Chapter 130: Chapter 7: On Cattle Market Road_1

"Xiao Fei is back, your exams finished, right? Come in quick! Xiaochao, stop making a fuss, your big brother has brought you some tasty treats. If you keep whining, I’m going to smack you!" Lin Xiumei called to Yan Fei while trying to soothe a crying Yan Chao.

"Where’s Dad, what’s going on?" Yan Fei put his things on the table and hurriedly tried to pacify the emotional Yan Chao. "Look what I’ve brought for you. Hot catfish meat."

Upon hearing this, Yan Chao immediately beamed and ran over, reaching out to grab some.

"Don’t grab with your hands, use chopsticks, got it?" Lin Xiumei held back his hand, handed him a pair of chopsticks, and then said to Yan Fei, "Your dad went to work early. This brat didn’t want to go to kindergarten, so he’s been throwing tantrums since early morning."

"The teachers said it’s okay not to go during vacations, why do I still have to go...." The little guy argued with Lin Xiumei while eating.

Yan Fei was planning to go to the Cattle Market, but of course, he had to stop by home first to let everyone know. After leaving school, he took a quiet spot, put his things in his bag, then came home with some meat and salted vegetables.

Hearing his mom reprimanding the little one, he found out why.

The kindergarten Yan Chao attended set up a summer class to cater to dual-income families. His parents naturally signed him up.

The class was optional, attendance wasn’t compulsory. Hence, Yan Chao was unwilling to go first thing in the morning, and was causing a commotion at home.

"Good timing, I’m free today. I’ll take him out for a bit. Mom, you go to work!"

"Yay, yay, my brother will take me out, I promise to listen to him, Mom, you can go now!" The little guy heartily agreed, while stuffing himself with meat.

"You little troublemaker, behave yourself, or I’ll take care of you when I get home. And eat less, you just had breakfast!" Lin Xiumei glanced at her watch, gave Yan Fei a few hurried reminders then hurriedly left.

"Brother, where shall we play?" As soon as their mom left, Yan Chao dumped his chopsticks and hopped up to ask.

"We’re off to see the cows at the market!" Yan Fei chuckled.

"Great, off to see the cows..." The little guy was just averse to going to school. As long as he was taken out, he’d be more than happy, no matter where they went.

Taking the little troublemaker along, Yan Fei’s pace slowed down considerably. Luckily, he wasn’t in much of a hurry. He let Yan Chao run around exploring. But after a while, the little guy got tired. Yan Fei ended up letting him ride on his neck, this way, he wouldn’t have to worry about losing him.

On the way, he bought a glass toy for Yan Chao. The little guy sat on his neck, carefully blowing into it, his delight evident.

This toy is made with thin pieces of glass, typically dark brown, one end was shaped like a flattened apple, hollow inside, with a glass tube attached to it, resembling a conical flask. When you blew into the tube, it produced an odd sound.

As popular as the toy was; it was highly fragile. No matter how careful you were, it would easily break even with a slight knock. It could even explode if a child blew too hard. Its fragility and high price compared to other toys didn’t help either. But, in an era where toys were scarce, its popularity remained unabated.

But Yan Chao was clearly experienced with it. It’s unknown how many he ’destroyed’, but his technique was immaculate. He carefully blew into it, looking absolutely delighted.

Yan Fei had already found out about the location of the Cattle Market. It was located in the northeast corner of the town, not too far from the Meat Processing Factory. Their parents’ workplace, the fertilizer factory, was in the southeast corner of the town. They were perfectly symmetrical, one south and one north.

"Big brother, big brother, that man’s a thief, he’s stealing something...." Just as they were about to leave town, Yan Chao suddenly started kicking Yan Fei’s shoulder, his little legs kicking incessantly to get Yan Fei’s attention, while his little finger pointed in a certain direction.

The sound of his crisp childish voice was particularly clear on the street. Yan Fei looked in the direction pointed by him and saw a man in his thirties looking back at them fiercely. In front of him was a middle-aged man with glasses, hastily checking his black briefcase.

Anyone wearing glasses and holding a black briefcase, dressed somewhat decently, typically held a certain status. They were also the usual targets of thieves. Almost instantly realizing that his briefcase had been slashed open, he firmly grabbed the thief’s arm: "You’re a thief? Come with me to the police station...."

The thief had already prepared to make a run for it. But the man with the glasses had a tight grip on him, keeping him from escaping despite numerous attempts.

Sensing that people were approaching them, the thief suddenly swung his other hand, and the man with glasses screamed and let go. Immediately, the thief took off running.

A couple of young guys in the crowd that was originally heading there began chasing after him, while a few others rushed to check on the man with glasses. His hand that had been gripping the thief was now smeared with blood flowing from between his fingers.

Turns out the thief managed to slash the man’s hand with a blade he had been hiding, during his struggle to escape. The wound seemed deep, and within moments, blood started to drip down his hand.

"Big brother, big brother, that thief just ran away why aren’t you chasing after him? You should bravely catch the bad guys..." Yan Chao, completely oblivious to what had just occurred, was still ’educating’ Yan Fei in his baby voice!

"You’re sitting on my neck, how am I supposed to run? Is that what your teacher taught you? When you see a bad guy, you should call for a police officer, little brat, what bad guy can you catch," Yan Fei said annoyed.

"Big brother, you’ve said a bad word, you said ’fart’, giggle, I’m going to tell Mom when we get home." Yan Chao hadn’t heard a single word Yan Fei said other than ’fart’.

"Alright, alright, let’s go now. If it wasn’t for you, I’d have reached already!" Yan Fei noticed that he was not getting through to Yan Chao; the little guy was really starting to annoy him!

Just as they started walking, Yan Chao was unhappy again: "Big brother, aren’t you going to see what happened to that uncle? Look, there are so many uncles and aunties over there!"

"What’s there to see, it’s all bloody, now come on...." Yan Fei kept walking as if nothing had happened.

"No, no, I want to go see..." Having a troublesome kid around is truly insufferable. Yan Fei hadn’t taken more than a few steps before Yan Chao started fussing.

"Fine, we’ll just take a quick look, but then you won’t get any treats at lunch." In the end, Yan Fei gave in. To Yan Chao’s agreement, he walked towards the crowd.
