Chapter 38: You let Annabelle down (Beta Gaius)

Chapter 38: You let Annabelle down (Beta Gaius)

The pain I endured made me cry, not for myself but for her. I was already ashamed that I couldn’t save her from the brazen bull, but luckily, the crimson moon did.

However, once it was over, Alpha Zach instructed us to either find and kill her or bring her before him for execution.

Something inside me insisted that she was innocent, and I felt a strange connection to her that I couldn’t explain.

Pain pierced through me when I saw her about to be molested by those filthy rogues. Unfortunately, they were unaware of her true identity, or they wouldn’t have dared.

Even I was not in a position to wipe her shoes, but Alpha Zach condemned her.

How could I blame him when there was so much black magic at work? I have tried to counter some of it, but being the only one of my kind here, my abilities are limited.

The Alpha was adamant about not taking suggestions from just one right-hand man, making it challenging for me to convince him. I am partly aware of Reid and Kari’s intentions, but if I inform the Alpha, his anger will consume him before I can gather more details about what they are planning.

For a moment, I thought I wouldn’t be able to endure the pain, as it was one gruesome experience after another, but eventually, it began to lessen. However, I would still occasionally feel it until the Alpha returned.

When he insisted on seeing every werewolf’s wolf, I had to find a way, and the only option was Jack.

"Beta Gaius, what are you doing here?" He asked when he saw me in front of his house.

"Let’s talk inside," I said seriously. He obliged, and as soon as I entered, I slapped him hard in the face.

"What have I done?" He asked with fear in his eyes. I glared at him. "You let Annabelle down. Couldn’t you have sneaked in a little water for her?"

If she had eaten or drunk some water while being subjected to the brazen bull, she wouldn’t have collapsed on the way, though I would have still caught up to her and those useless rogues wouldn’t have been able to touch her.

Due to the investigations, Alpha Zach was always with me so I could not show the slightest sign that I cared for her.

"I’m sorry, Beta Gaius, but it’s Kari. She gave me something to drink, and since then, I’ve never been in my right mind," he said with remorse, I couldn’t blame him.

It was Kari again. "I love Anna, but I let her down. I’m so sorry," he apologized, my anger dissipated.

"It’s alright. You can still make it up to her," I reassured him as he stared at me in shock. "How?"

"You have to help me, and it has to be a secret."

After explaining the plan to him, we left together and met Reid halfway. "What are you doing here?" I inquired, and he heaved a sigh of relief. "I came to get him. The Alpha asked for him."

He was referring to Jack, and I signaled to him that we needed to stay close to each other.

As a protective wolf, there were some powers I could access, but not many because I hadn’t shifted for so long.

The second time I shifted was when I helped Anna escape. I am a Lycan, and beings like us are viewed as a threat. Only the Dire wolf would be able to save my kind, and I suspected she was Anna.

Her strength and resilience were unmatched, and my father instructed me to find her at all costs. Not only would she save the Lycan King, but she would also marry his mysterious son, and the Lycans could once again rise from the ashes.

Given the circumstances, she hadn’t manifested either, and Alpha Zach would just destroy us if he found out so early. I was also finding it hard to connect Anna with the red-haired girl Alpha Zach was looking for, and if she happens to be his mate, then I don’t know what would happen to my kind.

Still, I was determined to protect her at all costs, enduring all the pain I was taking on her behalf until it stopped completely. At that moment, I knew Alpha Zach had left. My mark on her would disappear, and I wouldn’t be able to feel her again.

There is also good news. Now, Alpha Zach will be bearing her pains for as long as she remains alive, and as much as I respect and love him, I still feel he deserves it for allowing himself to be manipulated by those he holds dear.

’It’s time,’ I mindlinked Jack when Alpha Zach commanded me to shift. After using my powers to switch off the lights, I escaped to the back, and Jack shifted in my place.

It was common for werewolves to have the same kind of wolf, but Jack’s wolf was a little strange. Nevertheless, he saved my ass, but hearing about a miscarriage got me worried.

If Anna was indeed pregnant, did it mean she wasn’t the mate of the mysterious Lycan King’s only son? I heard that he had just one child. Some said it was a girl, others said it was a son, but no one knows for sure.

Still, the news of Anna’s pregnancy disturbed me greatly, but not as much as what Kari said. "Zach, I’m pregnant, and I don’t want to leave your side."

Even though I knew she wasn’t the woman our Alpha slept with, I was shocked that she was pinning her pregnancy on him. Kari and Reid, their end will be more terrible.

"You are what?" Alpha Zach’s deep voice and cold penetrating gaze caused her to take fearful steps back. "Zach, you are scaring me."

"We shall talk about this again," he said before walking in the direction of his office. The three of us followed, and he questioned Jack.

"You were Annabelle’s supervisor. Tell me, who was she close to?"

"No one. I was the only one she related well with because the other omegas never liked her."

"So you mean you didn’t help her..." his voice trailed off. "Did I see your wolf?" He asked suspiciously, I feared that he must have made us out.

"Yes, Alpha, it’s a sanguine wolf," he said, a relieved sigh escaping me. Sanguine wolves were the most common so no one will know he was the one with the strange wolf.

"Alright, you and Reid can go."

As soon as they left, Alpha Zach demanded of me, "What evidence do you have concerning Kari?"

I opened his drawer and retrieved the documents. "Alpha, I found out Kari has been dyeing her hair with a special herb in her shampoo. Whenever she uses it, her hair becomes red."

His expression hardened and his jaws clenched. "So, she’s not the one, and yet she’s pregnant. Find out who is responsible."

"Alpha, I will tell you, but you have to be strong and keep it a secret because they are up to something, and I want to nail them and know exactly what it is," I pleaded politely, he nodded, though anger resonated in his voice.

"You have my word."

"Alpha, Kari is Gamma Reid’s mate," I revealed, his expression was the darkest I ever saw.
