Chapter 394: Chapter 394 : The Spiritual Mountain Competition (3)
The three-headed lion monster was not meant to be defeated by a human being and a heavenly creature, no matter how advanced their cultivation levels were.
Qiao Wei tried his best to land one powerful attack after another with his sword, but the blows were as weak as a baby’s tickle against the lion’s thick skin and sturdy frame.
The world spun for Qiao Wei as a colossal paw swatted him aside. He felt the air whip past his face as he hurtled through the cave.
"Qiao Wei!!!"
Zhang Fengxi caught him just in time to prevent the man from slamming into the rough stone wall.
The supreme general gritted his teeth.
He might have a chance to subdue the beast alone, but he couldn’t do that if he had to protect Qiao Wei.
"Hold on tight."
Zhang Fengxi lifted Qiao Wei into his arms and flew out of the cave.
Alas, the three-headed lion was not willing to let his prey escape. The booming sound of paws hitting the cave ground told Zhang Fengxi that the beast was close at their heels.
And here was the biggest problem of all.
They had nowhere to escape. The mountain was enclosed in a barrier.
If they exited the cave, he would expose all competition participants to the three-headed lion.
"Ck!"
Zhang Fengxi landed on the ground with Qiao Wei and headed in the opposite direction.
As expected, the lion followed him back into the cave.
Zhang Fengxi lay the unconscious Qiao Wei in a small alcove.
"Don’t move, Jianbao," he whispered as he caressed the man’s cheek lovingly. "I will protect you, I swear."
The supreme general then drew his Three Realm Spear from his back and gave the gigantic lion a menacing glare.
"Come on, you beast," he snarled.
Meanwhile, at Fuxi Palace, the twins were taking their usual nap on top of Xie Jianyu’s body again.
"Junjie, Daddy has been quite busy these days," Zhang Mingrui remarked.
"Um."
Zhang Mingrui puffed up his cheeks.
"I miss playing with Daddy."
Xie Junjie cuddled closer to Xie Jianyu.
"Daddy said that we can invite friends to Fuxi Palace to play together. Why don’t we do that?"
"Hmm..."
Zhang Mingrui tapped on his cheek.
"Let’s invite everyone then. Mo Lihua too."
"Okay."
"Can I come as well?"
"Sure!" Zhang Mingrui cheerfully replied, until he suddenly realized that he had never heard that voice before in his life.
Quick as lightning bolts, the twin boys pushed themselves to a sitting position. Eyes filled with fright, they stared at a smiling face of a stranger, who stood at the mausoleum doorway.
The tall man had two protruding horns the color of obsidian at his forehead. He was dressed completely in black, starting from his head accessories down to his boot chains.
Sporting a haughty smirk across his face, he shot them an enigmatic glance.
"Hello there," he said, his voice as sweet as honey. "Aren’t you two precious."
"W-W-Who are you?" Zhang Mingrui pushed Xie Junjie behind him. He crawled to the edge of the bed, shielding his mother and his younger brother from the stranger’s sight.
"Oh, I am good friends with your parents," the stranger’s smile grew wider when he registered fear in Zhang Mingrui’s eyes. "You have your mother’s face, but you are a little tiger, hm?"
Although Zhang Mingrui tried hard to hide Xie Junjie away, the First Demon King could see the dragon horns poking out behind the tiger boy.
"And your twin brother is a little dragon. Interesting. A Golden Lotus is truly magical."
The First Demon King strode toward the shimmering barrier with a menacing aura. Yet, with a hiss like a serpent’s scorn, a wisp of smoke curled from his boot as it grazed the shimmering threshold. His arrogant stride faltered, a flicker of surprise flickering across his ageless face. He paused, scrutinizing the barrier that arched over the mausoleum’s inner sanctum like a dome of celestial fire.
A tremor coursed through the mausoleum, and on the dome’s surface, flame blossomed. It writhed and pulsed, taking shape before their stunned eyes. It was a magnificent bird of bright red fire, its wings alight with impossible brilliance. As soon as it materialized, it burst upwards like a phoenix reborn and flew away from Fuxi Palace.
The First Demon King followed the bird’s departure with his dark eyes.
"Heh. Supreme General Zhang Fengxi actually has a few tricks in his sleeves," he remarked with sheer amusement in his voice.
The First Demon King tore his gaze from the trembling twins. Sauntering with calculated nonchalance, he reached the cliff’s edge, a sneer twisting his lips as he surveyed the chaos below.
The Fuxi Palace’s once serene courtyard throbbed with the cacophony of war. Lesser demon kings, a vanguard hungry for a pittance of victory after the banquet of defeat they’d been served in the last war, tore through the ranks of celestial defenders in a dance of razor-sharp claws and blinding magic.
Their guttural roars echoed up the sheer rock face, a grim serenade to the impending carnage.
Whether or not the fiery bird managed to alert Zhang Fengxi was of little essence, because he would never make it in time to save everyone in Fuxi Palace.
If the First Demon King’s goal was to butcher the entire staff of the Fuxi Palace, it was. Unfortunately, the person he sought to abduct was tucked in safely within Zhang Fengxi’s barrier.
With a flourish befitting the ruler of the Demonic Realm, the First Demon King unsheathed the Silver Yin Sword.
With all might, he swung his blade hard against the fiery barrier.
Inside the mausoleum, the twins hugged each other and screamed out of fear.
At the same time inside a cave at Mount E’ling, Zhang Fengxi hung poised in the air, frozen mid-descent.
His blade, humming with righteous fury, hovered centimeters above the three-headed lion. Victory practically danced at the edge of the steel, but then, in the blink of an eye, the world splintered before him. An agony unlike any he’d known, an inferno blooming in the deepest recesses of his skull, threatened to shatter him from within.
