As soon as Xu Xiaoyan suggested walking to the county town together, Yan Fei immediately opposed it: "That’s quite a distance, you’re wearing high heels, can you manage?"

She was heading off today to submit her university choices, dressed in clothes she had painstakingly selected. Although she intended initially to take the bus, she wore a simple pink long-sleeved shirt, a pair of white slacks, and her hair in the same old ponytail. It wasn’t much of an outfit.

But Yan Fei could tell she had put effort into it.

His nose was sensitive. He had detected a faint fragrance early on and easily identified it as the scent of vanishing cream, based on his extraordinary sense of smell. His own mother had some. She would apply a dab now and then, as if a touch of it made her more beautiful.

He had never smelled this scent on Xu Xiaoyan before. Surely, she wouldn’t buy such a "luxury item". Perhaps one of her sisters brought it home, and she secretly borrowed it to pamper herself!

"How can these be considered high heels? Some people wear higher ones!" Xu Xiaoyan lifted her leg for Yan Fei to look at. She was wearing the sandals Yan Fei had bought for her. Originally, she couldn’t walk well with them on, but she had long since adapted.

They weren’t really high. They barely elevated her feet at all, by future standards, these would be flats.

"And besides, there’s your...your cow if I get tired. I can ride on its back." Xu Xiaoyan wanted to say that Yan Fei could carry her if she got tired, but she changed her answer at the last minute because they weren’t alone.

Her words reminded Yan Fei of the night he had carried her. And like a fool, he agreed to her suggestion and decided to walk to the county town.

Among the four cows he was planning to sell, in addition to the three fattened cows he’d bought later, the smallest bull he initially bought out of kindness was one of them.

The nine other cows on the farm were carefully selected by Yan Fei, but this one was small from the beginning. Even though it was the first to be fed bone meal, according to its growth record, its growth still lagged behind.

Conveniently, he was planning to get a new batch of cattle, so he decided to sell this one as well.

"How come this cow isn’t all that big, and yet you’re selling it?" asked Xu Xiaoyan, once Yan Fei and Heizi had led the cow out of the gate of the cattle farm.

"Growing too slowly makes it costly to raise. It’s more practical to sell it and replace it with something better." Yan Fei explained.

"Oh, I think it’s quite a pretty cow. Look, look, of all the cattle, its horns are the longest. Doesn’t it look like it has four ears?" Xu Xiaoyan exclaimed with fascination.

Indeed, horns of normal cattle are usually short and nearly invisible. This calf’s horns, however, were quite long and had a pleasing curve. When Xu Xiaoyan said it was pretty, she wasn’t referring to its horns, but its beautiful colour was also eye-catching.

There are generally three colours of Wan City cattle: yellow, red, and white. This one was red. Based on the usual number of the three colours he had seen, white cattle were the rarest; yellow was the most common, and red was in the middle, not particularly uncommon. Regardless, Yan Fei’s cattle, all meticulously cared for and fed with his secret bone meal formula, looked healthy and energetic.

"It is quite attractive," Yan Fei casually agreed, patting the animal’s small head as he spoke. "But it’s growing too slowly!"

Calling it a small head was apt, as cattle in Wan City tended to have heads slightly disproportionate to their bodies.

"Wow, look, it’s very well-behaved." Xu Xiaoyan noticed as though discovering new land.

This cow had been in the cattle farm since its arrival. Up till now, it still hadn’t had a nose ring put on! It was just loosely tied with a rope and obediently followed Yan Fei as they walked. When Yan Fei had patted its head earlier, it instinctively stopped to be patted. This simple act stunned Xu Xiaoyan.

"Of course, it was just weaned when I bought it! I fed it most of the time and held it to weigh it often!" Yan Fei boasted.

Xu Xiaoyan was surprised just for a moment, she was well aware that selling the cow was a necessity. If a cow’s growth was too slow, raising it wouldn’t be profitable. So, she did not comment further.

As they were talking, the three of them reached the small road. Yan Fei glanced at Xu Xiaoyan’s sandals and asked: "Are you tired yet? Shall we see what it feels like to ride a cow?"

"I’m not tired, we just started!" Xu Xiaoyan waved her hand dismissively.

"How about I carry your bag for you?"

"No need, really, I’m not tired!"

They hadn’t walked very far, and she’d only half-heartedly mentioned riding a cow earlier. She’d never seen anyone use a cow for travel before.

The two were having a good laugh and quickly made it to the river.

Yan Fei handed over the cow he was leading to Heizi, then stooped over to Xu Xiaoyan, "Come on, I’ll carry you across."

Xu Xiaoyan’s face flushed slightly, feeling a bit embarrassed she said, "How about I wade through the river myself? The water isn’t deep."

"No, hop on quickly! Let’s not waste any time." Yan Fei insisted.

The girl was already preparing to roll up her trouser legs. Upon hearing Yan Fei’s words, she glanced at Heizi next to them and decided against the piggyback ride. Tentatively, she suggested, "How about I ride across on the cow?"

"That could work." Yan Fei thought for a moment and agreed, preparing to lead the cow over.

"Can I ride the smaller cow?" Xu Xiaoyan shrunk back slightly when she saw Yan Fei was about to lead the biggest cow over.

"The smaller one?" Yan Fei looked at the calf, then at the girl’s petite figure. He thought it seemed fine and nodded, "Alright, give it a try!"

Even though they called it a calf, it wasn’t that small. After all, it had been well-fed every day. Comparing its growth rate with the cows usually reared by typical farming households, this one had grown quite quickly. It already weighed around six to seven hundred catties, so carrying a person would be no problem.

Surprisingly, Yan Fei initially thought it would take some effort for the cow to carry a person, but this calf was quite tame. It let Xu Xiaoyan sit on its back quite easily.

Just so you know, horses, cows or donkeys will act unruly the first time they are ridden. They initially need some training.

Yan Fei, who was leading the cow, turned his head and called out to Heizi, "Just follow me and go wherever I go."

Heizi nodded, muttering to himself as he followed behind them into the water, "Finally, they remember me ..."

As it was the calf’s first time in the water it was a little frightened, but with Yan Fei guiding it and patting its head, it got across the river successfully. Even so, Xu Xiaoyan was frightened and hunched down on the cow’s back.

When they arrived at the shore, Heizi was still dawdling. He was leading three cows that were unfamiliar since they had only recently started their feeding schedule. It took him a little longer to cross the river than Yan Fei!

Seeing Xu Xiaoyan about to get down from the cow, Yan Fei casually suggested, "We still have a bit of a way ahead, why don’t you sit for a while longer. Don’t worry, I’ll lead the way, it’s quite stable."

Haviing sat for a while, Xu Xiaoyan found it quite interesting and happily obliged,"Alright then! But you better hold on tight, I don’t want to fall."

"Don’t worry!" Yan Fei responded, and as soon as Heizi made it to shore leading the cows, they began their journey down the path to the county town.

The path they were following after crossing the river was mainly just a field path, there were still people working in the fields who found the sight of a young girl riding a cow quite intriguing.

Seeing as nobody knew anybody, and the girl wasn’t shy about being watched, she sat high and saw far on the cow’s back. Yanfei walked beside her, leading the cow, as she enjoyed the view of the blue sky, white clouds and countryside landscape. She relished the cool breeze on her face, was in high spirits, and had a great time chatting and laughing with Yan Fei. Such joy!
