Chapter 87: We deserve pardon (Gaius)
It is said that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but before that light, there is always darkness. Zach having his mate back was not enough, as all the powers are set to rise up against them.
There is little my strength can do, as a greater part of the battle must only be fought by them.
However, that was not inclusive of Thaddeus, in my arrogant point of view, but the asshole sure believed in his strength to the extent where he dared to mock my Alpha and best friend.
The fact that we were the same did nothing to cool the anger burning inside of me, and I so much wanted to take him on, but that sure did not happen as well.
Thaddeus was smart, though not knowing I was Lycan. Merely opting to fight on behalf of my Alpha was a courage that burned his confidence so he refused.
Anna’s appearance and worry about Zach soothed my heart to the highest degree, and I was ready to go by her plan before it all happened.
In human form, Zach was a beast, but the asshole of a Lycan heir quickly took his Lycan form before Zach could finish him off. The disappointing part was the fact that the tribe members didn’t trust their Alpha enough to win this battle, fleeing for their lives before the battle in both their wolf and Lycan form begins.
I was torn between encouraging them or leaving them to hear the outcome of the battle. Thaddeus might be strong in Lycan form, but I knew Zach was unrelenting.
He would never allow himself to suffer shame. "I think we should act now," Anna said urgently. Well, she wasn’t privy to the mindlink between me or the tribe members because she wasn’t coronated yet and hadn’t taken the oath.
For a moment, I almost obeyed Anna’s order because she was our soon-to-be Luna, but that would also destroy Zach’s ego. To be saved by his soon-to-be Luna was not something he would like.
"There is still hope. Zach hasn’t shifted yet," I whispered back to her, but she was too worried. "We can’t risk anything happening to him. Let’s go by the plan," she whispered, but this time in an urgent tone, so I obeyed.
Just before I was about to shift, Thaddeus’s Lycan lunged at Zach, the latter looked so small because of the size of the Lycan, but strangely, he did not shift immediately, which made me perceive that he has a plan.
"Now!" Bella screamed, but before we knew it, three silver knives were flying in the air. Thaddeus’s Lycan was about to dodge the first but not the second and third.
One pierced through his neck, and the second his heart, earning a devastating growl from him, right before he fell to the ground, taking back his human form.
Curtis, his father’s beta, rushed to his side, and the tribe members who were taking to their heels before froze with stun.
"How did it happen? The Lycan is dead. Our Alpha killed him," one of them said, and the tribe roared with joy.
"Our Alpha killed the Lycan." They gathered around Zach, ready to lift him in a victory dance, but Zach’s expression was stern as he chastised them. "You never believed in me, so why the hypocrisy?"
Their heads were lowered, and one of them was about to speak. However, something interesting already caught Zach’s attention, and that was Anna, who was pale from shock.
"How did you do it?" she murmured when Zach reached and embraced her. "It’s simple. My wolf warned me of his inability to defeat a Lycan, so I had to take my chances in the strength you gave me."
Indeed, it was the elixir. No one would have got those areas of a Lycan so perfectly, but as soon as their lips met as I wanted, Curtis interrupted.
"Please help him. He’s still alive," he pleaded. Anna hastened to them, ready to finish what Zach started. "He shamed my mate and threatened to kill him. Thaddeus doesn’t deserve to live."
"What about your father?" Curtis questioned. Anna paused as he continued to speak in a pleading tone. "Thaddeus here has been caring for him all his life, so do you still think he deserves death?"
Anna looked confused, and the tribe members were too ashamed to speak.
"Get the healers," Zach suddenly ordered. Anna stared at him with confusion. "Why are you saving him?"
"I know you want to see your father. It won’t be right for you to have the blood of his caretaker on your hand."
Anna turned in the direction of her mother, but the woman looked indifferent. It was just hard to crack whatever she must be thinking at the moment.
"Fine, the healers can save him only if he accepts my rejection," Anna proposed. Curtis looked disappointed, but looking at the bleeding Thaddeus nodding his head, with his eyes rolling to the back, he reluctantly conveys the message from the dying man. "He accepts your rejection, but aren’t you afraid of losing your Lycan abilities?"
"I made my decision. He just refused to listen," Anna said seriously. Confusion registered on the faces of the tribe members, but no one cared to give them any explanation at the moment until Zeke’s excitement changed everything.
Anna seemed to be recovering from the pain of the rejection when Zeke screamed. "That’s my dad." His excited words got everyone around flabbergasted. "His dad? What’s going on?"
Thaddeus was carried away, and only Curtis accompanied him. Being at a close peripheral with death, I doubted that he would try anything funny after recovering, if he ever does.
Perhaps due to his Lycan taking the knife, the effect wouldn’t be great on his human side, which was the only explanation I could give.
"I think it’s time for me to make some changes in the constitution," Zach announced. Anna grabbed his arm and whispered something. However, Zach smiled and continued to speak as if nothing happened.
"Like I said, there will be changes in the constitution," he mentioned, but this time, Anna’s mother was the one who intervened.
"If it’s about me, then forget it. You don’t have to change the rules for your son."
I struggled to understand what she meant, but it began to make sense. Zach must have wanted to change the rules to welcome her to the tribe because of how her words seemed to affect him.
After the three of them said a few things in whispers, Anna was in tears, but her mother embraced Zeke, pinching him playfully on the cheeks.
Zeke turned emotional, and so did Zach, as he continued with the announcement. "Zeke is my son, and he is also a chimera."
The confusion on their faces only increased with his words, but he continued to elaborate. "Annabelle is my mate, and you all know how I misjudged her before. Not only that, she saved my life over ten years ago, and I vowed to marry her. Zeke inherited his genes from her, so the boy you are seeing now is just five months old."
"Alpha, this is dangerous," one of the warriors pointed out. Zach shook his head sadly. "No, it isn’t. Annabelle already rejected her vampire and Lycan mate, so right now, she’s completely one of us. As for Zeke, I will explain later."
It was hard to understand why I felt that the words felt too heavy for his mouth, but then Bella’s mother took the mantle.
"Your Alpha will tell you the rest after the coronation, but as for now, I’m so happy to meet you all, and though I’m not your kind, I feel strangely at home."
Her words caused Anna to smile, but it was a sad one.
"Alpha, not everybody understands what a chimera is, and there’s no way this boy is five months old," another warrior pointed out. Zion answered him.
"I watched him being birthed, and what your Alpha says is right. It was when Zeke saw his father for the first time that all his senses heightened, and he’s indeed five months old. When you all condemned your soon-to-be Luna to die, she was pregnant with your Alpha’s pup."
At this moment, I didn’t know what to make of their expressions, but it was exactly what I wanted to see. The remorse in their eyes was soothing.
"We are sorry. It’s that evil Kari, but she’s already dead, and I heard her pup has been sold to the human traffickers, and his organs might be harvested and sold to help those who need it."
That was something I hadn’t heard myself, wondering when Zach made the arrangement, but I liked it. Allowing such a pup to grow will only cause future havoc for the tribes, and killing it directly felt inhuman since it could do a lot of good for the tribe members.
’Don’t think too much. I exchanged him for a lifelong supply of blood for my mother-in-law, but her conditions are heartbreaking,’ Zach’s mindlink interrupted my thoughts.
Before I could process everything, a familiar voice interrupted the atmosphere. "Since you are harboring vampires, I too deserve pardon." It was Ivy, or so I thought until the second twin appeared, holding a crystal moon in her palm. "Indeed, we deserve pardon too."
