Chapter 86: I will pounce on you
"It worked." Gareth admitted and Eros smirked as their eyes met.
"I know." He smiled faintly and it was the first genuine smile that Gareth had seen from him and he thought that it looked nice.
His mate was good looking with his thick midnight black hair and magnetic brown eyes.
Gareth swallowed softly as he realized that he just wanted to tug his mate closer and sink his fingers in his hair as he inhaled his intoxicating scent.
"Quit looking at me like that." Eros warned his mate whose eyes were intense with an emotion he recognized so well.
Desire.
"Or what?" Gareth asked and Eros smirked.
"Or I will pounce on you." He replied and the desire in Gareth’s eyes intensified as his eyes raked Eros’ body from head to toe.
"I have no objections." The dragon smirked and his heart rate picked up as he watched Eros move closer.
Eros leaned in slightly, placing a teasing kiss on the corner of his mate’s lips before he pulled away and smirked.
"Another time perhaps. I will see you tomorrow Gareth." Eros walked away, throwing one last glance at his mate that was still frozen.
Gareth’s eyes were conflicted as he watched his mate leave.
He wanted him but a part of him couldn’t shake the fear that Eros’ could be just like the members of his family that had betrayed him.
Gareth hoped he was wrong but he couldn’t draw to a conclusion as he sighed softly, his mind replaying the most traumatic memories of his life.
....
Seven hundred years ago, he had been a young dragon, happily mated to a fine dragon female and serving in the court of Draken Skyfire, the father to the current dragon king.
He had been one of the king’s finest advisors and that’s why the betrayal had come as a surprise.
His people were powerful but one rogue among them had scared the king into thinking that they were all a threat that should be annilated.
And so, the terror had been, mates had been separated, those that were resistant killed or imprisoned and Gareth had barely survived through it all.
He had fought for his mate but she had been taken away and as the grief nearly killed him, he had used a spell that was forbidden to put himself into a deep slumber, not sure he could survive but if he did, Gareth had sworn to take his revenge.
He had eventually woken up and he had spent the past year planning to destroy the royals but fate had twisted his plans in a way he hadn’t imagined.
A mate. Eros...
His new mate wasn’t to blame for all the anger and pain that had built up in his heart over the centuries and
Gareth knew he couldn’t go on hating him but letting himself love Eros felt like he could be betraying his people because as much as he wished Eros wasn’t a royal, he was.
The blood of the people that had hurt him ran through his veins and Gareth sighed loudly, utterly conflicted and hurt.
He wanted his mate but at the same time, he feared to let him into his heart.
...
Alexander hoped his heart didn’t give out as he ran as fast as he could, trying not to stumble over tree roots in his attempt to escape the vicious creatures that were running after him.
"Run faster Alexander, faster!" Ebenezer yelled from behind him, single handedly taking on the dog-like creatures that were determined to tear them apart.
Hellhounds were the one of the things on the list he had dreaded because they moved and hunted in packs of a dozen or more with their double heads and razor sharp teeth inspiring fear in their victims.
With a loud curse, Ebenezer made him way over to him in a second, his clothes ripped and his fangs exposed.
"I am going to have to carry you if we are to survive this. Get onto my back, now!" Ebenezer yelled through the noise of the loud barks that were hurriedly approaching them.
Alexander didn’t need a second invitation as he jumped onto the vampire’s back, his eyes glancing back at the red eyes creatures that were only a meter away before they dashed away at lightning speed.
It had been three days since they started looking for Silas and the closer they got, the more creatures they ran into.
The hellhounds were determined not to lose them and Alexander worried as the vampire’s speed started to reduce.
"I am not at my peak strength right now so we can’t get far enough to escape them. Can you climb a tree?" Ebenezer asked.
"Yes." Alexander replied as he jumped off the vampire’s back and started to hurriedly climb the nearest tree.
Ebenezer followed him and once they were high enough, Alexander relaxed, finding enough concentration to cast a spell that could help to mask their scents.
It was only morning but it was already the second time that they were running for their lives.
Alexander’s eyes were alert as he looked at the big brown hellhound that was sniffing around their tree and he really hoped that it didn’t look up.
"Don’t worry, they can’t climb trees." Ebenezer whispered when he noticed his worry and Alexander offered him a grateful smile.
He was so scared but his resolve to find Silas outweighed his fear and as he hung onto his branch, he hoped the creatures could be on their way so that they could resume their journey.
A sharp shriek that was certainly not from a human pierced the air and the hellhounds scattered, running as fast as they could from the bigger predator.
Alexander had no idea what had produced the sound but one glance at Ebenezer who was paler than usual worried him.
"What was that?" Alexander murmured , his voice barely audible and the vampire that was seated next to him turned to face him, his sky blue eyes sharp and alert.
"That was a soul sucker." Ebenezer replied and a shiver went down Alexander’s spine when he eventually saw the creature in question.
Clad in a black cloak and floating around was a creature whose build was similar to that of a human being.
It floated around meters below them, its pace painfully slowly for Alexander’s liking.
