Chapter 166: Chapter 42 You Deserve It _1
The scenery was all fields and meadows, with a lovely woman by his side. It was all perfect.
However, gradually, Yan Fei’s mood was not as beautiful as it had been. As he was talking to the girl, he could still hear Heizi murmuring behind him from time to time.
The volume of Heizi’s mumbles was quite low, but Yan Fei’s keen ears didn’t miss a word.
There wasn’t a single pleasant remark.
This guy, leading three cows at their back, was envious, jealous, and resentful watching the couple flaunt their love while he had to guide the cattle on the road, worrying about them breaking loose.
At first, he only grumbled things like "They always pick on me". Gradually, assuming Yan Fei couldn’t hear him, his words became more outrageous.
Despite his lack of education and sophistication, he was quite good at spouting snappy remarks, such as "putting flowers in cow dung is still pleasing," "the best cabbages are eaten by pigs," "the magpie is blind to have picked a crow," and so on.
Yan Fei, in good spirits, was engrossed in leading the cows and watching Xu Xiaoyan chuckle under the sunlight, had no interest in squabbling with the guy behind him.
He just made a mental note and planned to deal with him later.
However, Yan Fei initially thought he could hold back, but he couldn’t resist for long and yelled at Heizi: "If you can’t bear it, you still have to tolerate it! Stop whining and get moving!"
Xu Xiaoyan looked stunned, while Heizi was taken aback and immediately shut up.
Yan Fei couldn’t stand it anymore. After his mumbling, Heizi came up with his own song: "In my hand, I lead the cow, tears keep rolling down, the two in front are so shameless, how can I bear it... "
Wasn’t that the song "Sorrow oh Sorrow" that those delinquents loved? It is said to be sung by a former prisoner, did Heizi think Yan Fei wouldn’t know?
Just because he had to lead a few cows, and he was accompanied by two of them, was it that unbearable?
After being shouted at by Yan Fei, Heizi retorted, "Why are you yelling at me?"
"You deserve it! Do you think I can’t hear you just because you are speaking softly?" Yan Fei glared at him fiercely.
"Oh my, what’s wrong with you?" Xu Xiaoyan nudged Yan Fei’s back with her foot, showing her displeasure.
After being exposed by Yan Fei like this, Heizi didn’t make a peep.
However, it was uncertain whether he was honestly quiet or just pretending to be. His eyelids kept flicking at the couple in front of him, his lips were moving, but he made no sound, who knows what he was mumbling to himself in his mind!
Yan Fei didn’t care to bother with him. As long as he didn’t hear it, he might as well pretend he hadn’t said anything!
After walking a few steps, he couldn’t help but turn his head again to look at the foot Xu Xiaoyan had just kicked him with. The fair foot in white sandals, adorned with a silver accessory and a small red glass flower, complemented by her hennaed red toenails, looked extraordinarily pretty whether it was the shoe or the foot.
He had intended to compliment her when he first asked if she wanted to sit on the back of the cow, but now he couldn’t resist anymore and exclaimed, "How come even your foot is so beautiful!"
"Pssh...What are you talking about?" She blushed immediately.
As they approached the border of the county, the path widened, the crowd grew denser, and Xu Xiaoyan was too embarrassed to stay on the back of the cow anymore.
She regretted having to get off. "Just when I learned how to sit comfortably, I have to get off and walk, sigh!"
Yan Fei laughed, "No worries! There are plenty of cows at the ranch, you can ride them to your heart’s content when you get back. Next time, we will put a pad on it, sitting like this is too uncomfortable."
"Indeed..." Xu Xiaoyan thought about it and realized that sitting on the cow’s back without any padding was indeed uncomfortable. She had noticed during the excitement earlier, but now she was starting to feel the pain in her sitting area.
"Hey, aren’t you going to school? Are you planning to have me lead a herd of cattle to school?" Heizi called out from behind, unsatisfied.
Upon hearing this, Yan Fei realized that they were indeed at a crossroads where the paths to the cattle ranch and the school diverged.
"Why don’t you lead the cattle for now? Don’t sell them immediately; wait for us to arrive," Yan Fei suggested.
"But what if they offer a high price?" Heizi was always one to stir up trouble.
"If the price is high, then sell it! Why wouldn’t you?" Xu Xiaoyan interjected immediately.
Yan Fei stayed silent. Regardless of the outcome, it was just selling cattle, nothing more. Besides, it wasn’t as if the cows would be sold in a jiffy.
Heizi, leading the cattle, watched Xu Xiaoyan and Yan Fei walk away hand in hand. He spit on the ground and grumbled, "So what if they’re college students? Once I have money, I’ll find twenty or thirty like them. I’ll change a wife every day without repeating for a month..."
As his words trailed off, he thought he saw Yan Fei’s figure pause for a moment in the distance. Scared, he quickly turned around and walked off with the cattle, fearing another scolding from Yan Fei.
"Is something wrong?" Xu Xiaoyan asked Yan Fei, noticing his strange expression.
"It’s nothing. Some people are as stubborn as donkeys; they don’t move when you guide them and step back when you beat them. They deserve a good scolding!" Yan Fei replied indifferently. "Let’s hurry on, your classmates should be gathered by now."
"Okay!" The girl didn’t ask further as they quickly headed toward the school.
Once at school, Yan Fei had little to do. He merely stood by Xu Xiaoyan’s side like an invisible man, occasionally greeting familiar female classmates with a smile.
As the end approached, the teachers indulged the students, allowing them to run wild. Some students’ parents had also arrived, sitting directly in the classroom.
Yan Fei followed Xu Xiaoyan into the classroom and chose a spot by the wall, watching her chat and laugh with their classmates.
When it was time to fill in their career selection forms, the classroom quieted down.
Xu Xiaoyan stopped chatting with her classmates and sat next to Yan Fei. They whispered and quickly finished filling out the form.
As soon as they handed in the form, they were pulled aside by a teacher for a private discussion.
Yan Fei was nervous and unsure about what was happening.
But Xu Xiaoyan returned quickly, reporting that the teacher wanted her to aim for a better school. She replied that she didn’t perform very well, and the teacher disappointedly dropped the subject.
They didn’t dwell on it since they had made their choices beforehand. Besides, Xu Xiaoyan’s second choice was a finance college in their province, while her third choice was a local normal school. The teacher probably assumed she was underselling her performance, not knowing that she didn’t evaluate her scores that much.
"It was not a small amount of money! Going to have a meal doesn’t make sense; it would be better if they gave it to me! It’s fine to hang out together, but why spend money?" Xu Xiaoyan complained after they exited the school gate.
Yan Fei tried to console her, saying, "Isn’t it just a few dollars? We’re about to sell our cattle, let’s hurry over and see how much we can get."
Only then did Xu Xiaoyan cheer up and run with him towards the cattle market.
Xu Xiaoyan’s grievance was about a recent incident at her school.
After the students had filled out their career selection forms, they usually returned home, or at most, the good friends among them would hang out a bit. However, some ’enthusiastic’ students in the class proposed a gathering for a meal, conveniently asking for the extra study material fees collected earlier, which ended up not being distributed.
Actually, it wasn’t a huge amount of money; Xu Xiaoyan was just reluctant to part with it.
