Chapter 87: We meet again
Alexander had his fingers crossed, his eyes closely monitoring the creature, praying that it didn’t look up.
Both Alexander and Ebenezer exhaled softly once the black figure passed their tree and continued on its way, glad that they had survived.
"We should wait up here for a while before we continue. Try and sense Silas’ magic while we wait." Ebenezer said and Alexander closed his eyes and tried to focus on picking up the traces of magic around him.
"We are close. A couple of miles and we should be there." Alexander said and after confirming that their surroundings were safe enough, they left the tree and continued on their journey.
"Nooo....not again." Alexander groaned when they ran into another group of hellhounds that afternoon.
"Silas should be somewhere around here." Alexander whispered as they climbed a tree before the dogs could see them.
"All I see is trees and a river. Are you sure?" Ebenezer frowned and Alexander closed his eyes, concentrating on finding the single trace of magic that had a fifteen percent similarity to his.
"Yes I am sure, the magic is strongest here. He is somewhere within a ten meter radius." Alexander was certain and once the hellhounds left, they continued their search until they reached a spot near the river that was heavily covered with a mist that made it hard to see ahead.
"Careful, it could be a cloaking spell." Alexander warned Ebenezer who was ready to walk forward. The vampire stilled, pausing in his steps to look at his companion.
"I have little experience with magic but I am sure the one thing you don’t want to be messing with is a cloaking spell. Especially one by a powerful wizard like Silas. One step forward could shred your body into pieces or send you to some place you have never been. They are pretty nasty spells." Alexander cautioned and Ebenezer smirked subtly.
Of course Silas had thought of keeping out any intruders.
"So what’s our next move?" Ebenezer asked.
"I will first find out whether it’s a cloaking spell." Alexander replied as he closed his eyes, his brows furrowing into a small frown when he opened them.
"Just as I had feared, it’s a cloaking spell and a very powerful one as well." Alexander admitted and the vampire didn’t look so happy.
"It could take years for my magic to become strong enough to counter the spell so, all we can do wait for Silas to get out or, let us in." Alexander added and Ebenezer sighed softly in disbelief.
They had come this far only to discover that he couldn’t get his hands on Silas.
Ebenezer sat down slowly, hungry and frustrated.
"You don’t look so good." Alexander noted as he watched the vampire whose eyes were a little dull as he stared ahead into the fog.
"I am hungry and frustrated, of course I don’t look good." Ebenezer murmured, feeling grumpy.
"You can have my blood." Alexander offered as he held out his wrist and Ebenezer was surprised, his canines lengthening as he looked at the small vein on Alexander’s wrist that was pumping blood, slow and steady.
It called out to him and Ebenezer swallowed as he tore his eyes away and looked at Alexander.
"Are you sure?" The vampire asked and Alexander nodded in approval as a faint smirk covered his lips.
"Just don’t drain me." He added playfully as the vampire’s eyes flicked back to his wrist.
"I won’t." Ebenezer assured, his voice tight from restraint as he slowly sank his teeth into Alexander’s skin, taking his blood.
The vampire had fought so hard to protect him and the best way Alexander could show his gratitude was by not letting him starve.
Ebenezer pulled away a minute later, teeth blood stained and his complexion a little less pale.
"Thank you." The vampire licked the blood from his lips as he tore a small strip from his already ruined white shirt and wrapped it around Alexander’s wound.
"You’re welcome." Alexander smiled softly, feeling slightly lightheaded as he reached for the bottle of water in his backpack.
They sat in a comfortable silence for a while, each lost in their own thoughts.
Alexander thought of Damon and Ebenezer thought of how he yearned to torture Silas once he found him.
"That’s odd." Ebenezer was the first time notice the fog parting to reveal a small pathway.
The vampire’s voice drew Alexander from his thoughts and relief flooded his entire being as he looked at the pathway through the fog.
"It’s an invitation. Silas is letting us go to him." Alexander explained and Ebenezer stood hurriedly, feeling happy that he could get to act on his thoughts sooner than later.
He offered Alexander a hand to help him get up and together, they started their way down the narrow pathway, walking through the mist that was hurriedly covering the path that they had left behind.
They walked for about ten minutes before a great oak tree came into view, it’s trunk engraved with various runes that strangely reminded Alexander of the entrance to the dark forest.
Unlike the rest of the forest, they could partially see the bright blue afternoon sky and the trees around the great oak looked normal.
As they neared, Alexander noticed that there was a door at the bottom of the tree and Ebenezer rolled his eyes in disbelief.
Of course Silas lived in a tree.
The door swung open and they were hesitant to walk inside.
After skeptically watching the door for a while, a man walked out, clad in a casual green shirt and black pants.
His midnight black hair was short, barely brushing past his brow and if it wasn’t for his unique golden eyes, Alexander could have doubted that he was Silas.
He didn’t look a day over thirty for a person that was centuries old!
"We meet again, Ashford." The wizard smirked as his eyes looked at the vampire at his door step, lingering a little more than was necessary before curiously glancing at his companion.
