Chapter 86 - He’s going to kill us all (Annabelle)
"Thaddeus or whoever he is doesn’t scare me, and if he wants a fight, he’ll get one. But for now, I need to take care of your mother first. She mentioned that at the Vampire castle, Draven had a supplier of blood from donors who were paid for it. It’s an arrangement with humans," he revealed, piquing my curiosity.
The human world has always seemed sacred to me, but I was unaware of such an arrangement. Were people so desperate for money that they would sell their blood?
"Wait, so it’s like a trade?" I asked, intrigued. He smiled, though it seemed forced. "There are agencies involved, like hospitals, but it’s a black-market operation selling to them. Some individuals do it solely for the money."
As difficult as it was to accept, my greatest fear was that he would end up fighting with Thaddeus. However, one of my questions was answered regarding how the vampires managed to survive without hunting for blood as they did before.
If not, their bites would have turned many people into vampires, but it seems that the laws are effective after all. For eight years, I lived with my mom without knowing she was a vampire because I never saw her drink blood.
"Alright, I’ll stay with her," I agreed. He nodded and kissed me on the forehead before rushing down the stairs. Perhaps after dealing with my mother, he will come to his senses and find a way to handle Thaddeus without a fight.
"Mom," I whispered as I pushed the door open. My heart sank when I saw how pale and frightening my mother looked with her elongated canines.
Despite her efforts to conceal it, her true nature was impossible to hide. "Belle, please leave. I don’t want to harm you," she warned, struggling against the urge to hurt me. I couldn’t abandon her in this state, not after all the sacrifices she had made for me.
"It’s okay, Mom. I don’t mind if you hurt me," I said earnestly, but she refused. "No, I’ve sacrificed everything in my life for you to have a different existence. Living forever isn’t as glamorous as it seems, and if it weren’t for my longing to see you, I would wish to feel the sun without the need for protective cream."
Her words painted a bleak picture of eternal life, and the unspoken message was sinking in. Vampires can regenerate unless they are killed, and their bodies are destroyed by fire.
"What are you suggesting?" My voice trembled. In the brief moments when my vampire instincts surfaced, the sun had been unbearable for me. If she wanted to experience it without the protective cream, she seemed to be seeking death. Mom, you have to hang in there. You have a grandchild," I reassured her. She appeared pleased, but her smile was faint as she brushed past me when I tried to hug her.
"If I die, he will be set free. This life isn’t the best. Always hiding in the dark or being controlled by those who should help and protect you," she expressed, her words leaving me perplexed.
"Mom, you have no idea what you are talking about. Once Zach finds a solution, you will be fine," I tried to reassure her, but she seemed agitated.
"Quick, get out of here, lock me out, or someone will get hurt," she urgently warned. I wanted to give her space, but seeing her weakening state, my heart sank.
"Mom, how have you survived all these years?" I inquired earnestly. She smiled at me, her eyes briefly darkening before returning to their usual pale color, then darkening again.
"I trusted the wrong person, but it was worth it. Madam Superior gave me something to prevent your thirst and protect you from sunlight. It worked most of the time for me too, but when she discovered you were the one she hunted, she removed that protection."
Now it all made sense why I never felt any weakness as a vampire, only enjoying the super speed that came with it and the fact that, even though I suffered through the trials, she was paying the ultimate price for me.
If this isn’t unconditional love, then I don’t know what is. Now, it was time to do the same for her, which meant protecting her as she did for me.
"It doesn’t matter. We will find a way, but you have to hang in there. Promise me you will live for me, Mom. I miss you so much."
I rushed to embrace her, but she was too fast, pushing me away. For the first time, I missed my super speed, but this was my punishment for rejecting my vampire side.
"Belle, open up," I heard Zach’s voice and quickly did so, hoping for some miracle. He carried a flask with pints of blood. "Where did you get it so fast?"
"I have my ways," he replied hastily, but before he could offer the blood to her, my mother already snatched it from the flask, unrestrained by distance. She was that fast.
Hearing her chugging down the content, I felt a sense of fear. "How often can we get this?"
Zach was about to respond when mom beat him to it. "One is enough. Please keep the rest," she said in an excited tone, the darkness around her eyes disappeared at once.
"Well, I made contact with some of the suppliers, so it won’t be a problem to get you more whenever you need it. Those humans willingly donate for the money they make from it. From the agent I spoke to, they call themselves black market professional donors," Zach explained, and a sigh of relief escaped me.
However, our quiet moment was interrupted by the sound of Thaddeus’s voice from downstairs.
"Alpha Zach, you coward. If you want my mate, then come down and fight." My heart stopped as I stared at Zach. "You don’t have to do this. Let Gaius fight."
At this point, I could only trust myself or Gaius to take Thaddeus down, but it seemed none of the men would allow me to fight, so Gaius was my only hope.
Before he could respond, Thaddeus spoke again. "Don’t you think it’s shameful for your beta to fight in your place? How shameless can you be?" He asked in a mocking tone. My anger boiled, but Zach was already at the door. I quickly pulled him back.
"Where are you going? Let’s think of a plan," I suggested, but he smiled at me. "There’s no need for a plan. I am born to win."
The rumors were true that he never lost a fight, but this was a Lycan we were dealing with.
"Look, Zach, Lycans..." my words stuck in my throat as he rushed out of the door without looking back. I was about to run after him when mom pulled me back.
"Let him go, Belle. He’s an Alpha and doesn’t need protecting." I stared at her as if she were insane. "Thaddeus is a Lycan, mom. This time, Zach needs protection, and I’m going to intervene."
It was too late to come up with a plan, so the only way would be for me to gain Gaius’s trust to help me kill Thaddeus. However, his father’s beta was also there.
Mom wanted to say something, but I didn’t have time to listen, rushing out of the room. She followed behind me, but the screams were coming from the forecourt of the packhouse, so I joined them.
Mom followed but remained on the porch due to the sunlight. Luckily, I’ve never tasted blood, so the beetroot and garlic work for me. However, for someone who loves the taste of blood, that solution will not work for her.
"Gaius, can you take down the beta?" I asked when I got close to Gaius. Zion looked afraid because if Zach dies, then so would he, but Zeke appeared the most worried.
Gaius nodded and asked in return, "Do you have a plan?" I whispered the plan to him, "Take down the beta, and I’ll help Zach take down Thadeus. No one must know how they both died since they encroached on enemy territory."
Gaius stared at me strangely, "Well, from what I heard after you both went upstairs, Thaddeus is your cousin. His father and yours are brothers. Are you sure you want him dead?"
I never met my father, and Thaddeus seemed to be the only link, but how could I let Zach die? Zeke needs him.
"He asked for it," I said with determination. Gaius nodded and whispered, "Let’s stick to the plan, but honestly, I’m curious to see how far Zach can go."
Zach surprised me during their fight in human form. Thaddeus struggled and sustained numerous injuries. With the tribe members cheering for Zach, both Thaddeus and his father’s beta seemed to lose their composure.
Suddenly, they exchanged glances, and Thaddeus transformed into his Lycan form. The tribe members scattered, fearing for their lives. "He’s a Lycan. He’s going to kill us all."
