Chapter 319: Chapter 319: Mother-Daughter Showdown
Pei Liyan and Qiao Rui brought Fang Mo and Si Ran to the hospital together, with Pei Liyan instructing Si Ran to prepare high-end gifts.
Fang Mo was jittery throughout the trip, not daring to speak, nor even glancing at Pei Liyan.
Pei Liyan hadn’t really reprimanded him, but precisely this unspoken tension made the atmosphere terrifyingly cold, leaving Fang Mo’s heart hanging in dread, fearful of being punished by the president.
Once they arrived at the hospital, Pei Liyan told Fang Mo and Si Ran to wait in the car, while he and Qiao Rui went upstairs first.
When they reached the door of the hospital room, Mrs. Song happened to be inside.
Both Qiao Rui and Pei Liyan could hear Mrs. Song questioning Song Muyu.
For the moment, they tacitly decided not to enter.
Inside the hospital room.
Song Muyu stiffened again, pressing her dry, cracked lips together before softly murmuring, "Mom, I’m sorry!"
"Sorry?" Mrs. Song’s voice suddenly sharpened, almost roaring before letting out a cold, sarcastic laugh, her eyes glinting with icy disdain.
After a brief pause, Mrs. Song finally said, "You should certainly say sorry, but that alone isn’t enough. You need to repent."
Song Muyu’s body stiffened, her face alternating between flushed and pale as her heart throbbed with pain.
If falling in love with someone was a mistake, then she had indeed erred.
Her mistake lay in loving the son of her adoptive parents—her nominal brother.
This was indeed a disgraceful matter.
But she had never regretted it.
Pressing her lips together, Song Muyu remained silent, ready to let her mother berate her.
She believed this was all a punishment she deserved.
"You’ve betrayed the kindness of my upbringing and disgraced the Song Family’s reputation," Mrs. Song rebuked coldly. "I raised you to adulthood, only for you to debase yourself like this?"
Song Muyu’s face burned as her entire complexion turned bright red. "Mom, I’m sorry to have disappointed you."
The matter of her pregnancy and miscarriage was the last thing she wanted Mrs. Song to discover, yet it had come to light.
"Does Jiang Jinfeng intend to take responsibility for this?" Mrs. Song asked sternly.
Song Muyu froze, instinctively raising her eyes to Mrs. Song. "Mom, I..."
She didn’t know how to respond. This had nothing to do with Jinfeng.
Mrs. Song shot her a sharp, piercing glare, her voice biting as she continued, "He won’t take responsibility, will he? He doesn’t want you, does he? Even when you throw yourself at him, he still doesn’t want you, is that it?"
Indeed, even throwing herself at him would be futile.
But the one who didn’t want her was Song Xun, not Jinfeng.
She and Jinfeng were good friends—like siblings, they were partners, close as family.
"Mom, I understand I’ve let you down, but I’ll handle this myself. Please don’t worry."
"You think you can handle it? How do you plan to handle it?" Mrs. Song’s tone grew sharper yet.
Song Muyu’s chest tightened, but she still softly said, "Mom, I’ve grown up."
"Oh, grown up, now have you? Grown up enough to hide things from us, secretly fraternize with men, get pregnant, miscarry, almost lose your life in the process, and still forbid me from intervening? You’ve indeed grown up, Song Muyu. Is this the kind of daughter I raised?"
Mrs. Song’s voice was loud, her words harsh and cutting, so much so that Qiao Rui, who was standing outside, couldn’t bear to restrain herself and wanted to burst in.
Pei Liyan grabbed her wrist, stopping her from entering.
Qiao Rui turned around, her reddened eyes meeting Pei Liyan’s calm gaze.
He gently shook his head at her.
Qiao Rui pressed her lips together, still inclined to force her way inside.
Pei Liyan pulled her into his arms, her face buried against his chest, as she whispered softly, "Is this what a mother does? How can she stab her daughter with barbed words like this?"
Pei Liyan murmured in her ear, "Miss Song has her own judgment. She needs the time and space to face things independently."
Qiao Rui froze, her gaze lifting to meet his, where she found unyielding sincerity.
Momentarily stunned, she nodded slightly.
In truth, Qiao Rui understood that Muyu needed to make her own choices.
But Pei Liyan, standing as an outsider, seemed to have a level of clarity and composure that struck her deeply, reminding her not to act impulsively.
Inside the hospital room.
Following a moment of suffocating silence.
Song Muyu softly apologized, "Mom, I’m sorry for failing to repay your kindness."
"Since you’re aware that you’ve betrayed my trust, then get yourself together and start preparing. Once your health recovers, I’ll arrange a suitable match for you—a marriage alliance," Mrs. Song said expressionlessly.
Song Muyu froze, momentarily stunned. "Mom, you still want me to marry into an alliance?"
"Of course," Mrs. Song replied. "Since you can’t take responsibility for your own life, I’ll take responsibility for it instead."
"No!" Song Muyu instinctively shook her head in refusal. "I don’t want it."
"Don’t want it?" Mrs. Song immediately became angry. "Do you even have the audacity to say you don’t want it? Look at the mess you’ve made!"
"Mom, I admit this situation is my fault." Song Muyu couldn’t deny it, but when it came to an arranged marriage, she was resolute in her opposition.
She hadn’t expected Mrs. Song would come to the hospital after her near-fatal bleeding to discuss arranging a marriage for her. The timing left Song Muyu feeling bitterly cold.
"I won’t agree to an arranged marriage," Song Muyu said, shaking her head firmly. "I’ve made mistakes in my life, but I won’t continue making them. Nor do I want to bring an unhappy marriage and life to an innocent man."
"So what you’re saying is, you don’t plan to marry at all?" Mrs. Song countered.
Song Muyu shook her head. "Not at all. What happens in my future is something for the future. I don’t want to make too many promises right now. If I meet the right person someday, I might get married and start a family, but at the moment, I have no interest in relationships, especially arranged ones with strangers and unfamiliar families."
Mrs. Song let out another cold laugh. "Ha! Muyu, are you saying you don’t want to get married now... or are you waiting for someone?"
Song Muyu was taken aback, confused as she looked at her mother.
Her mother’s face looked unusually sharp, glaring at her with an icy chill—a gaze as if poisoned arrows were being shot directly at her.
She had never seen such an expression on her mother’s face before; it was hard to accept, leaving her staring at Mrs. Song in stunned disbelief.
"Does Jiang Jinfeng plan to take responsibility?" Mrs. Song asked again.
Song Muyu remained silent.
She feared that no matter what she said, it would only make things worse.
"You’re too scared to respond now, aren’t you?" Mrs. Song sneered, as though she had uncovered Muyu’s weakness. "Feeling guilty, are we?"
Song Muyu felt a sharp pang in her chest—her heart aching.
Indeed, she felt guilty and ashamed.
"Because the child you were carrying wasn’t Jiang Jinfeng’s at all!" Mrs. Song said gravely.
Song Muyu froze in shock, panic stirring within her.
She looked at Mrs. Song and said, "Mom, I never claimed the child was Jinfeng’s. He’s just a friend to me—a friend with great character."
"Oh, yes, he’s got excellent character. The one without character is your brother, Song Xun," Mrs. Song said with a sharp laugh, her voice turning shriller. "He got his own sister pregnant, and his sister is doing everything in her power to cover for him. What a perfect pair of siblings you two are!"
