leaving only the echoes of fear and the hungry glint in the beast’s eyes.
That made everything much easier for him.
"Stand behind me and don’t move," Zhang Fengxi told Qiao Wei. The air crackled with anticipation as he summoned the spectral form of the Thousand-Legged Giant Centipede. Its chitinous form glinted like obsidian in the fading light and its mandibles made clicking sounds in a menacing way.
Nine years of focused cultivation pulsed within its ethereal veins, a testament to Zhang Fengxi’s relentless pursuit of mastery. The eighteen-year-old him, a whimpering prey in the face of the three-headed lion, wouldn’t stand a chance.
But the current Zhang Fengxi commanded the very essence of fear.
He posed a dangerous adversary, a threat to end the beast’s reign of terror.
Qiao Wei sucked in a breath, his chest burning hotter than the inferno before him. He huddled like a frightened rabbit behind Zhang Fengxi’s towering form, fear twisting his gut into knots.
The fire, summoned from the Supreme General’s fingertips, was a whirlwind of molten fury, consuming the cave in an apocalyptic dance of grey and gold.
Unable to wield any spell to counter Zhang Fengxi’s attack, the lion could only run around to avoid the hungry flame.
Alas, the cave did not grant the lion much space to hide, let alone escape.
In the end, the fiery hurricane caught up with the lion. Its shadows writhed across the writhing three-headed lion, painting its monstrous form in fleeting moments of agony before it was swallowed whole by the incandescent heavenly fire.
Just like the spider demoness, the lion did not stand a chance.
Zhang Fengxi did not have time to wait until it fully succumbed to its sorrowful death.
Time was of the essence, and he did not know how long his barrier would last.
A red flag lay on the ground, just some distance away from them.
Zhang Fengxi grabbed Qiao Wei and the flag in one smooth movement, and flew with both in his hands out of the cave.
Qiao Wei did not even have time to marvel at Zhang Fengxi’s amazing light foot skills before they burst through the barrier and arrived at the start point of the competition.
The sect leaders and other elders who did not partake in the competition were enjoying wine and refreshments when the two men arrived.
They were so shocked that they almost choked on their sweet pastries.
"Q-Qiao Wei! Zhang Fengxi!" Bai Siyang sputtered in disbelief. "Why did you two return so fast???"
With a flick of his wrist, Zhang Fengxi extended the red flag toward Bai Siyang. Then, he eased Qiao Wei upright, setting his trembling feet upon the solid earth.
"We finished, so naturally we returned. Sect Leader Bai, I need to go. Forgive my sudden departure, please take care of Qiao Wei."
With those last words leaving his lips, Zhang Fengxi stepped off the ground and left.
Baffled, the crowd could only watch his silhouette growing smaller and smaller in the sky, until he disappeared into the horizon.
"Qiao Wei, what happened?" Bai Siyang asked his right-hand disciple.
Naturally, he was ecstatic that his sect won the competition so fast, but he was really curious about Zhang Fengxi’s performance.
Qiao Wei opened his mouth to answer, but he suddenly heard a panicked voice in his head.
HELP!
HELP!
Qiao Wei looked around in confusion.
He pressed a hand against his temple and asked, "Who?"
And then the sound grew louder and louder.
HELP!
HELP, MOMMY, HELP!!!
"Ugh..."
"Qiao Wei!"
Qiao Wei fell unconscious before his knees hit the ground.
Far, far away from Mount E’ling, in the Heavenly Realm’s Fuxi Palace, Xie Junjie’s scream tore through the air.
"Mommy, helpp!!!" His voice crackled like lightning as he clutched handfuls of Xie Jianyu’s robe with desperate fervor.
Next to him, Zhang Mingrui was paralyzed with fear. His gaze remained transfixed on the First Demon King, who landed one savage blow after another to destroy the barrier between them.
"Don’t," Zhang Mingrui begged. "No, don’t!!!"
But the First Demon King was not one to give up so close to his goals.
His face was distorted into a grotesque mask of glee, as he relished the terror in the twin boys’ eyes.
"Mommy, HELP! HELPP!!!"
Xie Junjie repeated again and again. In response to his desperation, the sigil on his forehead started to glow brightly.
And then, as if ignited by a celestial flame, the sigil on Xie Jianyu’s forehead lit up as well.
The light settled within his body and the glow gradually vanished.
In the middle of the chaos, Xie Jianyu’s eyes snapped open.
