Chapter 88: Chapter 88: BRIAR’S PROMISE
When they got inside, because people were still arriving, the banquet hadn’t started yet. So, the guests were busy checking the place around while those who didn’t like doing so, were finding their respective seats.
On Briar’s side, she nudged her mother-in-law, drawing her attention back to her and said to her, "Mother, I need to use to restroom. I am going with Bertha," reporting what she was about to do.
When Madam Meyer heard that the doctor would be with Briar, she readily agreed. At least if anything crops up, Briar won’t suffer. Bertha was now well versed in such functions and she seemed to be someone with a fiery temper. Briar was too meek when facing strangers. She might suffer a loss if ganged upon.
The last time she cried and nearly died just because Alice confronted her. Who knows what might happen if she were to go by herself?
When Briar got the permission, she smiled at Madam Meyer before walking towards Bertha and giving the other a nod.
Shortly, the two newly made friends, in the eyes of the people, left the hall as they headed outside for the restroom.
At that moment, a few ladies saw that and rose to their feet as well, their destination unknown.
On the other side, Briar and Bertha didn’t go to that floor’s restroom, but took the elevator upstairs and got off on a certain floor.
"Are you sure that we have time for this?" Briar asked worriedly as she and Bertha walked away from the elevator.
Bertha snickered as she looked at Briar and answered, "Friend. If you miss this again today, do you know how long you have to wait to get it?" her tone was higher, with a bit of chiding.
Briar rolled her eyes at Bertha, discarding her words and said, "Even if I miss it. Won’t I still get it back?"
"You_"
"Haha, chill out, friend. It’s been a long time since we talked like this, and you are getting angry like that?" Briar seeing that Bertha was getting angry, hurriedly explained as she chuckled dryly.
Bertha looked at this best friend of hers and for a moment wanted to bash her, but then she recalled how the other was still recovering.
"How is your health, anyway?"
Briar grinned as she looked at the other, and Bertha upon seeing that, her face twitched.
"You .... You can’t be playing games again, right?"
"Hahaha, friend. I never knew being sick was this good" As she spoke, Briar’s eyes shone, "I don’t have to do anything, nowadays. And when I groan or gasp, all attention will be on me. Damn, if I knew, I should have done something like this sooner!"
Pa!
When Bertha heard that, she slapped Briar on the head, making the naughty younger woman cry out in grievance.
"Why did you do that?" Briar aggrievedly asked as she rubbed her head.
Bertha angrily looked at Briar, who dared joke with her life and berated, "If you try something like that again. I will expose you to Logan. Let us see if you will have the guts to face him again!" her tone was very serious. It made Briar shudder with fear.
There was nothing that she feared more than having her true self exposed to Logan. She would rather die than show that.
Seeing Briar’s reaction, Bertha snickered, knowing that her friend’s weakness was still useful. She shocked the heck out of them because of that crazy attempt.
"Bertha, you _" Briar wanted to say something, to defend herself. However, Bertha as if knowing what she would say cut her before she could say much.
"Briar, I don’t care what kind of psychotic thoughts are in that head of yours. You can go around, plunder, commit arson or kill anyone, but never cause yourself harm. Unless it’s necessary. If I wasn’t at the hospital, do you have any idea of what might have happened to you?"
Briar didn’t dare respond. She lowered her head as her pace decreased, guilt overwhelming her.
"When I saw you, you looked bloodied and, for a moment, I thought I was going to lose you. I was so scared, and I didn’t dare let anyone else operate on you, though it wasn’t supposed to be my operation. You ...."
The more she listened, the more it dawned on her, the pressure, fear, and trauma she instilled in others because of her selfish desires. However, if she were to return to that moment again, she would still repeat the same process. However, she wouldn’t let Bertha know, otherwise, she would be beaten and suffer so much without any proof of suffering as such.
Bertha looked at Briar, whose head was lowered and felt her heart pang. She couldn’t help but soften. It wasn’t easy for Briar to lower herself like that and accept being berated.
Considering the kind of day, it was, Bertha decided to tone it down.
"Next time, just tell us beforehand if you want to try some tricks like that. We will come up with something more effective, without putting any life at risk." Bertha softened her tone as she said that.
She didn’t want to go through the same pain again.
When Briar heard that, she raised her head with a faint smile on her face, guilt written all over her face.
"I swear to not try something like that again without telling you!" she earnestly said, but didn’t promise to not do it again.
After all, she had no idea what kind of obstacle was coming her way and what kind of measures might be needed to tackle it.
Bertha also understood Briar’s meaning. She didn’t retort, but nodded, accepting this. At least, she won’t do it without them knowing. That was much better than what had happened before.
"Okay. You said it!"
Briar grinned sheepishly as she nodded while grabbing onto Bertha’s arm, saying, "I said it!"
Bertha’s eyes narrowed slyly as she said to Briar, "You better keep your word. If you don’t, you know!"
Briar didn’t need to be reminded twice. She nodded her head like a chicken pecking on rice.
Bertha, seeing that, smiled satisfactorily and led Briar to the room they were supposed to go.
As for those ladies who were following the two, stood like idiots in the restroom wondering where the others had gone.
Just how fast could two ladies wearing heels go?
