Chapter 53: Do you believe it now? (Alpha Zion)
I felt conflicted about making Zach pay for his actions, as I felt indebted to him for taking his Alpha position. Despite this, I wanted to give him a chance, even though I knew Bella might resent me for it.
Zach’s reaction was one of surprise when confronted with the revelation. "How did you find out about that incident?" he inquired, his expression unreadable. Despite our similar appearances, our personalities were distinct.
"Bella informed me. How else could someone infiltrate your tribe? She was serving drinks when her pheromones took effect. She was drugged and fearful of being discovered without her wolf. Confused and disoriented, she ended up in that room.
Upon waking, she heard the shower running and footsteps approaching, prompting her to flee with the bed linens," I recounted, relaying Bella’s version of events.
"No wonder I couldn’t find the woman, and the footsteps must be Kari," he murmured. I heard him and asked,
"Do you believe it now?" It seemed like progress was being made, but when our eyes met, anger flared in his.
My risks and efforts seemed to have been in vain. "Even if she’s the woman from that night, it doesn’t change the fact that she killed my beloved sister. For that reason alone, she deserves death," Zach growled, and I felt all hope slipping away.
"I did my best, Zach, and I will raise your pup as my own," I assured him. He shook his head and questioned, "What exactly do you want? The only pup I will accept is the one from the woman who saved me. Who knows if you slept with her and are now trying to frame me to gain control of my tribe," he accused, leaving me speechless.
Yes, I have made mistakes, but meeting Bella has changed me, and now all I want is for both of our tribes to prosper. I didn’t know how to explain it again, countless times.
"Zach, I don’t care if you believe me, but Bella is the girl who saved you. After she dyed her hair, I couldn’t prove it to you, but I had her cut it and use it for a wig. If you don’t believe me, why not come and see her now."
Even though Bella might hate me, this was my only chance to smooth things between us and make up for the pain I caused him, but Zach was far from believing me.
The sarcastic clap of his hands hinted at his stance on the matter. "Zion, you said it yourself that she dyed her hair before, so you think I will believe she has natural red hair? I know without a doubt that pup is yours, so don’t pin him on me because you won’t get my tribe. It’s my sweat, and it’s mine alone," he hissed. I sighed out of frustration. This was indeed the end for me.
"I wish you all the best, Zach, and this is the last you will ever see of me concerning this matter. Since you don’t want your pup, don’t come and claim him in the future because I will never give him to you."
I left the pack house and got into the car, but before I could drive off, the passenger door opened and a familiar figure, entered.
"Gaius, aren’t you worried about being banished for associating with me?" I asked.
As a beta of the tribe, I doubted he would betray Zach, but his response was a weak smile.
"Alpha Zion, please drive. I’ll find my way back once we’re a bit farther, but I don’t want anyone to know I was in your car," Gaius requested.
Initially hesitant, I decided to drive and parked a short distance from the Crimson Moon tribe.
"What brings you here?" I inquired. Gaius smiled and asked, "How is Anna?"
Sensing something was off, I didn’t mention Bella and instead asked, "Why do you think I have her?"
"I overheard your conversation with my Alpha, and I know Anna is innocent," Gaius revealed, sparking a glimmer of hope. "Let me guess, you’re the protective wolf?"
He hesitated but eventually informed me, "Alpha Zion, I can see that you have changed, and I hope my secret will die with you. All that matters is for Anna to be protected."
Words failed me as I took a good look at him. "If you believe in her innocence, why is it so hard for you to convince your Alpha?" I asked seriously. He stared helplessly at me.
"Alpha Zach only believes in facts, and I know that even his wolf is having a hard time dealing with him. There have been a lot of witchcraft manipulations, and even though the main culprits have been sent out, it’s still difficult to undo the things they’ve done."
Now Zach’s actions were understood. He’s under some kind of spell. "If so, then why isn’t the life of other tribe members affected?" I asked seriously. Gaius shook his head.
He was among the people who stood by Zach after I banished him. "All the manipulations are against Anna. There has been some kind of swap I don’t understand, making Alpha Zach hate her, but I’m still trying to get to the bottom of it. It’s just not easy."
With someone like him around Zach, I was hopeful that one day he would come to his senses, so I asked, "What do you know about Iris’s death?"
Silence enveloped us before he spoke up. "Until I find her body, I won’t believe she’s dead. Even your sister Ivy can’t be trusted, but who am I to point it out to the Alpha? He loves Iris so much."
Sorrow filled my heart to know that Zach had someone like this by his side and still refused to see the truth but I couldn’t just trust Gaius like that so I tested him.
"Since you believe your Alpha is in the wrong, why not help me overthrow him?" I asked curiously.
