Chapter 320: Chapter 320: Rather Die than Obey
Song Muyu’s shoulders slumped, and she froze in shock.
Only now did she understand—her mother must have already learned the truth.
Last night, Jinfeng and Qi Yun’s evasive responses were probably because of this.
So they’ve known all along.
They were afraid she’d find out, afraid she’d be hurt, so they chose to hide it kindly.
Song Muyu let out a bitter laugh.
"You still have the nerve to laugh?" Mrs. Song’s face was full of scorn, her tone dripping with mockery.
Song Muyu had never seen her mother so furious—her words were laced with venom. But she lacked the ability to refute them.
She had indeed made a mistake.
"How could you commit such a depraved act, worse than that of animals?" Mrs. Song berated her. "I raised you so you could seduce your own brother?"
Seduce?
Song Muyu was overwhelmed with embarrassment. She shook her head, wanting to deny it.
But Mrs. Song didn’t give her even a shred of room to speak.
She berated, "You went so far as to have a child with him, then tried desperately to cover it up. Even after a miscarriage, you made sure he’d find out—was it your plan to make him feel guilty forever, to live his life tormented by his conscience?
Song Muyu, what exactly do you want? Do you want to tear apart Song Xun and Shen Shuyi? Does your heart harbor such bitterness?"
"I didn’t!" Song Muyu shook her head. "Mom, I never intended anything like that—I swear, I never have."
"Can you swear you never thought about marrying your brother?" Mrs. Song accused coldly.
Song Muyu couldn’t answer.
She had thought about it.
Not just once—many times. She had wished she could become Song Xun’s wife, wished she could stay with the Song Family forever, repaying them for raising her.
But those were all delusions.
"Mom, now that everything has come to light, I have nothing left to hide. I did wish I could marry my brother and stay in the Song Family for the rest of my life—but the moment I miscarried, that delusion turned into despair. I will never entertain such thoughts again."
"Who can tell if what you’re saying is true?" Mrs. Song’s expression remained dark, and she did not spare her daughter.
Song Muyu closed her eyes and murmured softly, "I will leave here, return to Qingcheng, and I won’t come back."
"Ha! You think you can walk away from everything, leaving us in turmoil?"
"Mom, what do you want me to do then?" Song Muyu tried to maintain her patience and asked.
"Marriage. You’ll marry someone I choose for you," Mrs. Song said seriously. "Only then will I believe you’re truly severing ties with your brother."
Song Muyu was stunned.
The shame she already felt after her mother found out about her and Song Xun was overwhelming; she avoided facing her mother out of guilt.
Yet she hadn’t expected her mother would make such a demand of her.
It turned out that everything revolved around a marriage alliance—to bolster the Song Family’s status.
In her mother’s eyes, she held no weight.
Neither did Song Xun, apparently.
She had been too naïve to assume that her mother loved her deeply, loved her brother deeply as well.
But considering this marriage alliance, her mother’s love appeared reserved solely for the Song Family’s honor.
The Song Family’s standing in Liancheng—everything else was disregarded.
People only reveal their true colors in times of crisis.
The Song Family was in trouble, and Mrs. Song showed her true self.
"Mom!" Song Muyu steadied herself, looked up at her mother, and asked softly, "Was securing a marriage alliance the sole reason you came to the hospital today?"
Mrs. Song hesitated for a moment, looking into Song Muyu’s pale face and seeing the bitterness and defiance in her clear, black-and-white eyes.
"Is it so wrong?" Mrs. Song retorted, her tone cutting. "The Song Family is in crisis—it’s time for you to contribute."
"To contribute to the Song Family is my duty," Song Muyu said softly. "I’ve never shied away—it has always been my responsibility."
"If that’s the case, then focus on recovering and prepare yourself. I’ll find a suitable husband for you," Mrs. Song reiterated.
"That’s impossible." Song Muyu shook her head firmly and declared with conviction, "I won’t agree to this marriage alliance."
"So you still plan to sabotage Song Xun and Shen Shuyi’s relationship?" Mrs. Song questioned coldly.
"Even though what happened with my brother was a mistake, I’m not shameless or devoid of principles. I lost control—it was love that drove me. I did fall for my own brother, and I’m deeply ashamed, embarrassed, and overwhelmed by it.
But now that everything is in the open, I feel a sense of relief. Since you already know about this, you should also understand—I will not agree to any marriage alliance."
"That won’t be up to you." Mrs. Song grimaced, her tone becoming anxious.
Song Muyu let out a bitter smile and said, "You came today with a step-by-step plan—you brought up my miscarriage, then talked about Jinfeng’s irresponsibility, then proposed a marriage alliance. When I refused, you used my brother to pressure me into agreement.
I know I’m deeply sinful, but even so, I still have my dignity.
I won’t drag another stranger into this mess and make them suffer for a lifetime. I won’t consent to any marriage alliance—for the rest of my life."
"Are you trying to drive me insane?" Mrs. Song was trembling with rage. "Haven’t you hurt me enough already?"
"Mom, you’re seasoned in weathering storms—these matters won’t break you." Song Muyu said slowly, each word deliberate. "You have countless strategies; you won’t be stuck because of this."
"So you’re determined to refuse my arrangement?" Mrs. Song asked coldly.
Without hesitation, Song Muyu nodded. "Yes, I will not agree."
"Then prepare to face the wrath of the Shen Family!" Mrs. Song shot to her feet, her expression distorted with anger.
Song Muyu felt an agonizing pain in her heart, as though it might suffocate her.
She understood—what had happened put her in the wrong, left her morally compromised.
But she also knew that this mistake didn’t mean she had to agree to a marriage alliance—to compound one error with another.
That would be unfair to another man—like desecrating him.
She couldn’t do it.
But her mother threatened to let the Shen Family deal with her.
She let out a bitter smile and said softly, "If you believe the Shen Family hearing about this won’t impact our alliance, then go ahead and tell Miss Shen."
"You—you dare threaten me?" Mrs. Song was momentarily startled.
"I wouldn’t dare," Song Muyu shook her head. "I’m merely rejecting this arrangement."
"And if I absolutely force you to agree?" Mrs. Song trembled with anger.
"I’m sorry!" Song Muyu shook her head and said softly, "I’d rather die than comply."
"You!" Mrs. Song sucked in a sharp breath, and in a moment of frustration, raised her hand and slapped her.
A loud slap echoed, and Song Muyu stumbled backward, landing on the sofa.
Qiao Rui could no longer hold back and shoved the door open.
Pei Liyan didn’t stop her this time and simply followed her in.
The two stood at the door, taking in the scene inside.
Qiao Rui’s eyes glinted like icy glaciers, radiating cold fury as she stared at Mrs. Song.
