Chapter 232: Chapter 232 : Zhang Fengxi’s Mission (2)
Despite his earlier entry into the military this time around, Zhang Fengxi was promoted to the general position at the same time he did in his previous life.
The first assignment that fell on his hands, too, was exactly the same.
The riot of the monkey clan. Ahh... when the residents of the Heavenly Realm spoke about the monkey clan, they were filled with mixed feelings. Some felt sorry for the monkeys, but those who had the pleasure of meeting them rarely shared this sentiment.
Including Zhang Fengxi.
According to the legends, the monkey clan was once one of the clans who strived to rule over the entire heaven.
Alas, its bad relationship with the other nine clans caused the entire clan to be banned from the Heavenly Realm before the fight over the throne even began.
When the dragon clan rose as the ruler of the entire heaven, the monkey clan too sent an omega maiden to the Heavenly Emperor. Alas, the First Heavenly Emperor did not find the poor girl beautiful enough to his liking.
The omega maiden was sent back, crushing all the remaining hopes for the monkey clan to ever claim a spot in the Heavenly Realm.
The monkeys thus continued living in the Human Realm. While the earlier generations were resigned to their fate and tried their best to forgo the past humiliation, the later generations developed immense dissatisfaction with the current situation.
Hence, the riot.
Zhang Fengxi successfully quelled the riot in his previous life, but he regretted the way it ended. Too many innocent lives were lost, and the monkey clan sustained too much damage. They might never again recover.
This time around, Zhang Fengxi planned to do things differently.
The monkeys might be holding a grudge for generations toward the other nine clans, but they were suckers for recognition.
Particularly from the high-ranking officials from the dragon clan.
Now, the second highest person in command was none other than the Crown Prince, Xie Jianyu.
This was why Xie Jianyu’s presence was especially important in this mission.
"It sounds like you want me to do everything," Xie Jianyu complained after Zhang Fengxi explained the plan to him.
"Don’t say that, I was the one who came up with the plan," Zhang Fengxi replied cheerfully.
"..."
Between the person who made the plan and the one who executed it, who made the bigger contributions?
Xie Jianyu did not want to be petty, but he really disliked cheaters. Zhang Fengxi, this lazy disciple, was always on the lookout for corners to cut. It did not sit right with Xie Jianyu at all.
"What will you do while I go and talk to the Monkey King?" Xie Jianyu demanded. "You better not sleep in a tent while waiting for me to come back with good news!"
"No, no, of course, I will come with you," Zhang Fengxi quickly said. "I am not willing to let you out of my eyes."
"Hmph."
After landing at the base of the Great Monkey Mountain, the group slowly hiked their way up to the monkey clan’s lair. Had they come to invade the monkeys, they would have descended from the sky directly.
Exactly because they came in peace, they needed to behave like proper guests -- by asking for permission to enter their territories.
The monkey clan inhabited the upper half of the Great Monkey Mountain. Sturdy wooden posts with sharpened tops were driven to the ground, and connected with horizontal rails to form stockade fences.
Watchtowers were built behind the fences at predetermined distances apart from each other.
On top of each watchtower stood a monkey with a spying glass.
When one of them spotted Zhang Fengxi and his troops, he jumped up and down in a panicked manner on the spot before he jumped down from the watchtower and disappeared.
Zhang Fengxi and Xie Jianyu stood some distance apart from the gate and waited.
A while later, several people appeared.
These were the descendants of the monkeys who cultivated enough to assume a humanoid appearance -- the so-called nobles of the monkey clan.
The tallest one of them, a male, was clad ostentatiously in silver armor with a black cape hanging down his shoulders. He had a pair of brilliant emerald eyes that shone beneath his thick, bushy eyebrows. His face was painted with yellow and red streaks, framed by thick black hair that was styled in braids and tied together at the back of his head.
This was the self-appointed Monkey King, the very person who led the riot.
An elder person next to him, one with a head full of silver hair, whispered a few urgent words into the Monkey King’s ear.
The explanation proved to be too long for the Monkey King’s taste.
Before the elder man finished, the Monkey King stopped him and lazily dug into his itchy ear.
He put his hands between the wooden posts and addressed the guests who came to grace his mountain with their appearance.
"Welcome, General Zhang Fengxi. Are you planning to take over this entire mountain with a humble group of twenty or so soldiers?"
A round of cackles followed the Monkey King’s words. The guards who still maintained half of their monkey traits jumped up and down in a crazed manner.
Xie Jianyu furrowed his brows in displeasure.
Zhang Fengxi squeezed his wife’s hand before he unsheathed his famous sword.
He beamed at the Monkey King and said, "I heard that the Monkey King is a valiant and honorable warrior. Don’t tell me that you thrive upon defeating a small group of soldiers?"
Fury flashed across the Monkey King’s eyes. He harrumphed loudly before he launched into the air, performed an impressive salto, and then landed with a loud thud in front of Zhang Fengxi and Xie Jianyu.
"The last person who called me a coward begged me for my forgiveness before I threw him off the mountain’s cliff," he remarked.
Xie Jianyu stepped forward and stretched an arm in front of Zhang Fengxi, shielding him.
The Monkey King raised his eyebrow at the beauty. He scanned Xie Jianyu from head to toe, but was unable to guess his identity. Too bad that his whisperer was too far away to provide him with the information.
The Monkey King thus tilted his chin upward and looked down at this shorter young man full of contempt.
"And who are you?"
Xie Jianyu calmly answered.
"Crown Prince Xie Jianyu of Fuxi Palace."
