Chapter 854: Chapter 476 Eye Effect

"...With the attendants striking gongs to clear the way in perfect array, the drums and music played, ’di di di di di di, da da da da da da, di di di di da da da da,’ pleasant and melodious to the ear..."

The sound of gongs and drums filled the air, and the suona horns sounded in unison.

On the grand stage, an actor adorned with a phoenix crown and a robe of rosy clouds beamed with joy as they performed a play that nearly every man, woman, and child in the province could recognize.

A big red banner hung on the stage, making it clear why a stage was set up for a play.

The Trade City’s National Commodity Fair—a joyous occasion certainly warranted a grand play to celebrate. Perhaps the younger generation had started walking around with Walkmans, listening to pop music, studying the fashion of celebrities every day. But drama still had a long and profound legacy on the Zhongyuan Plains, like the play on stage—how many of the billions in Yu Province hadn’t heard it?

Don’t assume that only singers and dancers become famous; many audience members below had already shouted out the names of the actors on stage. The actors, smiling radiantly, had taken small, dainty steps forward, and with a slight bow and nod alone, the air of a young lady from a distinguished family was immediately palpable, drawing cheers from the crowd below.

Amidst the sound of drums and gongs, with just one line, the people below were instantly captivated, not to mention the elderly—many children could join in with the rhythm and shout a line: "Three blasts of firecrackers outside the official’s gate..."

Singing festive plays on festive days is a tradition in Yu Province, something suited for men and women, young and old, and never out of style.

Even foreigners unfamiliar with the plays, upon seeing an actress on stage in her red makeup, beaming with joy, would be involuntarily swept up in the atmosphere and feel the joy within it.

Next to the stage were the various exhibition booths, big and small, belonging to both well-known and obscure companies from within and outside the province, all with smiling faces, ready to answer any questions from visitors inspecting their stalls.

Among all these exhibitions, the beef jerky booth from the small town of Sancha River in Tanghe County of Wan City captured quite a lot of attention.

If Boss Yan Fei was going to get customers, how could Xu Xiaoyan not be there?

Apart from the two of them, there were seven or eight other classmates of Xu Xiaoyan’s there to cheer them on, like Zhou Peipei, Ji Yunyun, and as Yan Fei dubbed her, the Little Dark-skinned Girl—pretty much everyone willing to come was there. What is called the eyeball effect but a group of youthful, lively, and diverse university students standing together, bound to attract more attention than the other stalls?

The usually reticent Little Dark-skinned Girl was the most enthusiastic, and now she was thoroughly trained. Standing there confidently, a student from the prestigious Provincial University Law School, she pointed to the two bowls on the table and called out to the curious crowd, "Don’t just look; come try our Sancha River beef jerky! Don’t let our small place fool you; our beef is a big hit even in Hong Kong. And that restaurant in the Provincial City, the chef is from abroad, and they use our beef..."

Besides that, there were even a few girls at the event carrying bowls, with a clear sign made from a makeshift piece of cardboard: "Welcome to taste, Sancha River Beef Jerky..."

All these girls were Little Dark-skinned Girl’s fellow villagers, who had stopped going to school early and were not yet of marrying age, or to put it another way, had not gotten married yet. With nothing else to do, they were originally peddling snacks in the Provincial City, and now they too were summoned by the Little Dark-skinned Girl to come and help out.

When this array was set up, several bosses on the side almost spat blood right then: "We thought it would be respectful for the boss to come in person, but a few rough guys compared to that group of sprightly girls? There’s just no contest!"

Look at those girls—some are clever and mischievous, some are innocently naive, some stand out with an extraordinary charisma. Even in a campus setting, they’d turn heads to the point of causing collisions—how can a bunch of grown men compete with that?

The key issue is that many people lack experience in this. Some thought they could just show up themselves, bringing their capable lieutenants to stand here, and all business would naturally fall into their hands. But the problem is, customers have been openly snatched away by a few girls, and before they can even get a word in, there’s no chance to talk business!

At long last, someone looking like a boss had just taken his place at his own booth, about to introduce his chain store, when a vivacious girl beside him heard and came over, "Boss, do your stores sell beef jerky? Try our Sancha River beef jerky!"

The human heart has certainly changed! You see a decent-looking person, a big boss who has seen the world, how come as soon as he sees the young lady’s sweet smile, he can’t help but strike up a conversation? And once the conversation started, upon seeing the beef jerky the girl handed over, how could he not help but take a taste? It’s true what they say—a mouth indulged finds it hard to speak up. After tasting and chatting, unbelievably, he stands at our booth doing business with her—where does that leave us to reason?

The key thing is, all those girls are young—how could anyone bear to chase them away, even if they wanted to!

This was a violation of the industry’s rules!

In reality, big companies know to have good-looking, charismatic people man the booths—it’s just the inexperienced honest folks who bring their business regulars in earnest. These regulars might hold their own at the dinner table, but out here on the streets, compared to the articulate young ladies, they just don’t stand a chance...

No matter how good their business actually is, it’s a fact that quite a few people got pulled over to their side.

In fact, Yan Fei was also in a daze and only after a while did he realize that Little Dark-Skinned Girl was really quite something. She had now registered a small company and all those women selling snacks, wandering the streets and alleys, were organized, and though they didn’t have uniforms, they did have matching aprons.

Basically, the sort of apron you’d wear while cooking. It’s quite simple, no need to get someone else to do it, just buy some fabric and make it yourself. A simple, dark green apron with four bold characters on it: "Ocean Snacks." Anyone seen wearing this kind of apron on the streets and alleys was known to belong to an organized group.

Do something long enough and you’ll gain experience—even though these folks were uneducated, they had one major benefit: they were obedient.

The leader might be a college student with no experience, but it doesn’t matter when you’ve got half a dormitory of girls behind you contributing ideas. No matter how zany the idea, these uneducated workers dared to try. And it’s not just about wearing an apron to sell stuff—if they were told to wear costumes on the street, they wouldn’t mind. They set out to make money, and as long as it brings in the cash, anything goes as long as it’s honest work. What’s there to fear?

In fact, no one expected that such simple fare as fried peanuts and popcorn would make such a splash with these ladies at the helm.

It’s really not difficult, just a matter of taking more care—in picking the peanuts before frying them, and as for the frying, the chefs from the villages have been frying who knows how many over the past year. They could do it with their eyes closed and still guarantee not a single peanut burnt.

Lack of technical skill is no issue—as long as our costs are low and our workers aren’t afraid of hard work and can check their pride, doing business isn’t so hard after all.
