Chapter 856: Chapter 478: Talking About Money Hurts Feelings

"A bunch of big fools!" Yan Fei looked at a group of girls who had just come out from eating ’Western food’, still chattering excitedly, and couldn’t help but mutter again under his breath.

"Pfft..." The little dark-skinned girl following behind Yan Fei couldn’t help but laugh. Seeing Yan Fei turn his head to look, she quickly covered her mouth to stifle her laughter and bowed her head in silence.

Next to her, Xu Xiaoyan was also very amused: "Yan Xiaofei, you’re not allowed to call them fools anymore. Talking behind people’s backs is really mean."

Her voice was a bit loud, and Ji Yunyun, who was ahead, turned back and asked, "Xiao Xingxing, who’s speaking ill of others behind their backs?"

Xu Xiaoyan, with supreme calmness, covered for her boyfriend: "A big bad guy, you don’t know him."

"Oh!" Ji Yunyun didn’t think much of it, nodded, and clutched her stomach somewhat depressedly. "Why do I feel like that portion of beef was so small? I always feel like my stomach isn’t full, what should I do?"

"Then let’s not walk; let’s hurry and take a cab home to make something to eat," Xu Xiaoyan said and went to the roadside to hail a cab.

The girls from the little dark-skinned girl’s hometown didn’t let Yan Fei treat them, and now all of them were students. Including Xu Xiaoyan and Yan Fei, there were ten girls and one guy in total. They called a mini-van, and it was so packed that everyone just barely fit inside.

The mini-van, nowadays known as a taxi, was a yellow van. The young driver kept glancing back through the rearview mirror, utterly delighted. Normally, the van had seats for seven, but now, including the driver, there were twelve people. Had it been any other passengers, the driver might have asked for extra money, but with a bunch of lively young college girls, he didn’t even mention it.

The taxi weaved through alleyways, with the young driver explaining as he drove, "Don’t worry, I can’t charge you more for taking a long way. We’re overloaded, so we need to avoid the traffic police."

It’s currently the time of large national meetings, so even the traffic police in the Provincial City were working night shifts, which meant an obvious increase in patrols at night. These taxi drivers had the experience to only take roads without police.

After several turns, they arrived home, where several girls who had never been there were impressed by the imposing house. Xu Xiaoyan quickly reminded those who hadn’t visited before: "There are two big dogs inside, not yet tethered. But don’t be scared, they’re really well-behaved and won’t bite... "

However, they still got startled when the door opened. Upon seeing Yan Fei, the two huge wolf dogs wagged their tails and bounded over, looking very majestic. These dogs were nothing like the usual ones; to the unaware, they might seem intimidating, but to the knowledgeable, they exuded an air of evil spirits—Boss Yan had trained them to protect his new house and fiancée so well that they would not hesitate to pounce even on a dinosaur.

A few girls who hadn’t seen these dogs before exclaimed in chorus, "Can these even be called dogs? They look so fierce!"

Ji Yunyun and Zhou Peipei had visited in the past two days and had already seen the two dogs that Yan Fei brought over this time. Hearing their classmates’ remarks, Ji Yunyun explained with a hint of sarcasm, "It would be strange if they weren’t fierce; these dogs eat better than we do every day. We were ecstatic just to eat Western food, but these dogs eat beef daily—the beef they eat might even come from the same cow we ate at the restaurant..."

The girls had long been numb to the revelation that the beef they had just eaten in the restaurant belonged to the young and outrageously rich Boss Yan, who raised his own cattle. Seeing the price per serving of beef on the menu, many of the girls were scared witless. The meal they had just eaten could easily cost them six months’ worth of living expenses.

Now hearing that even the dogs were eating beef didn’t faze them anymore. After all, the rich will be rich; they can feed their dogs whatever they like, and who are we to say anything?

The truth is, treating people to a meal was something Yan Fei was really inexperienced with, and he shouldn’t have taken them to eat Western food. Now, aside from Ji Yunyun and Zhou Beibei, the two girls who had known him from before, only the little dark-skinned girl remained unfazed—in her eyes, Boss Yan was omnipotent and stood tall beyond measure. Not to mention something as trivial as this; she would probably find it utterly unsurprising even if Boss Yan said he had become the governor.

The other girls were quite uncomfortable during the meal, and now, seeing the house and yard, they felt even more so.

Luckily, Ji Yunyun was a cheerful person and quite good at schmoozing. Along with Zhou Peipei, by sharing anecdotes about Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan, they gradually helped everyone relax a bit.

They came back intending to have a meal, but when Yan Fei asked what everyone wanted to eat, Ji Yunyun touched her stomach and said, "Huh? Why do I feel full again?"

Ha ha ha...

A group of girls immediately burst into uncontrollable laughter.

Not surprising at all, these days even girls might have a good appetite. Most people’s food lacks the fat and calories to keep hunger at bay, forcing them to eat more. Now that they had a meat-centric meal, surely the quantity was less than their usual meals. At first, they felt like it wasn’t filling, but after a while, once started digesting, they felt full again.

