Chapter 27: The reason for her rapid healing (Alpha Zion)
As much as I adored Bella, my instinct to protect her at all costs surprised me. It was a strange feeling, yet I couldn’t shake the need to shield her from any discomfort.
Every part of me yearned to be by her side, to shield her from harm, and even my wolf seemed to agree, despite the constant reminder that she wasn’t our mate.
Bella was everything I desired, but she wasn’t mine. Still, I held onto the hope that one day she would choose to be with me. Her presence alone quelled any desire for another she-wolf, yet the nagging question of whether my true mate would appear lingered in my mind.
Despite my deep connection with Bella, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that she was keeping something from me. Her actions on the treadmill were unprecedented, and she seemed unaware of the significance of what she was doing.
If it weren’t for the timer I had set, I wouldn’t have known that she had run at the highest speed on the treadmill without showing any signs of fatigue, which scared me.
Everyone, including me, had limits, and no one was as fast as Bella. Her obliviousness to her own abilities was convincing, so I decided to overlook it.
While her speed could be an asset to the tribe, I didn’t want it to create any future issues, which is why I tested her by threatening to send her away.
However, her question made me ponder whether I should reveal who Zach really was. Even I couldn’t defeat him, but everyone has a weakness, and that’s why the moon goddess is the wisest.
"Mom once told me about a prophecy that accompanied our birth, foretelling the one who would become the Alpha, the strongest," I informed Bella, sparking her interest, so I continued. After all, she was now a member of my tribe with my blood running through her veins.
If she ever betrays me, it will turn into poison and kill her. That was the only valuable thing Mom left for us before she departed following my banishment of Zach.
"Growing up, Zachary was the fastest, and I always came in second. I was always in his shadow, but believe me, I loved him dearly and still do."
"Something must have caused the rift," she hinted, indicating that she had already heard the rumors.
"Well, Zach was fast and strong, but not like this. Everything changed on our twelfth birthday. Zach and I were allowed to join the warriors for an attack for the first time, and he was targeted by the enemies."
Everyone knew that the snake was not ordinary, and a power stronger than we expected wanted him dead. "We were all caught up in our battles, and before we realized it, Zach had fallen, and his color turned blue."
I couldn’t help but notice the confusion on Bella’s face, but perhaps it would clear up when I finish explaining it to her.
"I went in search of a healer with some other warriors, and it took us almost a week without finding one. When we returned, Zach was gone.
We searched everywhere but could not find him. Everyone wondered where he could have gone in his injured state. That was when one of the warriors informed us that a red-haired girl had taken him to the witches’ coven."
"Are you sure about this?" Bella’s urgent voice interrupted, making me suspicious. "Unless you know the story better than me." I wondered how much she must have heard from the tribe members, but she composed herself and gave me all her attention.
"Sorry, just curiosity," her excuse was not convincing, but I continued nonetheless.
"When we arrived, we learned that the red-haired girl had knelt for seven days without food or water to obtain the elixir for his healing. It was later revealed that the elixir had actually made him stronger."
Bella’s expression shifted, her face paling, so I inquired, "Are you feeling okay? We can call it a day if you’re not well. You seemed fine on the treadmill, but now you look exhausted."
She weakly smiled and explained, "I have speed, but without my wolf, I tire quickly after exertion. A good sleep helps me recover."
It made sense to me, and it might explain why she slept for three days straight after we rescued her.
"You should go rest," I suggested, but she declined. "No, you mentioned the elixir strengthened Alpha Zach. How?" I noticed that as she spoke, the faint mark on the other side of her neck seemed to glow, and suddenly, her appearance brightened.
"How are you feeling now?" I inquired. She smiled, "Completely fine. In fact, I haven’t felt this good in a long time."
There was something puzzling about that mark, and I had a hunch that it was the reason for her rapid healing. If Bella was drawing power from this protective wolf, I was curious to know more about him.
"Bella, I believe I know why you’re healing so quickly," I revealed, sparking her interest. "How? Please, tell me."
Realizing I had been sharing a lot without receiving much in return, I decided to lay down a condition. "You must first disclose who the protective wolf is, or I won’t reveal any more."
Sorrow clouded her expression, but I was determined to uncover more about her. "Alpha Zion, I’m sorry, I can’t tell you. It’s a breach of trust." My disappointment was evident.
What was the point of one-sided trust anyway? I couldn’t take it anymore and as much as I tried to hide it, my anger dominated everything. "In that case, this conversation is over."
As I turned to leave, she hastily grabbed my arm and knelt down. "Alpha Zion, if you tell me everything about Alpha Zach, I promise to share a secret I haven’t told anyone."
Her request stirred something within me, but my focus remained on the protective wolf. What information could she provide to dispel my interest in it?
