Chapter 855: Chapter 477: Beef Jerky and Western Food
With a big group of girls helping out, Boss Yan Fei had it really easy. He just sat back and acted like part of the scenery, while Xu Xiaoyan and a few other girls took care of introducing things to the visitors.
Next to them were promotional posters, and the table even had several copies of newspapers from the day they had advertised Sancha River beef.
You would know whether the product was good once you tried it. Guests were welcome to taste freely, and the prices were no more expensive than others’. The gimmick of having beef sold to Hong Kong was truly appealing. And there was no need to worry about false advertising—featured in the local newspapers, you could say that we had local connections, but there’s also that beef restaurant in Provincial City right there! If anyone doubted, they could go and see for themselves when mealtime came—that restaurant had kept our boss’s pager number!
When there were more people looking, business deals became easier to secure.
Soon, Yan Fei could no longer afford to daydream; a chubby, smiling boss decided on the spot to sign a purchase contract.
This chubby boss hailed from a city called Lian City, not far from Provincial City. He owned two departmental supermarkets and had just had a chat with a group of girls before he decided to sign and stamp the contract and place an order right away.
In fact, not just within the province, but even people from other places also knew about Wan City’s beef. There were a few other beef jerky companies at the trade fair today, but the prices were roughly the same, and some weren’t even located in beef-producing areas, which made Boss Yan’s credibility stand out!
And another reason was, as businesses were local and nearby, establishing a connection mattered more than the size of the deal at the moment. Who knew if one could help the other out in the future?
On a smaller scale, if I’m heading to your city to deal with some matters in a couple of days, we both know business, wouldn’t I get some care if I ran into a small trouble? On the larger scale, if a small business grows and a provincial enterprise seminar is held or, even better, if we might bump into each other at the People’s Congress, isn’t that all about connections?
One of the benefits of being in industry is this: while it might involve more work, it also facilitates the expansion of your social network. There’s a bit of a difference between making a fortune from stock trading while staying at home and becoming a millionaire by running a business at the local level.
In fact, at the trade fair, as it was only its third session, most of the attendees came from within the province. Many business owners who might not have immediate business dealings still exchanged business cards non-stop, knowing any connection made now could come in handy later on.
Lack of closeness wasn’t an issue; it naturally developed after sharing a meal and drinks. A few phone calls and favors later, acquaintances became friends through constant interaction.
It was just Boss Yan Fei who, much like when he first guarded his family’s blacksmith stall, sat in the back and couldn’t bring himself to leave his booth.
However, his youth certainly added to his appeal. Many people were quite intrigued by such a young boss. When Heizi and the others made business cards for the cattle farm, they made two boxes for him, and he handed out quite a few in a short time.
Kidding aside, a young man whose "fur was all grown," was actually successful in selling beef to Hong Kong, and his beef was used by reputable high-end restaurants in Provincial City too. If one claimed he had no connections, few would believe it! And if he truly had no connections, that would be even more astonishing. With such capability at such a young age, what more could he achieve in the future?
After clinching the first order, Miss Xu Xiaoyan wasn’t worried anymore.
Initially, the girl had been quite concerned, fearing retribution for that incident during the previous registration. She had been quite apprehensive. But as the morning session was nearly over without any incidents, she gradually became reassured.
Right after signing the order, that familiar Xiao Li came over again, full of enthusiasm, "Congratulations, congratulations, big congratulations! Boss Yan, you’ve hit the jackpot with this opening! Um, there’s a small favor to ask, we have a task from the higher-ups to gather some statistics about the turnover at this trade fair, for future publicity purposes. You wouldn’t mind, would you?"
There really wasn’t anything secret about it, they just wanted to inquire about the approximate amount of the transactions in the order, so there would be some basis for the newspapers to report later on. After all, it wouldn’t do for a trade fair to end and everybody to know it was a great success, without anyone knowing the total transaction amount—what kind of trade fair would that be?
One of the reasons for Xiao Li’s enthusiasm was that when Yan Fei came to deliver the photos the next day, Xiao Li had already become quite friendly.
With consulting not being very developed yet, the trade fair still needed to maintain a good reputation, and certainly wouldn’t want any scams or deceitful businesses sullying its name. So, once businesses registered, they would generally receive a call for verification.
Being an official is like being a high-ranking officer at the prime minister’s gate; the units in the province wanting to understand more about what’s happening below is not a bad thing. If they couldn’t handle such a small task, they might as well quit their jobs and go sell vegetables at a street stall!
So the next morning, Xiao Li figured out that this little beef business, which he had somewhat looked down upon before, actually had a pretty big local reputation. Most importantly, they were engaged in foreign trade and exporting.
It didn’t matter whether the business was large or small, under the current circumstances, as long as they could sell their products abroad, that was a real skill. There were plenty who were kings of their own little castles at home, but those who could make it out in the world and expand were deserving of attention even at the provincial level, because they were bringing money into the province by selling local products abroad.
In fact, while there were no explicit acknowledgments from above, there were certainly interested parties. Companies that could export products might already have caught the eye of some higher-up, and climbing the ladder to success wouldn’t be out of reach.
It’s hard to predict these sorts of things. Wan City has definitely produced its fair share of outstanding revolutionaries from the older generations, and even now it’s not lacking in rulers. Someday, if one of them suddenly hears that a young man from their hometown has made a name for a local product, who wouldn’t be pleased to hear such news? Just one mention in a moment of happiness, and wouldn’t the people below take note?
In Comrade Xiao Li’s view, enterprises like Boss Yan’s were stocks with potential, turning local specialty products into exports was bound to catch the attention of leadership sooner or later. Therefore, building a good relationship now was essential.
Watching Comrade Xiao Li finish the registration and leave, everyone was overjoyed, and the group of girls, picking up where they had been interrupted by Xiao Li, continued to tease, "Boss Yan, we came all this way to support you, you take care of the rest, okay?"
What else could be said? Boss Yan, with a generous sweep of his hand, announced magnanimously, "Once this ends, everyone will get a packet of beef jerky, come on, I brought plenty..."
"Pssh..." The group of girls hissed at him all at once.
It wasn’t that the beef jerky wasn’t good—it was worth quite a few bucks and was a pretty decent gift. The problem was that everyone had already secretly eaten until they were half full, and now they really didn’t feel like eating anymore.
"How about a Western meal at the foreigner’s restaurant for lunch?" Yan Fei offered another way to show his thanks.
"Really?" The girls’ eyes lit up. "We’ve never had Western food before! Boss Yan, you can’t go back on your word, okay?"
Yan Fei mumbled to himself: A bunch of fools, how much beef is in that meal? Not even as much as one packet of my beef jerky! It’s all meat from the same cow, I offer you a big packet of beef jerky and you don’t want it, but it’s tasty when it’s served in a restaurant?