Since no one needed to eat, it actually worked out perfectly. A lively group gathered here, made up of nine girls from three different schools, plus Xu Xiaoyan, the female host. As they chatted away, everyone loosened up and let go of their initial restraint, soon filling the house with laughter and joy.

Yan Fei found himself with nothing to do, so he simply went outside to continue tending to his small vegetable plot.

While he was busy working, a group of girls came out, each holding a flashlight wanting to look at the trees in the yard. Watching their expressions of wonder and surprise, Yan Fei suddenly remembered something and approached Ji Yunyun to ask, "Considering everyone’s helping out for a day, and I’ve even received an order, should I give them some compensation or something?"

As soon as Ji Yunyun heard that, she glanced at him and whispered reproachfully, "Then you better give me a bit more since I brought two people with me, hmph!"

After her hmph, she explained, "Don’t talk about money. Without it, we’re all friends helping you out while having some fun, and that’s like participation in social practice. If you give money, it changes the whole thing. Everyone here is a good friend; just treat us like when we were in high school. If you feel bad about it, wait until the event is over in a couple of days, and just give everyone some jerky as a souvenir. Talking about money would just hurt feelings."

Yan Fei nodded, "Alright then! But what about Xu Xing’s dormitory girl who brought a few Little Ni’ers to help? They’re missing out on business because of it, should I pay them?"

"Hehe, are you not afraid of hurting their feelings by offering money? Didn’t you see how obedient that dark beauty was towards you? If you give it to her, she’ll have to accept it, won’t she? It’s hard to see, but now Hero Yan has become quite charming!" Ji Yunyun looked Yan Fei up and down repeatedly, and though she meant to say more, the look on Yan Fei’s face—blank and earnestly seeking advice—made her deflate in an instant.

"Forget it, just be as clueless as you are! Anyway, your beef jerky isn’t cheap, so if you feel like it, give everyone a pack later on to show your appreciation; if not, then drop it. It’s a simple matter. Who would’ve thought that the once simple and honest Hero Yan could have such a complicated mind now!"

Yan Fei had sought Ji Yunyun out for advice because he thought she seemed more worldly and knowledgeable than the other girls, but he ended up getting an earful. Fortunately, the other girls called for Ji Yunyun, and with her prompt response, she left, sparing him who knows how many more words.

In the blink of an eye, the night passed, and when Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan brought their goods to the trade fair, hardly had they set up their stall when the girls started arriving in twos and threes to help.

The stall next to Yan Fei’s belonged to someone selling a drink called apple vinegar, and they had been very friendly when Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan first arrived. Once the girls came over, the friendliness only escalated, and they began passing out drinks, exhibiting an extraordinary level of enthusiasm, "Please, don’t mind if I do. With you standing there, even the front of my stall is getting more traffic. I even finalized a deal at dinner last night, and I have you to thank for that!"

At first, it was a bit embarrassing, but since the gesture was sincerely warm, the girls reluctantly accepted their kindness.

Yan Fei grew curious, "Is this made from turning apples into vinegar? It must only have a bit of a tart taste, right? Do apples grow in your area?"

"Grow what? You should know a bit about the lands since you’re growing forage, right? This neighbor of ours, do you think the soil and climate are much different from yours?" The stall owner sighed. "A child without a mother is a long story!"

And it indeed wasn’t a simple story, but since it was still early and no customers were around, the two started chatting.

The owner’s reference to neighbors indicated that his market was adjacent to Wancheng City. They had started a fruit tree planting project even earlier than Tanghe County. Unfortunately, being early hadn’t helped; it turned out to be a tragedy.

They had planted apple trees, acre after acre, only to see them bloom and fruit at last, with the apples ending up the size of chicken eggs—and that’s comparing them to native eggs at that.

Small size aside, tastiness would have redeemed them! While they were crisp when bitten into, each one was so sour it could set your teeth on edge, to the point where not even pigs would eat them.

The stall owner had originally dabbled in other businesses and had some money, so he was persuaded to establish a small drink factory, using apples to produce apple vinegar. However, due to its taste, it was only popular in a few local areas, and outside of that, no one recognized it.

As a small local enterprise, they lacked ample advertising funds, and their brand wasn’t well-known. Despite the sales reps running themselves ragged, sales were just mediocre. The factory had been operating for two years, barely surviving, and that was with some local protections in place.

In the end, it was clear that every household had its own set of difficulties. Despite appearing put together on the outside, this owner was full of grievances.

After talking for quite a while, the owner finally got to the point, "Boss Yan, since you know so many classmates, could you help introduce a few female classmates tomorrow to come and help promote my product?"

As the two "little bosses" chatted for a while, more and more people started arriving at the event. Little Dark-skinned Girl’s young helpers had already come to work, each wearing an apron bearing "Ocean Snacks," and carrying beef jerky as they walked in front of the stall.

Yan Fei turned his head to look at a couple of girls who were actually eavesdropping on the ’story’ beside him. Pointing at Little Dark-skinned Girl, a few girls suggested, "Why don’t you just let her find people? She must have plenty of contacts, right?"
