Chapter 24: A RAY OF HOPE
CONRI’S POV
A life of solitude hardened my heart for the past fifteen years of being exiled. The woods became my solace of peace, and it calmed my body. My wolf was free to run, and my powers grew every year. For the first years in the woods, I worked to rebuild the rotten cabin up to the standard warm cabin. It kept me busy for six months as I worked to distract myself from the pain in my heart. Old man Benjamin was daring enough to offer me all the supplies that I needed. Hence, I picked them up at the foot of the mountain every week, as agreed.
Then I discovered the Tizheruk Snake Serpent King.
Dolf, my Alpha wolf, had sensed him a mile away, and we shifted and evaded it because looking into his eyes, one got petrified, forgetting everything that happened a few hours before.
A week later, I found it, at its near death by the riverbank after unknown persons spilled toxic waste. I raced back to the cabin, got a sack, rushed back to the river bank, and put it in the sack. I dragged it to the other side of the river, deep in the cave mountain, and put the Tizheruk it in the clean water.
I sat and waited for an hour, watched it come alive, and I closed my eyes, afraid of being petrified by it.
"Calm down Alpha, I have no interest in petrifying my savior," it hissed.
My eyes snapped open, and I stared at it in shock. "You can speak?"
It continued to roll into the water and said, "Of course. Do you have any food in your cabin?"
"I will be back with food in an hour," I stated and left the cave. I undressed, shifted, and rushed to old Benjamin’s pub, arriving when it was almost dark. Circling back to the pub, I found some clothes that were hung and I pulled the jeans on, and heard Benjamin’s voice reach my ears. "Why are you wearing my clothes, Conri?"
Turning back to face him, I spoke. "I need food. Seafood. Lots of it. Give me all you have and bill it to Godmother. Please,"
Benjamin raised his eyebrow but never pressed further and complied after hearing my pleading voice. He came back with a sack of food and a warm jacket. I left the pub and trekked up the mountain and got to the cave at almost midnight. I dumped all the food by the side of the river and the Tizheruk got out of the water to eat.
"I will be back in the morning to check up on you," I spoke in hushed tones and left the cave.
I had overslept and arrived late afternoon the next day back in the cafe only to find the food, and the Tizheruk was gone. It was a month later when Dolf felt the Tizheruk’s presence by the river bank, and on arrival found it swimming leisurely.
"You disappeared," I muttered.
"What is your name, Alpha? "Tizheruk’s voice reached my ears.
"Conri Dolf "I stated.
"You saved me, Conri. As a reward, I will grant your wolf the power of transformation." I felt the Tizheruk pushed through my mind and my body buzzed with power.
I could only gasp as it continued to say. " To live in harmony, we shall keep the shifters hunters out of the mountain. I saw two of them last week and I guess that they want you dead. Help me keep the river clean and I will offer you protection.
I nodded in acceptance.
" Why do they want you dead? "The Tizheruk asked.
"What is a Tizheruk doing in the Alaska mountains?" I responded with a question.
"Fair enough. We have our secrets" and it dove back into the river and swam down the river.
Since then, my mind has been at ease about hunters. I built the hedge in the forest and closed it off any path that would lead any shifters to my cabin. Planting trees and making it harder to trek up the mountain while the Tizheruk petrified anyone who came near the mountains for the past fifteen years.
That was until I attended the Golden Shifter Pack annual dinner which was part of the agreement of the KODA council to keep me in check. While the rest of the pack stayed clear of my path, one man walked over to greet me. He was handsome, shorter than me, with hazel eyes, and broad shoulders, and I sense the power of his wolf.
"Hi, I am Lucian Freki, " The little pup extended his hand in greetings.
All my senses rose to the surface as Dolf, my wolf’s eyes snapped open and he watched with keen interest. Dolf immediately informed me that he was a Freki Wolf. A powerful wolf with an ancient bloodline.
After the event, Lucian sneaked into the woods, past the Tizheruk, and reached my cabin, much to my surprise. I watched him cook and sensed his lust for me. Lucian was shameless and naughty, but Dolf rose to the surface and he whispered, "Hope"
It was like a breath of fresh air as he rummaged through my kitchen cabinet after pressing his mouth on mine and rubbing our cocks together. Early the next day, after my morning run, he attacked me to test the power of Dolf. The strength of his Freki wolf surprised and angered me. No wonder the Tizheruk watched him from a distance, letting him pass since he was not a threat to me.
Angry because Dolf had announced that he wanted to mate with Freki. Fear rose, making me push him away, and ended up regretting the hurt look on his face. I felt it was for his good. How could a wolf who had been exiled dare dream of being with someone like him?
He offered me a job, thawing my stony heart again, and I could not resist the offer. I lied to myself when I said that I had accepted the proposal inorder to clear my name, but Dolf wanted to be close to him. Godmother was waiting for me at Old Benjamin’s pub a week later, with Benjamin and Ralph Isla. It surprised me when Luna Elijah joined in.
"Lucian, my child, I have a proposal for you. We think you should get into a contract marriage with Lucian Freki." Godmother spoke up.
"No" was the first word that came to my mouth, but Dolf rose to the surface in happiness.
"Yes," she asserted.
"We have Lucian to back you up, giving you a chance to investigate the old case," Benjamin advised.
"Let it go," I suggested.
"I will not have my godson living in exile anymore. "Godmother Zaya banged the table in anger.
"Conri, we need to prepare you for the KODA council meeting tomorrow. Lucian was summoned and I suspect they are doing this because of what happened at the Golden Shifter Annual dinner, plus the fact that he fired Carter," Raph Isla stated.
My eyes widened, and I felt my throat dry up.
"You will not let them harm him, "Dolf, my wolf growled, and I felt it rumble deep within my chest.
