Chapter 231: Chapter 231 : Zhang Fengxi’s Mission (1)

The air was unbelievably fresh, Xie Jianyu thought as he woke up the next morning. He drew a lungful of the fresh air and cuddled closer to his second pillow.

The sound of birds chirping outside was rather melodious.

What kind of birds were those?

Hmm? Were there even birds in the Heavenly Realm?

.....

A shallow frown appeared on the omega’s forehead.

Even the rattling of the carriage was akin to a baby’s crib, rocking him to sleep most gently.

Just then, the carriage rolled over a particularly big stone, jolting him awake.

.....

Xie Jianyu opened his eyes abruptly.

He gathered himself to a sitting position and stared dumbfoundedly at the carriage walls that surrounded him. When he looked down, he saw that he was still wearing his sleeping robe. This discovery stood consistent with his last memory of falling asleep in his bedroom at Fuxi Palace the previous night.

So why was he here, again?

"....."

Did he get kidnapped again? In the middle of the night, from his Fuxi Palace???

That brazen Demon King!

Xie Jianyu’s hand automatically flew to his right side, searching for his spiritual weapon. His hand bumped against said sword’s cold, icy handle. Surprisingly, Winter Frost was lying next to him.

"...."

The First Demon King would not be that stupid to purposefully place Winter Frost next to Xie Jianyu.

If it were not the Demon King, then it was someone else. To be exact, it was the man who he thought he spoke to in his dream last night.

"Halt! Take a break!" Zhang Fengxi hollered next to the carriage.

Xie Jianyu turned his head sharply to the left side and glared at his husband through the window curtain.

The kidnapper in question, his own husband, climbed into the carriage a while later.

"Jianbao, you are awake," he said with a broad grin on his face.

"Zhang Fengxi, what is the meaning of this?" The Crown Prince snapped. "Where are you taking me???"

"It’s like this..."

Hugging Xie Jianyu when he was shooting daggers was like asking for a beating. On the other side, he did not have better ways to placate the baby dragon.

"I have some good news and some bad news for you. Which one do you want to hear first?"

Xie Jianyu narrowed his eyes at his husband.

"The bad news."

Zhang Fengxi’s face fell.

"Why not the good news first?" he asked in a dejected tone.

Xie Jianyu scoffed.

"Because I already know what the good news is. Congratulations on your appointment as a general."

Zhang Fengxi’s mouth dropped open in amazement.

"Thank you! But wait, how did you find out???"

"The proposal to appoint a new general is passed between multiple hands to gain seals of approval from all relevant parties. I, of course, also had to review the proposal."

Zhang Fengxi looked at Xie Jianyu as if he were the Goddess of Mercy in person.

"My wife!" The alpha grasped Xie Jianyu’s hands full of gratitude. "I knew that you would take my side!"

Xie Jianyu humphed.

"It’s not that I took your side. Your many daring achievements granted you this promotion. If we go by maturity, I think that Wu Shen..."

"Sssh...!"

Zhang Fengxi pressed a finger against Xie Jianyu’s lips to silence him.

"Jianbao, you spout harsh words, but I know that deep in your hearts, you love and admire me. Is that not right?"

"..."

Xie Jianyu stared at Zhang Fengxi blankly.

"Riiiight...?"

Zhang Fengxi was literally begging for acknowledgment.

Xie Jianyu gave a subtle nod out of pity.

"Thank you, Jianbao. You are the best, best wife in the entire three realms!"

Zhang Fengxi hugged the omega tightly. Xie Jianyu rolled his eyes behind the overjoyed alpha’s back. But then, a tiny smile played around his lips and he put his arms around Zhang Fengxi’s mighty frame in return.

"Mmm. I am glad that it makes you happy."

And then, Xie Jianyu recalled the important question that remained unanswered.

"So why am I here?"

Zhang Fengxi cleared his throat.

"Alright, now here is the bad news. Supreme General Liang Yuxuan said that it was customary for all new generals to be sent on a solo mission. My success or failure will determine my placement in the military."

"... And?"

"Well, my wife is so strong and powerful. Wouldn’t it be great if you could help me to complete this mission?"

Xie Jianyu wordlessly rose to his feet.

"Jianbao? Jianbao, where are you going?"

Xie Jianyu ignored him. He climbed off the carriage and started walking away.

Outside, the rest of the troops were in the middle of taking a break.

Some of them were in the middle of enjoying some late breakfast. One soldier, in particular, had congee dripping from his mouth when he saw the esteemed, newly-appointed General Zhang running after Xie Jianyu while crying out loud,

"Jianbao! Jianbao! Wife, please don’t leave me behind!"

The couple left the soldiers behind and went into a remote spot. When they arrived near a stream, Zhang Fengxi quickly pulled Xie Jianyu’s hand.

"Jianbao, be careful! The water current is strong around here!"

"Hmph!"

Xie Jianyu flicked his sleeves and lightly treaded the bank of the river. As soon as he reached a safe spot, he began scolding Zhang Fengxi.

"Zhang Fengxi, do you still have any face to maintain??? Do you know what a solo mission means? It means that you have to do it yourself!"

Zhang Fengxi grinned at Xie Jianyu.

"Solo mission does not mean that we are not allowed to enlist some help. In fact, the mark of a good general is not the ability to do everything but the ability to draw the highest potential out of his soldiers... HEY JIANBAO!"

"What do I get if I help you?" Xie Jianyu asked as he continued his march away from Zhang Fengxi and his solo mission.

"My endless gratitude and a successful general as your husband!" Zhang Fengxi answered readily.

"...."

Shameless.

Too shameless.

Xie Jianyu wondered if he could retract his seal of approval. Maybe Zhang Fengxi should remain a commandant for a while longer...

"Jianbao, come on, please?"

Zhang Fengxi made puppy eyes at his wife, hoping to soften Xie Jianyu’s heart. Xie Jianyu was always so friendly toward animals. He, Zhang Fengxi, was no less adorable than, say, Caihong.

The Crown Prince groaned.

"What is this solo mission about?" He asked, regretting the question as soon as it slipped out of his mouth.

Zhang Fengxi flashed him a shameless smile.

"I have to subdue the riot of the monkey clan."
