Chapter 1587: Chapter 759: Looking for Laborers_2
"So what do you need me for?" Professor He asked, puzzled. "I can’t do this; it’s not even my field. It’s way off!"
"I need you to find people! There are those particularly honest and reliable teachers and students in the school whose field align with this, recommend a batch to me. This is an opportunity I’m giving away for free, and I’m even paying them a salary. It’s a good deal that I won’t just offer to anyone; at the very least, they have to be pleasing to my eyes, right?"
"That makes sense." Professor He seemed to understand a bit.
If a researcher gets involved in this kind of research, even if just for support work, once a result is achieved, their value instantly skyrockets. And to earn extra money while doing research, as Yan Fei said, even if it’s being offered for free, it still needs to go to someone pleasing to the eye.
"Now that you understand, start contacting people," Yan Fei said. "Here’s what I’m thinking: the lab has already started, so let’s first contact those who are willing to come and sign a contract. The personnel should primarily be from the school, but it doesn’t matter if they’re not, as long as they are reliable. It’s up to you, Professor, to arrange it. Those who are willing can come; those who aren’t, let them be. But you can’t mention that I’m the one doing this at the beginning; even if they come, they must sign a confidentiality agreement. They have to ensure they won’t speak carelessly until the results are out."
"Don’t worry, I understand this better than you do," Professor He said, standing up. "Come with me, I think I still have some relevant contracts and agreements here; you can take a look for reference. They’re from projects I was involved in years ago. Time has changed; the confidentiality period has expired..."
This was an unexpected boon. The contracts Yan Fei made for Liu JinXue and Yang Hongqi were all crafted by himself because he was in a hurry and did not want to trouble his wife. If he had a professional look over them, he assumed they’d find tens of thousands of loopholes in his contracts.
Yan Fei trusted Liu Jin and Yang Hongqi, but for recruiting more people, he couldn’t just sign anything; he had to get something more formal.
Professor He gathered the materials and sat waiting for Yan Fei to finish reading them, frowning and relaxing by turns, then finally spoke after a while, "Xiao Fei, have you considered finding some partner institutions for this project?"
"Partner for what?" Yan Fei didn’t understand. "My system is a complete set; just follow the instructions. Is there really a need for partner institutions?"
"Surely this isn’t just these few sheets of paper." Professor He tapped on the papers on the desk and said, "Have you calculated that even if there are no glitches mid-process, how long it would actually take to produce results if made into reality? At the very least you have to go through each step yourself, right? For a newly started lab, if you were to do all the steps by yourself, how many people would it take? How much time?"
Yan Fei pondered for a while and then realized that he might have oversimplified things. The cloning technology he was working on was somatic cell cloning, which was technically more difficult than the original embryonic cell cloning—a slight difference in scientific research could mean a world of difference. It wasn’t just a matter of needing a few more days or attempts to complete.
Yan Fei had the technology figured out, but even he couldn’t instantaneously shorten the embryo’s development into an individual from months to just ten days or half a month. Therefore, both theoretically and practically, it was impossible for him to produce tangible results within just a couple of months.
"Partner institutions? Which ones, and to have them do some insignificant tasks? Would they be willing?" After some thought, Yan Fei asked somewhat reluctantly.
"Don’t feel as if others are stealing your hard work; what’s yours can’t be taken away by anyone," Professor He guessed his thoughts by his expression. "The main technology is still in your hands; they are just assisting in the partnership. You can choose some time-consuming and labor-intensive tasks that are low in technical content to assign to them, and as long as you let them participate, no one would say anything when results are achieved."
"So basically, you’re suggesting finding some laborers to handle the dirty and tiring work, and then just let them leave their names when it’s successful?" Yan Fei seemed to understand.
"Can’t you put it in a nicer way? What do you mean by laborers?" Professor He was somewhat amused and frustrated. "However, as much as it’s not pleasant to hear... that’s the reality."
"Just a name, is it that important?" Yan Fei muttered.
"Of course it’s important; being involved, even if they can’t do much work, is akin to gaining a learning process," Professor He heard his mutter. "When young people like you chase celebrities, didn’t those stars start from being extras too? How many start off as leading actors?"
At the end of a movie, general movie fans remember the lead actors first, more dedicated fans might remember the director and producer, while a slew of extras appear at the end, but besides celebrity cameos, ordinary people don’t even bother looking at the names of regular extras.
Still, many people are willing to be extras because, through these opportunities, they can earn money and gain experience, taking step by step towards becoming a lead actor—It’s pretty much the same in research. When a top expert undertakes a project, countless people vie for the assistant’s role just to learn.
"So what about looking for a collaborative partner?" Yan Fei humbly asked for advice.
"Don’t you have other projects to do after this one?" Professor He replied with a rhetorical question. "If you only have a few high-end talents, can you guarantee that all future projects will go well? Surely you need some people with decent skills, who can keep up with your pace to assist you, right? If you don’t include others in this project now, what will you do later when you need them and find out they can’t even handle assistant work?"
That made sense. China’s table tennis level is generally high; this is because everyone has a high level of skill, and those who win gold medals never lack high-level sparring partners. Why can’t other countries do it? Because their general level is subpar, and even if there are one or two with potential for improvement, without a good sparring partner, they’re still no good.
"Besides, it’s not possible for your lab to have too many instruments; if there are other research institutes willing to collaborate, then resources are shared. That benefits you too, doesn’t it?"
Yan Fei didn’t take this last point to heart – Professor He was thinking from a normal perspective, but Boss Yan was extraordinary. If he wanted to, he could get any advanced instruments—as long as they existed on this planet.
But that would be too ostentatious and inappropriate.
"Alright, then I’ll take your advice." After considering it, Yan Fei completely accepted Professor He’s suggestion. "So, who do you suggest we collaborate with?"
"Why should I?" Professor He looked down on him. "You expect me to work for free?"
"Whatever you want, just say it." Yan Fei boasted generously. "Regularly supplied alcohol, honey, including the vegetables and grains in the kitchen, is that enough?"
"That’s more like it." Professor He stroked his non-existent beard with pride. "You are teachable, my boy. So, shall I make the phone call now?"
"Don’t!" Yan Fei quickly interrupted. "I still need to go back and cook for my wife!"
"..." Professor He’s face darkened immediately. "You’re not prioritizing such an important matter?"
"No matter how important the matter is, we still need to eat!" Yan Fei said as he ran off. "You do the contacting first, we can talk after you’ve made contact. For now, let’s not make too much noise! Right, keep these papers with you. If others don’t believe you, let them have a look first..."
Before leaving, he didn’t forget to shout towards the kitchen: "Madam, I have something urgent to attend to, you don’t need to make my meal!"
And even as he ran out of the building, he could still hear Professor He’s cursing voice from the room...
He was cursing because he got what he deserved; there were also several labs in China working on cloning projects, but as Professor He said, none had yet produced significant results—and another thing, none of these labs with funded projects were in Yuzhou Province.
Now, with the materials Yan Fei had presented, if others knew about them, they would likely work overtime without complaints, but there he was, still thinking about going home to cook for his wife...
As you can imagine, while he was in no rush, there were plenty of others who were. Just as he had barely taken a few bites of the meal he had prepared, Professor He called him: "You need to get over here, and bring a couple more copies of your materials. People are looking for me already!"
