Chapter 57: This boy was Hanuel’s kid!
As they pulled up to the mansion at the top of the hill, Haeun spotted Taeun’s car already parked in the driveway. He let out an exasperated groan, slumping back in his seat. "That little fucker! He came ahead of time to get in their good graces and act pitiful," Haeun muttered, rolling his eyes.
Yeongsoo raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything, amused by Haeun’s sudden frustration.
Haeun turned to him with urgency. "Grab the fruit basket and hurry up! My umma likes good-looking people, and with your face, Taeun won’t stand a chance." There was a mischievous glint in his eyes as he nudged Yeongsoo toward the car door.
Yeongsoo chuckled, shaking his head as he opened the door and stepped out. "I’ll do my best to charm them.." grabbing the basket as he did.
"Don’t hurry, the weather gets cold at night. You need to make sure you’re covered up. Why did you decide to wear shorts? At least you’re wearing socks." Yeongsoo nagged as he zipped up the shirt and grabbed Haeun’s hands.
Unbeknownst to them, Taekjoon watched them from the window of the mansion, his sharp eyes taking in every detail. Taekjoon stood in the living room, arms crossed, his expression unreadable as he watched his eldest son bicker lightly with an unfamiliar man. From behind the glass, Taekjoon observed the dynamic between them, noting the way the young man fussed over Haeun, making sure he was covered up properly.
There was a tenderness in the way the young man moved around Haeun, an instinctive care that didn’t go unnoticed.
Taekjoon lips curved into a small smile, a knowing one. He had always been a keen observer of people, and right now, watching his son with this young man, it was clear as day what kind of relationship they had.
"He’s grown so much," Taekjoon whispered to himself, feeling both pride and a small pang of nostalgia. Haeun wasn’t his little boy anymore, yet it was comforting to see him so cared for.
"Aiya...Joon what are you looking at, get your ass this way and help me set the table. Hae will be here with the young man soon.."
Taekjoon smiled and walked away from the window "Coming Honey.."
Inside the house, Taeun was already seated at the table, lazily munching on the fresh grapefruits laid out. It had been two years since he’d come home, and although the atmosphere was warm and familiar, something about coming back alone, without a partner by his side, made his heart feel a bit heavier.
Minho came bustling in from the kitchen carrying a plate of stir-fried mushrooms. "Tae, do you still dislike mushrooms? You were always such a picky eater," he teased, placing the dish in front of Taeun.
Taeun made a face, pushing the plate away slightly. "Can I not eat it if I don’t like it?" he grumbled, reaching for more grapefruits.
Minho tsked, setting his hands on his hips. "Children should eat their vegetables. If I didn’t take such good care of you, how would you have gotten this tall? Aiya, Joon, these kids are becoming more and more willful by the day! They don’t even call their own parents or come home for dinner anymore. Especially that brat Haeun... if it weren’t for his ’special condition,’ I would’ve chased him around with a feather duster."
"Umma, you’re already so old, you can’t keep nagging this much." Taeun retorted, half-teasing, though there was affection in his tone.
Minho swatted him lightly on the arm, but there was no real heat behind it. "Having you forgotten there’s a feather duster with your name in the closet?"
"..."
Taeun immediately composed himself, he couldn’t believe that goddamn feather duster was still in the house.
"Umma! You brought that feather duster here!!"
Minho chuckled, his weapons of discipline why wouldn’t he bring them along?
"Of course, Hae’s feather duster is also next to yours.."
"...."
"Umma, you are planning to beat dad with those feather dusters??"
As they turned to their direction, Yeongsoo bowed deeply, his demeanor shifting to one of respect. "Good evening, mother-in-law, father-in-law. I’m Cheon Yeongsoo," he introduced himself, his voice steady and warm.
Minho’s eyes lit up at the sight of them. "Ah, Haeun, you finally brought him home! It’s nice to meet you, Yeongsoo," he said, stepping forward with an inviting smile.
"Thank you, sir. It’s a pleasure to meet you too," Yeongsoo replied, returning the smile.
"Don’t "sir"me; call me Umma," Minho said, waving her hand dismissively. "Just like Hae does.." he added, glancing at Taeun, who was leaning against the wall with a smirk.
Taeun chuckled, his expression playful. "It’s a pleasure to meet you brother-in-law. It’s good to see Hyung finally opened up about his relationship."
Haeun didn’t say anything and sent a glare at Taeun, plopped down on the couch feeling sleepy.
Yeongsoo laughed lightly. "Thank you. I’ve heard a lot about you all... mostly good things."
"Mostly?" Minho raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms playfully. "Now you’ve piqued my interest. What exactly has that brat told you about us?"
Haeun’s cheeks flushed slightly. "Um, probably just the regular things... you know, how amazing you both are," he replied, trying to deflect the teasing.
"Only amazing?" Minho said dramatically, pretending to be hurt. "I’ll have to teach you to praise us properly, Yeongsoo. We expect nothing less than utmost flattery."
"Got it," Yeongsoo replied with mock concern. "I might need to take notes."
Just then, Taekjoon appeared from the hallway, wiping his hands on a kitchen towel. He surveyed the scene and smiled warmly. "Looks like the party has started. What’s all this fuss about?"
"Just getting to know our guest, Dad,"Taeun said, gesturing to Yeongsoo. "This is Cheon Yeongsoo, hyung’s boyfriend."
"..."
Cheon?! This boy was Hanuel’s kid!
"Haha! Great! That old bastard.."
Everyone looked at Taekjoon with obvious confusion, what was he going on about.
"Let me tell you all a short story, years ago this kid dad and I. He and his boyfriend were going through a rough patch, we were in college at the time. I took to a bar to clear his mind and when I was taking him home. He said one of our children will definitely marry each other. I took it as a joke but 25 years later. His son is calling me father in law"
