Chapter 1588: Chapter 760 Take it Slow on the Road
"Director Zhao, a pleasure to collaborate!" Yan Fei, having signed the last name, stood up and extended his hand towards the middle-aged man across from him, who looked back with anticipation.
"A pleasure to collaborate indeed!" Even through his glasses, one could see the excitement and expectation in Director Zhao’s eyes as he vigorously shook Yan Fei’s hand. "You’ve done a tremendous good for Yuzhou Province! Rest assured, we will definitely support this project with all our might, striving to yield research results at the earliest."
"We have to give it our full support!" chuckled an elderly man with graying hair next to Director Zhao. "Xiao Zhao, from now we’ve to work hard together, and make sure we don’t fall too far behind our classmate Yan Fei. And, we’re a bit short on conditions; we’ll need to rely more on your efforts. Don’t complain about being tired when the time comes!"
"How could I?" Director Zhao said with a smile. "The real effort has to come from Boss Yan, who is our true benefactor!"
Yan Fei, ever the gentleman, said, "Teacher Zhao, Teacher Yang, we’ll need to get along frequently from now on, so let’s dispense with the formalities. I’ll take care of today’s meal—let’s have a modest celebration banquet to toast to our impending success."
"I’ll do it, I’ll do it..." Director Zhao interjected eagerly.
The group exchanged courtesies over who would pay for a while, until the liaison, Professor He, finally put his foot down, deciding that Director Zhao would be the one treating.
Teacher Yang is from Agricultural University and will be the lead collaborator with Yan Fei’s lab in the future. Director Zhao Fangliang heads the provincial research institution and has been quite busy these past two days for the sake of Yan Fei’s project.
Yan Fei’s material was without a doubt comprehensive, and anyone in research could tell after looking through part of it that it was not fabricated. Thus, Professor He’s liaison had an easy job; he simply called to give a notice, and Yan Fei showed up with his material for others to glance over. After that, there wasn’t much to worry about.
In the end, even the confidentiality contract offered by Professor He wasn’t needed – both Agricultural University and the Research Institute could provide plenty of contractual terms to ensure cooperation, each party showing considerable sincerity.
Yuzhou Province has always been a major agricultural province, its primary scientific research direction has also traditionally been agriculture. For example, the wheat research that Professor Qi used to conduct is a fairly representative project.
But that doesn’t mean researchers don’t want to explore other areas; it all boils down to two words: lack of money.
Money is always tight, and research isn’t like other fields; no one can guarantee results even with investment. Sometimes a whole team may work tirelessly for years only to realize they’ve been going in the wrong direction, leading to fruitless efforts – such occurrences are by no means unheard of in the history of scientific research.
Even when research yields results, if it doesn’t quickly generate economic benefits, not many people are interested – this differs from corporate research where new product development, whether successful or not, can at least be showcased. If the research approach is wrong, it serves merely to prove to others which paths are impassable and little else of value can be shown.
Now that Yan Fei is willing to support a project, and not just any project, but one with a high success rate that could fill a gap in provincial research – even if the success rate were lower, there are plenty of research units within the province eager for cooperation.
In just two days, more precisely, a bit more than one day, the matter was settled. The relevant contracts were signed; Yan Fei would first provide some funding, and the two units would contribute manpower and all available equipment to kick-start the preliminary work with full force.
Moreover, Director Zhao already said that since all parties signing the contract have agreed to confidentiality, they ensure that the source of Yan Fei’s materials will not be leaked. For now, they cannot guarantee the project’s prospects to higher-ups, so at this stage, officials will only monitor without offering direct support via official channels. However, after the research progresses for some time and partial results emerge due to both units’ involvement, the authorities will undoubtedly provide full support.
It’s common sense that whether the research outcome ends up being private or public, as long as the lab is within Provincial City, it will end up a win-win situation – no one will toil in vain. Scientific research is also a critical way to demonstrate a province’s capabilities; only with plane trees can one attract golden phoenixes. A barren spot can’t dream of attracting investment if there’s no competitive edge as compared to a treasure trove!
For Yan Fei, this is sufficient. What he needs now is to let people know what he’s working on, to prevent others from assuming he’s just fooling around. As long as he can maintain a group of supporters, he believes those who try to trip him up will eventually meet their downfall – we shall see as things progress.
While it’s called a celebration banquet, it’s still all about business. For instance, discussing what equipment Yan Fei has in his Sancha River lab, what both research institutes possess, and whether any additional equipment is needed.
These are detailed issues that can’t be resolved in a short conversation. Yan Fei helpfully listed all the equipment in his Sancha River village lab and the ’forthcoming’ purchases.
Once the list was out, Director Zhao and Teacher Yang couldn’t hide their enthusiasm, even suggesting long-term cooperation. This suggestion pertained specifically to the issue of equipment. Boss Yan, with his substantial resources, prepared a list of sophisticated equipment – most of it imported and cutting-edge. The research institutes would like to rent his equipment if needed for their future scientific endeavors.
