Chapter 54: Just a small favor (Beta Gaius)
After overhearing the conversation between Alpha Zach and Zion, I believed that Alpha Zion had changed and even revealed my true self to him. However, I now regret my actions. If Alpha Zach finds out about me, he will not spare my life.
I have unknowingly become entangled in Alpha Zion’s deceitful plans. How could I have been so naive to think he had changed?
This is why we all stood by Alpha Zach when he was banished, but now I must find a way to extricate myself from this situation and never trust anyone again.
"Alpha Zion, I had hoped you had changed. I will pretend I did not hear what you said. May the moon goddess be the judge between us," I stated as I reached for the door, only to find it locked.
"Leaving already? It’s just a small favor. I only need a few she-wolves in his room while he sleeps, and I can handle the rest," he shamelessly proposed. My respect for him dwindled, but I stood my ground and issued a stern warning.
"Unlock this door or you may have to return in wolf form," I threatened, prepared to shift. Since I had already revealed myself to him, my transformation wouldn’t be a surprise, and in Lycan form, this machine would be nothing more than a trinket in my hands.
"Are you really not going to help me?" he asked calmly, but my anger simmered. "My loyalty and life belong to Alpha Zach."
Expecting him to be upset, he surprised me with a smile. "Then you are the only one I can trust. I was just testing you earlier, and it’s okay, Anna is safe, and she gave birth to a healthy pup."
A wave of relief washed over me upon hearing about Anna. Her well-being was important to me, but I recalled that the pup belonged to Alpha Zach.
When I learned that Anna was pregnant, I was extremely worried, but now everything confirmed my suspicions. She was indeed the red-haired woman.
"Are you certain it’s Alpha Zach’s?" I asked eagerly. He nodded. "Ninety-nine percent."
"Then please inform Anna that I will do everything in my power to clear her name. It’s challenging with all the issues arising, but I will give it my best effort," I said before a mind link interrupted me.
’Gaius, come to my office with Jack,’ Alpha Zach’s cold voice echoed in my mind. I glanced at Alpha Zion, silently pleading for him to unlock the door. "I’m sorry, but I have to go. Alpha Zach is summoning me."
He seemed like he wanted to say more, but as an Alpha himself, he understood the consequences of disobeying orders. I quickly mindlinked Jack on my way to the Alpha’s office, and he met me at the entrance, looking confused.
"Beta Gaius, is everything okay?" he asked nervously, mirroring my own uncertainty.
"I’m not sure, but the Alpha is reasonable," I reassured him as we entered. Alpha Zach was pacing back and forth, his demeanor cold and unwelcoming.
I had hoped that with the appointment of a new gamma, my workload would lighten. However, Alpha Zach was not quick to trust, and for months, the new gamma had not even been able to meet him, only taking orders through me.
"Jack, you were the supervisor of Annabelle," he questioned. I was glad he called her by her real name and not by the title of a witch.
Jack seemed afraid but answered truthfully. "Yes, Alpha, you already asked me before."
"Then tell me why she was able to make her way into one of our guest rooms," he questioned. Jack seemed confused, but I knew where Alpha Zach was headed with the question.
"Jack, relax and answer the questions truthfully," I encouraged him. He nodded and began to speak. "Alpha, Miss Kari at that time put Anna in charge of the waiters because of her speed, but later that night, we couldn’t find her."
Alpha Zach’s expression changed instantly. "So, when did you see her after that?" He asked. Jack frowned a little, as if trying to remember.
"It was early the next morning in the attic. She was asleep, but her body was covered in hickeys, so I asked if she had been with a man. She admitted it but said she didn’t know who, so I took the blame when Miss Kari, Ivy, and Iris questioned and told them I was drunk and slept with Anna."
It’s strange that none of us were aware of this information. Alpha Zach’s gaze fixed on me, prompting me to explain. "Alpha, I was unaware of this account, but may I ask him some questions?"
"Go ahead," he replied, leaning back in his swivel chair. I turned to Jack and inquired, "Tell me about Annabelle’s hair." I stole a glance at Alpha Zach, who also seemed intrigued by the question.
"Since she joined our tribe, she always had short blonde hair. However, that morning, her hair was unexpectedly long. When I asked her about it, she admitted that she had been wearing a blonde wig all along."
Before I could ask the next question, Alpha Zach beat me to it. "Can you describe the details of her hair that morning? And how did she wear a wig?"
Jack nodded eagerly and began to explain, "I didn’t see the need to ask about why she wore a wig but her hair was long and wavy, not too curly, but blonde and slightly damp, as if she had just showered."
This description matched the red-haired woman in the footage, with the only difference being the color.
"One last thing. Did you know if she regularly dyed her hair?" Alpha Zach asked, Jack hesitated, and I could sense the importance of Alpha Zach’s question.
"I honestly have no idea, but I do remember that she took good care of her hair."
"How so?" Alpha Zach inquired. Jack sighed before responding, "She used to wear a bandana around it. If it weren’t for that morning, I would have never seen her real hair. It was similar to Miss Kari’s, except for the color."
Personally, I wouldn’t focus too much on the color, considering the availability of hair dyes.
"That’s all for today, but one last thing. Can you share any other observations you made about her? Did she ever mention her family?" Alpha Zach asked, and I observed Jack’s expression change.
