Chapter 129: Chapter 6 Professional Exam Accompaniment _1

As the early morning study period ended, Xu Xiaoyan and two of her classmates grabbed their lunch boxes and left the classroom. Out of habit, she glanced toward the spot where Yan Fei would usually wait for her.

Yan Fei should have finished his exams by now, he should be arriving in a day or so.

She mumbled to herself, her glance towards his spot becoming a fleeting one as she turned her head back. However, she quickly twisted back again. After identifying the figure in the distance, her eyes curved into crescent moons, and she turned to run back toward the classroom, leaving her baffled classmates, Xiao Wen and Jingjing, in her wake.

In the blink of an eye, she emerged from the classroom carrying an extra lunch box. Xiao Wen immediately turned to look towards a certain spot in the distance upon seeing the lunch box.

Then, with a face full of envy, Jingjing said: "Some people have all the luck in life! But sadly, some people like me seem to always be out of luck! Why can’t I be the lucky one for once. I was so hungry this morning, I couldn’t resist and sneaked out a few biscuits. Now, I’m not even that hungry!"

Xiao Wen scornfully responded: "How dare you complain when you’re enjoying someone else’s food! Xiao Xingxing, let’s go together, and ignore her!"

Like a loyal follower, Xu Xiaoyan, who didn’t need an invitation, gleefully sped past the two of them towards Yan Fei. This delightedly left Jingjing exasperated, denouncing the two as they ran downstairs for forgetting their friend upon getting food.

It was early in the morning and in case the meat was too greasy for Yan Fei, the girls had packed some side dishes alongside. In addition to their usual ’catfish meat’, they brought several types of pickles, fermented bean paste, sweet and sour garlic cloves, shredded mustard leaves, dried radish topped with Chinese chives; even the fermented bean paste was available in both ordinary and cucumber varieties.

A pot of red fish meat, white shredded mustard leaves, brown fermented bean paste, yellow sweet and sour garlic cloves, green chives, dried radish with alternating strips of green and white, and pickled cucumber showcasing a mix of green, white, and brown...

Just the sight of it was enough to whet anyone’s appetite. The girls all gasped in awe, throwing all caution to the wind as they began to taste each dish.

This spectacle led to the salivating of surrounding students who were miserably eating their buns and stewed cabbage from their lunchboxes. Especially the boys, looked enviously at the three girls, who were beaming with happiness. Even though this scene had played out for almost a year, they wished they could kick Yan Fei out of the school to take his place.

"Not fair at all! You all get delicious food without me!" Just as the girls started eating, they heard someone say. Without looking up, Yan Fei knew it was the voice of Ji Yunyun.

Since the day he had helped Xu Xiaoyan buy clothes, Yan Fei had brought rabbit meat a few times. This had caused Ji Yunyun to let go of her inhibitions, and she would join them whenever she could.

Two other girls who knew Yan Fei accompanied her. Although they were too embarrassed to compete with Xu Xiaoyan for the meat, they didn’t mind the colourful pickles and came along to eat.

"Delicious, oh my, this is also delicious, mmm, this is the best, no wait, this one too..." Once Ji Yunyun let go of her pretenses, she was unmatched. She gave her commentary while eating but couldn’t seem to decide which was the best.

Could she actually pick a favorite?

These pickles were not only pleasing to the eye but were also authentically tasty. They were brought by patients who had been treated by Yan Fei’s medicinal wine.

In rural areas, every household makes their own pickles. Therefore the ones that they dare to gift weren’t merely the best in the surrounding villages, but were certainly among the finest in their own village. To these patients, Yan Fei was their benefactor. Naturally, they would bring their best as a token of appreciation.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that these pickles were a collection of the finest pickles from miles around.

"Oh no, Yanfei, you’ve been hiding all these delicious things from me!" Xu Xiaoyan feigned anger at Yan Fei after eating for a while.

"Weren’t you the one who refused to take some salted vegetables before? You also said that having salted vegetables with meat is so crude..." Before Yan Fei could respond, someone had already answered for him.

"Didn’t I just not know it was so delicious?" Xu Xiaoyan still pretended to be reluctant. "If I knew it was so delicious, I would have asked him to bring it earlier!"

"Oh, please, look at how delighted you are, yet pretending not to be. I spit! I’ve already salivated these pickled cucumbers, none of you eat them anymore, they’re all mine!" Ji Yunyun, with no politeness, pretended to spit, and then directly brought a bowl of salted vegetables to herself.

"You are so shameless, it’s unbeatable..." A group of girls suddenly started to criticize her. Only Miss Xu Xiaoyan happily stayed silent, continuing to eat with her chopsticks non-stop.

However, everyone quickly noticed that she was hogging the food all to herself, so they immediately turned their guns and started criticizing her as well.

"Ah... Hero Yan, do you need another young one at your home besides Xiao Xingxing? Do you think I’m suitable? I’m very easy to take care of, as long as I can eat like this every day." Ji Yunyun suddenly put on a pitiful look while eating, trying hard to flirt with Yan Fei.

It immediately got awkward, a group of girls waited simultaneously, eagerly looking forward to Yan Fei’s answer. Even Xu Xiaoyan did not make a sound, just watching Yan Fei with a ghostly look.

"No!" Yan Fei, who was stuffing food into his mouth, rolled his eyes and answered without thinking. After a pause, he added, "What’s the use of having a younger one?"

"So loyal! Haha, Ji Yunyun, you unclaimed..." The group of girls suddenly burst into laughter. "Hero Yan, just for that sentence, we salute you with a toast!"

A group of girls holding various kinds of food containers posed heroically, using the white soup inside as a substitute for fine wine. All cares for their images were gone!

Only Ji Yunyun held her bowl to her chest in agony, continuing her play-acting: "I’m so heartbroken. Hero Yan, you... you’re so cold and heartless. It’s like you’ve disowned me..."

Another girl who was with Ji Yunyun, a quite gentle girl, laughed for a while, then suddenly seemed to think of something. Her face turned strange and she whispered with suppressed laughter, "He didn’t really disown you, did he? Didn’t he just ask what you could do?"

"What can’t I do? Cooking, laundry, selling stuff, there’s nothing..." Halfway through her sentence, she suddenly realized something and her face turned red. She jumped up as though stung by something. "Zhou Peipei, are you trying to kill yourself? You damned witch, I’ll kill you..."

The few girls who hadn’t thought of anything untoward yet, upon seeing their ruckus, quickly figured it out, and one by one grasped the innuendo. They all turned somewhat red-faced, all staring at that gentle girl.

That girl took her chopsticks and casually picked a cucumber strip. She took a bite and said calmly, "What are you looking at me for? If she wants to be the younger one, isn’t that the only reason one could have?"

All the girls made a submissive gesture together!

Yan Fei had already finished eating and was just about to clean up. He didn’t even hear what these talented girls were discussing. Several of the girls who had finished eating came over to help. They cleaned the pots and pans quickly, Yan Fei picked up his things and left.

He still had tasks to do, planning to go to the cattle market in the county town in the next few days.

He had made some money selling medicinal wine lately and wanted to see if he could find a good calf or suitable fattened cow to buy, maybe one or two. Even if he didn’t buy, it was always good to frequent the cattle market and keep an eye on the market conditions.
